I am considering rerunning Tuesday night's show. Is anybody interested in
hearing it again? If so, when is a good time to run it?

Wow. All these little trips down memory lane, brings up a good question:

Is there anyone on the jam that DIDN'T grow up in the '80s?

With all these shows where the car was just as famous I'm surprised that no one has mentioned. Magnum P.I. So on our list of shows with famous cars(vehicles) we have:

Dukes of Hazzard Magnum Airwolf A-Team Knight Rider Miami Vice CHiPS

so what are we missing? Chris

I just want to say, to all of you Al fans... he's a great player... he's a chameleon. But let's get some shit straight. 1). Marty left because he couldn't get behind the music that deth was making anymore. That's not because they were going to make another RIP... it's because he's in a pop band called Megadeth that tours almost exclusively on OLD material, because they know the new stuff generally sucks. How many times have we heard the "The next album is gonna be heavy" kind of BS from a band or its publicist? There is only 1 RIP. There is only 1 Marty Friedman. You take him from that equation and you've wiped away half of anything interesting on RIP. Lastly, it's just plain SILLY to say "If he can play what he played with Savatage, that RIP stuff will be a breeze." There isn't a difficult Savatage song. It doesn't exist. Pitrelli is a good player... I've been listening to him since the CPR collaboration on Guitar for the Practicing Musician's label... but he doesn't have a SPARK of what Marty had... until Marty Friedman got on the $$$ bandwagon and started playing pop music in a band named after a genocide-like million person fatality, everything he played was COMPLETELY unlike anything else out there... he'd escaped his Uli Jon Roth fixation and managed to create a complete signature sound and make every note drip with gooey emotional goodness. Pitrelli has NEVER impressed me with an ability like Marty's. I would love to see if he can pull of Marty's solos and actually sound like Marty. I'd actually be IMPRESSED though, if he can do something as original. I will listen, but my hopes aren't high. There's no way in HELL Megadeth is gonna be a heavy band again. They're working overtime to figure out how to break that boundary that's keeping them away from an "Unforgivable" sum of money. Marty Friedman may no longer be in the band, but I'm not gonna sit here and let anyone get away with pawning Deth's pathetic wanky musical shift off on him. Not on my watch. It's against my duty as a Shreddi.

    > From: Gerardo Carstensen <gercarst@yahoo.com> > Subject: Guitar Feedback tricks > > 1st.- Does anyone knows some tips/tricks to control > the guitar feedback to use it melodically?

My advice about feedback comes from my experiences with a Crate solid-state amp. If you don't have a Crate solid-state amp, what I say might be completely wrong.

The feedback you get while holding a particular note isn't random. The pitch of the feedback is related to the pitch of the held note. Change the note and you change the feedback. Sometimes you can get two or three different feedback pitches, depending on the distance between the amp speaker and the guitar pickups. Experiment with distance - if your pickups are six inches from the amp, they will produce different shrieks than if your pickups are four feet from the amp. Proper experimentation with distance will require you to put your amp on a chair or low table, something that places the amp speaker at the same level as the guitar, so you can step backward or forward a nd hear what happens.

(A great example of feedback that "creeps" into a note can be found on "Nothing But Love" by Mr. Big. The first note of the solo is pure feedback magic. Paul Gilbert recorded the guitar parts by micing his amp in the studio, which makes the tone much more "alive" than plugging into a soundboard. Anyway, I beat my brains in trying to figure out how Paul made the feedback magically appear out of nowhere, while holding a slow, vibrato'd note. Then one day I decided to practice with the amp volume up really high, I think because I was in an empty house. Suddenly the Spirit Of Feedback came to visit me, and my ears were opened. I'm pretty sure Paul made those notes transform that way because he was leeeaaaaning slowly toward his amp to make the feedback increase.)

If you can hold a note a really long time because the gain is really strong on your amp, or if your vibrato is really consistent, try hitting a note while standing several feet away from your amp. Make sure the volume is cranked, as you will need wailing feedback for this next part. While the feedback is wailing away, take a step closer to your amp. Then another. Then another. Sooner or later the feedback will "jump" to a higher pitch. When you know those distances by heart and can make the feedback change while playing blindfolded, you are that much closer to making feedback your bitch.

Learn how to turn the feedback on and off, like a water faucet, before exploring its melodic possibilities. If you turn your amp up really loud and play the guitar really close to it, the feedback will be a very reliable irritation. Try turning the volume knob on your guitar down halfway and listen to what happens to your feedback. The tone and volume knobs are like the hot water and cold water knobs on a sink. They can help you control feedback.

Another way to activate feedback like a switch is to stand close to your amp, but face away from it. Hit a note, hold it, and slowly turn around to face your amp. If you're in the feedback-zone (for my amp it's about four feet at high amp-volume), as you turn around the feedback will slowly spring to life. Likewise, if you are facing your amp and you create some god-awful feedback, you should be able to turn around, with your back to the amp, and *poof* the feedback will disappear.

    "CONTROL!!" --Master Yoda

Since facing one's amp plays a big part in feedback manipulation, a beginner might ask the question, "How to guitarists make feedback happen on stage without facing their amps?" The answer is the monitors facing the musicians on stage. Practice whatever you can while facing your amp. Should you end up playing live, on stage, before a crowd of thousands, say a short prayer to the Spirit Of Feedback before the show. He will grant you a monitor to make all your feedbackery come true.

    > 2nd.- How can I get that special feedback that sounds > by playing and letting sound a note in the guitar and > the feedback starts to sound (like the one Petrucci > gets in the HOB guitar solo?

If the amp volume is up really high and you're really close to your amp, feedback will strike quickly and unmercifully. If the amp volume is low and you're far away from your amp, feedback will crawl under a rock. There's a special place in between where feedback will be gnawing at your heels, trying to barge into your tone with every note you play. At this rare balance of amp volume, guitar volume, gain, and distance from the amp speaker, you will be able to control the feedback SPEED simply by adjusting your guitar volume knob. When your guitar volume knob is at 8 or 9, feedback will trudge along like a triceratops plowing through a tar pit. It will take a few seconds for feedback to reach its full strength. However, turn the guitar volume to 10 and the feedback becomes a roadrunner, taking over every note you try to hold.

Petrucci was probably in a very loud place, playing with super gain, and made a teeny tiny adjustment to his volume knob at the right time. The great thing about that technique is that you can hold a note with your left hand while fooling with the volume knob with your right. (refer to my Paul Gilbert example for the "leaning" technique)

Personally, I almost never practice with the amp up loud enough to create feedback.

I kinda thought Automan was far more advanced that K.I.T.T. I think if Automan had really wanted to, I mean really really wanted to, he could have taken to the sky and grappled with Airwolf. He sure as heck coulda outdone K.I.T.T.

Then again, Knight Rider didn't have to steal its image from "Tron" to attract an audience the way Automan did. Maybe it was Disney who shut down Automan for ripping off "Tron." Now that would be just dandy. First they buck the system by buying a 100-year extension on the Mickey Mouse copyright. Then then release a "Tron" DVD that doesn't even have all the cool extra stuff that was on the laserdisc! I'll BET those bastards took down Automan! Just like how the MCP sucked Flynn into the computer!!

I always wondered if Automan had a family. Planeman. Boatman. Motorcycleman. Motorman. MOTORMAAAAN!! Speaking of which, the new Racer X album rocks hard.

According to the message boards on the official website over the last few months the Megadeth split was very amicable and it's interesting to actually read the messages posted by the band themselves. Dave and Marty are still great buddies and it would appear that yes, 'Deth are planning a heavier album that Marty did not want to be a part of. It seems that Marty in fact wants to completely "shed his shred", so to speak, and concentrate more on his solo career. He says now that he never considered himself to be a "metal guitarist" and that he's more interested in writing and playing music with a more pop and "world" flavour to it. Apparently Marty has never even listened to metal in his spare time, which surprised me!! He's an awesome player and I can't wait to hear his new, broader style of solo stuff but I guess that people change. Both Megadeth and Marty are entitled to do just that and if people choose to listent/buy their material then good for them. If it's not your cup of tea it's simple... don't buy it!! I personally prefer the older RIP style Megadeth also but bands must change whether that be a good thing or not, that depends on your tastes. The only thing that is certain in life is that change is inevitable, nothing stays the same forever. Every band changes as they get older and I for one would probably get bored shitless if every bands' albums sounded like clones of their most successful release. That's probably one of the reasons why I can't stand AC/DC... It's one of the reasons why I love DT so much!!!Oh well, to each his own!!!

Peter David was a god on that comic.

    >Talk about geeky.

    Them's fightin' words, boy.

Obviously there's still a large draw on comic books, or movies like the X-Men wouldn't have been made. I'm planning to go to the opening to see who will look the most like the comic-book shop owner in the Simpsons.

Most of the cartoons (I'm talking Saturday Morning stuff, now) were, as a whole, crap. I wound up watching some of the 80s Spider-Man cartoons a while back. They were horrible, ick. No sense to them whatsoever.

    >maybe that's why I am >into prog music. I also loved Transformers, gobots, voltron, g.i. joe, >and who knows what else. TV just is not what it used to be.

I disagree. It's just that we grew up on this stuff. Our parents didn't get the stuff then, as we don't get what some kids watch now. Every single one of those shows were tools to basically get kids to buy the toys. The problem came when there were so many toys it was hard to keep track of all the people on the TV shows.

    >Voltron would have kicked the shit out of those copycats.

Didn't they make a 3D version of Voltron recently?

    >Stupid. Give me the cartoon network anyday.

The new stuff on CN isn't as groundbreaking, either. But the 90s Batman cartoon, as well as Batman Beyond, now _THOSE_ are f***in' cool.

In MD, I'm right between DC and Baltimore, so I get both sets of stations (gives me some options, at least). Most of the time I listen to the CD or cassette player in the car, though.

I remember when they said they were going to build their library. Whatever you called for requests, they'd play it. If they didn't have it, they'd go out and get it. Still, I knew that in my gut that wasn't going to pan out.

Ok, since we're all on the topic of weird, obscure TV shows on the 'jam here -

A friend and I were talking about KR the other day, and he mentioned an old show similar to Knight Rider where the hero had a black motorcycle- anybody remember what the heck this show was called?! We've been racking our brains for days!

    Hi there people!

I have a ticket to the Sting concert on Tuesday in Montreal for sale. I also wonder if someone (preferably the same person who wants to buy the ticket) would like to drive me to Montreal from Ottawa. If anyone's interested, please answer me privately ASAP.
