I think the biggest problem would be deciding who opens for whom. Yes has
been pretty much a headlining band, as has been Rush. I can't see either
band giving up headliner status.

You have a video from them? Where'd you get that?
Anyway, I'd highly recommend it. The vocals are very good (IMO) with great
songwriting and good musicianship. It's not "prog" in the DT vein - no
extended solos or anything - but it's still progressive by definition, or at
least my definition.
I actually got into DTM before even knowing of Dream Theater. I got their
album before any DT album and only knew about them opening for DT when I got
Awake.

Oh, man, I just pitched a tent thinking about that. However, I don't think it's likely to happen. The last few Rush tours, they've taken out bands that are good, and not necessarily prog, but young and looking for a break. (cf Tommy Shaw in the 80s, Vinnie Moore, Mr. Big, and Primus.)

Anyway, lI'm finishing up college in December and planning to move out to San Francisco in January, can any jammers shed some light on their experiences there ? Any of you guys live there, and enjoy it ? What's a good area in the city for someone fresh out of college but without a heck of a lot of money (but enough to survive for a bit, I may only be there for 8 months) to look in for an apartment ? How's the cost of living ? Any of you guys looking for a roommate ? :)
I'm just looking from some "inside" info from people who've lived there for a while, and can maybe give me some tips before I go out there. Private email please ! :)

Someone asking about SF made me think to post this. We're leaving SF for Bethesda, MD, tomorrow. The only advice I can give anyone coming here is bring lots of money. It's one of the most beautiful cities you will ever see, and one of the most expensive. Oh, and SF has the best CD stores of any city I've ever been too. Compact Disc Warehouse, Rasputins, Streetlight and others are all worth checking out, whether you're moving here or just visiting (I'm sure that cool CD store info is not something you get from the local visitor info center).
I do believe I am caught up on all trades, except that CD Tree one, which seems to have died before it got started. If I'm not, let me know. Anyone needing to yell at me about anything use the DaveT@pixelplanet.com address, as that's the only one I know is staying around.
On a more personal note, I want to say thanks to all the cool people I've encountered during our stay in CA. This includes LA people (Cheryl, Mosh) and SF people (Neal, Nicole, Rick, Lisa) and anyone else that hung out with us at some point and made our time here more enjoyable. The last two people on that list will really be missed, if for no other reason that they know where all the cool Thai places are.
I'll be away for a month. I'll actually start to update my site again after the move (it is too stressful to write and pack, so I stopped writing). I have a pile of CDs to get to, including the new Kansas and Steve Morse, which I have not even listened to yet. I guess I'll save them for our cross-country drive. Oh, I've also been involved in the shooting of five (I think) different TV shows about roller-coasters, so if you watch this sort of thing you might see my nasty head appear on your TV screen. One of the producers made Kim and I "act" which was a really odd and sort of annoying experience that I hope they don't include in the show. "Perky" we are not...
Here's some quick CD reviews of some other stuff I've gotten recently:
Aghora/Aghora - Sean Malone rules. He was the mastermind of my favorite CD in 1999, Gordian Knot. He's back with a different project, one that includes vocals. The music rules, and the female vocals are not as bad as I was led to believe, although they're a little too forward in the mix. The music and playing is amazing, though, and Malone is at the top of my list of genius musicians, along side Devin Townsend. A must buy.
Pain Of Salvation/Entropia - Everyone says "Concrete Lake" is better. I'm not sure, but this CD is just as good as their other one. This is another band that defies description, but it is certainly heavy and progressive and very interesting to listen to. Do yourself a favor and get both CDs.
Opeth/Still Life - I'm not a huge fan of the "death" vocal style, but this band's music is so compelling that I sort of got used to them. The music here is just amazing. Really interesting contrasts between heavy stuff and acoustic, folky interludes. More clean singing than on previous discs (I think), but the structure of the songs are so good you'll just get used to the growls. Well worth checking out. Oh, and whoever is keeping this from being distributed in the US should be fired.
Mayadome/Near Life Experience - I saw these guys blow the roof off the Powermad dump last year, so I don't know why it took me so long to get this CD. Another excellent prog metal disc. Reminiscent of DT at times, but Mayadome puts their own spin on the stuff, so they don't really sound that much like the 9 million Euro DT clones out there. Another good one.
Evergrey/SDT - Another band that blew the roof off the Powermad pancake hall, this is a serious slab of powerful metal with one of the best opening tracks I've heard on a CD this year. If you like heavy stuff at all, you need to get this.
The Quiet Room/Reconceive - The title is very accurate, as the band has shifted from their Fates Warning-inspired sound that was found on their first CD to this very, very heavy prog metal attack. There are keys, but they're rather buried in the mix, and the emphasis is on the grinding guitars. The vocals are different too, much rougher than before. At first I was disappointed, but after multiple listens I started to get into it. The best way to approach it is not to think about the first CD, and just take it on its own terms.
Platypus/Ice Cycles - OK, a sort of negative review now. I liked the first CD, but this one leaves me cold. The instrumentals are great, but the vocal tunes seem sort of lifeless and flat. Perhaps I need to listen some more, but so far this is not grabbing me at all.
I'm sure that's more than enough from me. So I'll stop. Have an action-packed June, everyone.

yeah, that was mine, too. I'm trying to figure out a way to correct it. I'm gueesing the connection from guitar to cable to wah pedal is creating a resonating circuit (the guts of a radio), which consists of an inductor (guitar pickup), resistor (cable), and a capacitor (I'm guessing the wah). Does anybody know anything about how a wah pedal is built / functions and how it compares to a standard capacitor. Sure, the easy way to alleviate my problematic radio reception is to use a different cable, but that's the easy way. :-) Anybody know of a way to change the capacitance of a wah pedal? Maybe I can turn it into a radio receiver and get some funky squealing effects out of it.

I know you're probably being a bit sarcastic, but I'll flame you anyway :) Considering how huge megadeth, Maiden, Crue, Ratt etc were back in the 80s, going gold is nothing fantastic. Most of the people buying there CDs would be going on thirty at least now. A genre 'comes back' when a new generation starts to get into it and popular bands have obvious references to it. The late 60s/early 70s came back during the 90s when bands like Pearl Jam, Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins came out with obvious influences from Pink Floyd, the Doors etc. Also new generations started buying Jimi Hendrix and Led Zep and stuff. This has not happened with 80s metal. There is virtually nothing in the mainstream that is close to 80s power metal. Thrash and hardcore has stayed alive generally, but definately not melodic or power metal. The only thing that comes close to this style of music is Metallica, who in many ways are a bit of an exception to the general mainstream trends. As for the early 90s Seattle Sound. Currently in Australia (which is pretty much the same as America), the number one album is Matchbox 20 - a new band with a very Seattlish sound. Number two is Perfect Circle - the SIDE PROJECT of a popular 90s band. Number three is none other than Pearl Jam, a veteran of the genre.

I graduated yesterday! Which should have made one happy and all that = stuff. Instead, I woke up today, the day after, ill. Seems like I've = caught a heavy cold. Add fever to that, and you're not in the best of = moods.=20
Anyway, I went to some kind of farewell party last night. An = over-crowded club where everyone were over the top. Literally. I guess = one should have had a good time there too / looking forward to the = future and all, but instead I just felt depressed. There was this lady = who's been on my mind lately, and although I'm only a friend to her, I = can't stop thinking about her (although I know we're too different for = it all too work). So, here I am today. Fighting a cold and a hangover. = Missing her and the fun moments we had back in school. Not knowing what = I'll do about this summer and the rest of my life. I just know we'll = never meet again. You may ask yourselves why I didn't lay it on the line = and talked to her about it? I pretty sure she'd only give me a strange = look. In addition to that she already has a boyfriend. So, what should = have been one of the happiest days in my life has turned out pretty = miserable. Why? Feel free to cheer me up... ;)

Well, apparently Australia isn't anything close to the U.S. because Matchbox 20 is NOWHERE NEAR a new band. They've been around for quite a while, unless you're just referring to their new album.
Unless they've GREATLY changed their sound between Yourself Or Someone Like You and Mad Season, I can't even IMAGINE them sounding like any of those Seattle Sound bands like Nirvana. Matchbox 20 is very much a poppy- sounding alternative band, and while I like their sound, I can't possibly put them in the same category as Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana.
On a different note, I'm leaving this morning for my summer job - and who could ask for a better one, writing music for a childrens' theatre :) - but I don't know what my Internet situation is going to be, so if I don't have access, I'll see y'all in August. :)

I read in entertainment weekly that korn's singer is going to co-write the orchestral score for anne rice's queen of the damned. Aside from writing the orchestral score, he will also help write the tunes that lestat is going to be "singing" in his rockstar character..
Any anne rice fans here? what do you think? Isnt the lestat character supposed to be an 80's type metal singer? With the korn dude on the helm it sounds like he's probably going to be a rapcore kind of modern thing ...
And to korn fans...i never knew this guy had any composing talents (as in having enough to write an orchestral score!)

Some of the infos on that prog list were pretty interesting even for an odd bunch of whiners like jammers, so I allowed myself to copy a lil' bit of more KB in here. :) As I see, it was a mistake, A HUGE one: the jam dissapeared for few days, Testa miss it already, people start asking about the weather in Macedonia and all kinds of weird stuff. I did wrote introduction, saying what I will copy in that post.
For those who care: It gets down to -20 Celsius and +45 in summer, in Macedonia.
