Hey everyone, how's it goin'? I too had the pleasure of attending the
Petrucci/Rudess show in Nyack, NY and it ROCKED!!!!!!!! Anyway, afterward
they were out signing autographs and what not, and looking for something to
generate conversation I asked John if they happened to be Queensryche fans at
all and he said (something to the effect of): "Yeah, we were gonna tour with
them actually - we had it all lined up for August, and then they pulled out
to tour with Iron Maiden." I couldn't f*ckin' believe it. That would've
been THE f*ckin' show!!! But hey, if you gotta tour with Maiden, you gotta
tour with Maiden I suppose. Dream Theater will still be around for a while,
while you never know about Maiden as it is (those damn reunions!!).
Just thought you all might like that tidbit of what might have been...He
sounded disappointed about it too. According to KNAC.com, Queensryche is
going to tour in support of their Greatest Hits album. Called the Electric
Shockwave Tour. I don't see anything on their site about Iron Maiden, or on
Iron maiden's site either. So who knows, maybe it's not for sure yet.
Perhaps Dream Theater's will still line something up with them sometime,
'cause it sure as hell would rock. Imagine Geoff Tate and James Labrie
singing together if they did...would be quite the spectacle.
        Anyway, back to work.....ttyl!

    Rock On
    Rob

I'd say .010-.046 is the most versatile string set - you have just enough
thickness for a fat tone, but they are still easy enough to bend and what
not. I don't know what JP uses, but my guess is .009-.043. I prefer
D'Addario XL's, but JP uses Ernie Balls (I think)...

I don't know about you Dan, but I thought those shirts were pretty lame.
After years of doing half-ass work, I have a discrimating eye for
mediocrity and that was it. The petrucci shirt was pretty good(cool
logo!) but the rudess/petrucci shirt was a bit below par. I did think it
was great that they even had shirts, though. That was a pleasant
surprise even if they slightly blew, and my hunch is that the blowage
occured not because of a lack of skill on anyone's part, but simply a
lack of time and funding - we're talking benefit function, here. I
guess with that in mind, it was damn cool to have any shirt at all.

But guess what, folks, everything else about that show ROCKED ASS. Like
Dan said, they played a littl LTE. Also, Jordan improved and John did a
"Flight of the Bumblebee" thing reworked for extra crunchiness. it was
cool to know that all the music was written in a hurry and the guys had
    little to no rehearsal time.

Between seeing him at a clinic last year and now this, I will say
w/certainty that John is the comedian of the bunch. Classic line of the
night - in response to an audience member hollering "we're not worthy!"
    - John says, "no, no...we're not READY".

The one disappointment - I didn't see portnoy in the crowd. c'mon, man,
it's two towns over! jeez - is the rt. 59 landfill THAT BAD???

ok, I better do some work now.

Yep, Marlene and Rena were both in the band Meanstreak back in the day. I
saw them open up for Dream Theater actually, back in 1993 (1/7/93 at the
Chance in Poughkeepsie, to be exact). At the time, I couldn't figure out why
MP was stading in the wings perfectly air drumming to every song... now it
makes sense. :-) But at the time, I don't think that MP or JP were either
married to Marlene and Rena... I think they were just dating then. I
actually found them to be quite good... good enough to go out and hunt down
their material afterward. Nothing really all that proggy or anything, just
    really cool power metal.

The album for sale on eBay ("Roadkill") was their only officially released
album, AFAIK. I have it, and it's not too bad, albeit a little cheesy at
times. I found a used copy of the "Roadkill" cassette, and I scored a couple
of demos they did after "Roadkill" from a dude who happened to be dating the
lead singer at the time. They did a couple of 4-trackers with some great
stuff on it. There's a tune on the 1989 demo of theirs that seriously
reminds me of "Beyond the Realms Of Death" by Priest. They also played it
when opening for DT, and I thought it kicked ass. They also did a slamming
version of Heart's "Barracuda" in concert, and it later appeared on their
1992 demo. The 1992 demo was GREAT, not to mention it was produced by MP
himself. I still play that demo quite a bit to this day.

AFAIK, the band was just about to secure another record deal on the strength
of their 1992 demo, when they broke up. It's a damn shame too, because they
were getting better and better with each release. Does anyone know if
there's a Meanstreak website or fansite out there? I've searched for a long
time now, and I can't find a single one.

    Hope this helps... Laterz!

Lol Graham, i was thinking just about the same thing. I mean if you play
guitar, go with the strings/gauges/pick size YOU feel comfortable with..
I mean, ok its cool having your guitar hero's equipment (i should know, i
have a jpm100) but to try an emulate down to the pick's thickness..its
    just.. overdoing it.

The Jazz III's are teardrop shaped picks that I've only seen in two (not
into, damn homonyms!) styles. One is a red, smooth pick and one is a
black, rough pick. And I've only seen then in the 1mm variety.
Personally, I prefer Big Stubby 1.5mm's. I know that using these I
could never aspire to be as good as Petrucci, but that's the price
you've gotta pay for comfort I guess.

    As far as strings go, I use .09 - .42 D'Addario's. Not because they're
the best, just because that's what was on sale at the music store. :p

Petrucci plays .09 - .46 strings, which are a hybrid of standard gauge (.10 - .46) and lite gauge (.09 - .42). Hybrids like this are popular amo= ng the shredders because the extra thickness of the low three strings means they don't twang during the heavy rhythm stuff, yet the top three strings are light enough for good bends and vibrato during lead passages.

Personally I use .09 - .42 because I don't get so many problems with twanging, although I'm thinking of switching to the hybrids. The thicker lows also hold there pitch to a better degree when picked.

I used to play standards (.10 - .46) but kept breaking the top three stri= ngs because they wouldn't hold for all the wide string bending I was doing.

    > -compadre- > DTaholics anonymous > "We Care"

    Hope this helps.

Also, some people were talking about Jazz IIIs. These are the only picks I'll use, although I have trouble with reds slipping out of my hand durin= g long picking runs, blacks are better. Some people just can't get on with them though. I've spoken to people who've complained that they find them = too small; but I just find anything else too big. I find with a Jazz III, I c= an get in real close to the strings, and find I have more control over the p= ick attack this way. It also useful for pinch harmonics because you need only twist the thumb in slightly to hit the harmonic.

The difference between Jazz Is, IIs, and IIIs, is that the higher the number, the sharper the point on the pick. Is and IIs are waste of time, they're like picking with a coin (=E1 la Kurt Cobain).

Fucking a. I don't get to see any of the good shows. I would absolutely love to see Anathema, but the chances of them coming stateside are pretty much nil. Same with anything Devin does. This is where I kick myself for not taking a cab into Hollywood to see Amorphis.

Because if it typed "KorgX3 haven't blah blah" then it wouldn't sound right considering it was referring to itself in third person. It doesn't like when people ask it stupid questions. It is constituted of a singular group mentality thus nullifying the use of first person. It is the Korg. You will be assimilated. -- KorgX3 smashes your arm with a hammer, tearing it to ribbons.

Yo, I just got back from my 9 day trip to Orlando. The whole time in my mind I kept thinking "I could have seen DT here dammit!" Oh well. The parks seemed to happy, but the Tower of terror was a kickass ride! It feels like you drop 13 stories, in actuality only about 6 or 7 I think. Anyway scared the poop out of me. When you have sunglasses around your neck, and you see them flying in front of your face you know you are dropping FAST!

Aerosmith has their own roller coaster "Rock n roller coaster" It goes 0-60 in 2.8 sec, with a vertical part up that's about 4 G's if i remeber correctly, and three upsidedowny things. Anyway I had fun, I bought BAR7 and SOD live @ budokan in Panama City.

To the guy with the question about the pics, he still uses the jazz III's I got one @ the New Orleans show. Nice to add to my:

Troy from Doubledrive Rob from Machine Head Bass dude form Soulfly Doug from Kings X Scott from SOD!!!! METAL! Umm, and stics from SROCK of Queensryche and Mike portnoy of course :)

    I think that all, Kurt

Hi guys. I just bought the "Jaco Pastorius" album which I found somewhat great (yes, maybe it's a bit late, but as we say in french, "mieux vaut tard que jamais"). Could someone tell me which other Pastorius albums are essential? Thanx for all.

Hello :) ? Don't you live in the usa where Dream Theater actually play gigs ? Fates Warning and a tonne of other bands play too. Count your lucky stars young lady that you get the calibre of those bands on your fair shores :)

No one tours here and Dio just cancelled his July tour :(

Well besides wanting to know if JP wears jocks or boxers I've had a few restless night pondering these most poinient thoughts: Does he: drink coke or pepsi ? which hand does he wipe his ass with ? use toilet paper of the left hand-and-water-method ? gillette or schick razor blades ? shop at wal-mart or k-mart ?

Anyway I know it's silly, but things are a little quiet around here :) ?

I agree with Gaz (aside from his gross butchering of the word "ton") -- despite the lack of some of the finer metal gigs (of which Western-Continental-Europe, Germany in particular, seems to have loads), we have mass quantities of quality concerts in the US, way more than most of the planet. Quit yer bitchin, Americanskis.

    >No one tours here and Dio just cancelled his July tour :(

At least he gave notice. Lancaster, PA, maybe two months ago: the "little troll" (Ozzy's words, not mine) decided at the last minute that he didn't feel like playing. He went to the Outback Steakhouse instead. WEAK.

Speaking of weak, how about Lou Reed on Jay Leno? That was one of the saddest musical performances I've ever seen/heard. The dude never had that great a voice, but these days he sounds like an old man temporarily disconnected from his iron lung. Throw in the towel, Mr. Reed. You'll thank me later.

Anyone ever read a book called "Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground" (Moynihan/Soderlind)? Good read, a non-sensationalistic take on the black metal explosion, and the ensuing violence, that took place in Norway this past decade. It has all sorts of interviews with the parties involved, plus it gives a nice history lesson on metal in general, and its supposed Satanic connections. Consider it recommended.

He plays a gig here in tomorrow night and I was wondering if it is worth the $65 (thats a lot) to go see him, as Ive never heard him before. Ive heard good and bad things about him, but we get about one good fusion guy down here a year, so... Thanks
