    Hey,
I was wondering if anyone here could tell me about Mike Stern. He plays
a gig here in tomorrow night and I was wondering if it is worth the $65
    (thats a lot)
to go see him, as Ive never heard him before. Ive heard good and bad things
    about
him, but we get about one good fusion guy down here a year, so...
    Thanks
    <<

I saw Mike a few months ago, doing a TV show (2 sets) and the admission was
FREE! I'm not gonna tell you that 65 green ones is small change for a show
    like
this, it's not, it's outrageously expensive, but I'd pay it anytime to see
    Mike again
in a heartbeat. If you like jazz he's gonna blow your mind. Great musicians,
    awesome
sax player, earth shaking bass player (gotta get me Walter Woods amp, anyone
    knows
how much they cost?), Richie Morales on drums (GOD! also played with
    SpyroGyra,
my favorite). Check Mikes' latest CD and see if it's worth spending that
    kind of money
for the show. Live, he plays everything with a bit more edge, a bit more
    rockish.

    I'd definately go,

Matej, still hears that KABOOM KABAAAM Mikes bassplayer produced

I know that most of you are probably sick of this topic by now, but
there's an excellent article -- actually, the transcript of a speech
-- on Salon today, by Courtney Love. (Yes, I was as surprised as I'm
sure you are.) She may not be anyone's favorite musician, but her
take on the recording industry is fascinating and well-written. Now
that a high-profile musician has gotten into the fray, on the side of
artist's rights, and has spoken eloquently on the subject, we may see
things start to change. A very interesting read, especially for the
    musicians among us.

Hey everyone... found this post on the King's X Usenet newsgroup; it's
    confirmed on www.stevemorse.com

"How's this for a night of music? Steve Morse Band opening for the Dixie
Dregs. I am happy. Soooo happy. Sorry, only East Coast dates so far...

Friday Aug. 04 West Palm, FL Alligator Court Hall
Saturday Aug. 05 Orlando, FL House of Blues
Sunday Aug. 06 Atlanta, GA Variety Arts Theater
    Monday Aug. 07 Winston-Salem, NC Ziggy's
Tuesday Aug. 08 Alexandria, VA The Birchmere
    Wednesday Aug. 09 Off
Thursday Aug. 10 Philadelphia, PA Keswick Theater
Friday Aug. 11 New York City, NY Irving Plaza
Saturday Aug. 12 Huntington, L.I., NY IMAC
Sunday Aug. 13 New Haven, CT Toad's Place
Monday Aug. 14 Boston, MA The Roxy"

How exactly will this work? Steve Morse will play, then will the rest of
the band change before Steve comes back out and plays some more? :)

Anyway, I was blown away when I saw the Dregs open for DT in February; I'd
love to see them again. So I'm sure I'll be at the Birchmere show in
    Virginia. See y'all later...

Hmm, it was supposed to be out by now, but perhaps the release date got
pushed back. I got a review copy right before I moved, and listened to it
during our cross-country journey. If you like Morse, than this CD is a
must purchase. Although I don't like it as much as the new Kansas (which
was in the same package), which I think is really, really good.

And I wouldn't always rely on CDNow's release listings, as they are not
always known for shipping anything on a smaller lable on the official
date. And they wonder why they're going out of business...

Actually, I think that this can potentially be quite cool. A lot of players use the same plecs, same strings that they've always used, if left to their own devices. I used to use 10s and those large Dunlop picks. I played in the traditional rock 3-fingered style, holding the neck in that dumb baseball bat way that most players do (instead of the much better thumb-behind neck "classical" way). I held the pick between thumb and two fingers, fist clenched. Never used speed picking. Why? 'Cos I didn't know different, and people are too wont to let people carry on doing "whatever works for them", even though if they tried it a different way, although it takes time to ajust, it's easier in the long run.

Although I play more bass these days, I now use the same strings and plecs as JP, hold the neck and plec properly, use speed-picking, and regularly sit in with a metronome. And I'll tell you what, my guitar play has improved 200% since I started doing that.

Sure, don't use gear just because it's what JP uses; but do be aware of why he uses the stuff that he does, and why you use the stuff that *you* do. If the answer to the latter is force of habit, try making the switch!

yeah, that's why I didn't buy one. But now I'm kind of wishing I had more

of a memento. My pics didn't come out (I'm noticing a pattern forming here.... :-( ) I've got one of the flyers signed by the both of them, and an extra one signed just by Jordan.

I liked the Petrucci shirt, but that seemed just a bit TOO idol-worship-like. Now that I think of it, it's kind of a dumb reason. 8-)b

I almost laughed my ass off when JP dumped all his music on the ground. (I do that ALL the time when I play in front of people) With the pedastal that we put these guys on, it's nice to see them in a laid back, more "human" setting. It helped me related to them better as musicians. Kinda like when I read Steve Morse's comment that he has trouble remembering all the song's he's gotta play. :-)

If they do release this, once you guys hear it, you're gonna kick yourself for missing it. :-)

I'm still pretty new to this list so unfortunately I haven't read many posts on Dream Theater themselves ironically enough! Mostly just stuff on Napster, John Petrucci's gear, keyboards, obscure bands, and that Richardo guy that seems kind of wacky. I was just wondering though: How many of you guys out there hate Images and Words? I mean, it is defintely their worst album and they shouldn't have made it. To be honest, it's pure crap. Pull me Under and Learning to Live sound as though they were just written in a couple of hours with no thought given to them. And Another day sounds exactly like The Ones Who Help Set the Sun. You really have to be goofy in order to like that album. In fact, you have to be downright retarded. Don't get me wrong here, I love Dream Theater, but Images and Words sucks badly. Their best album is by far Falling Into Infinity. You Not Me and Anna Lee are brilliant tunes as is Lines in the Sand. I also like Take Me Over. That is one of my favorites. My second favorite album is When Dream and Day Unite. I just wish they would have kept Charlie Dominci though as their vocalist. The man was brilliant. What is he up to now? It is a shame that he left the band and was replaced by LaBrie. LaBrie is Ok but doesn't have the range of Dominci. It would be the perfect band if Dominci and Derek Sherinian could work together. I mean, if you wouldn't like that band, you'd have to be a cocksucker. Their album would be tons better than Images and Words.

WHAT THE FUCK? Images and Words isn't my FAVORITE DT record, but it certainly doesn't warrant that kind of treatment (I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions, but hey)... :)

I also like FII a great deal, and AL and LitS are fantastic, but YOU NOT ME???? It was better as You OR Me, before Desmond Child raped it.

WHAT THE FUCK? I hope you're not serious - Dominici??? I'll admit it, though, I loved what Derek did for the band - I was sad to see him go. SFAM obviously wouldn't have turned out the way it did without Jordan, though, so I'm sure not complaining... :)

Uh. I think there was a whole load of sarcasm in the message you quoted here. I wouldn't take anything said there seriously at all. At 11:48 AM 6/16/00, you wrote:

Im pretty sure I read recently that JP uses 10-46. 10s IMO, are better for shred because the thicker the strings are, the less movement they'll make when they vibrate, so in a sense, you can get the action closer with less buzzing with 10s than with 9s.

The JP/JR show KICKED ASS!!! I can't even compare it to any other show Ive ever seen because it was so good. I don't think I've been inspired that much musically since I saw Steve Vai. It was also nice to see a DT (related) show sitting down, with no one bumping into me :-).

Jordan used a baby grand most of the night and only used his Kurzweil for piano w/strings type sounds (and to get some sort of weird middle eastern-instrument sound for his improv). Petrucci played his EB/MM through a Mark IV 1x12 combo with a 2x12 extension in the back of the stage. I think someone said he used a Boss Chorus and a Boss Delay for effects. Most of the night, he used a clean or acoustic sound w/chorus, he only used a distorted sound for leads and solos. The music was completely original (save for two familiar songs) with influences ranging from prog to jazz to classical, even celtic and middle eastern/indian sounds were heard. The setlist was something like this:

    1. untitled 2. The Truth 3. Fife and Drum 4. State of Grace 5. Bite of the Misquito ( WILD Petrucci solo song w/Jordan's sequencer playing piano chord changes behind him...sounded like a mix between Flight of the Bumblebee and that Chopin etude he transcribed for GW) 6. Jordan improv solo 7. The Rena Song (song John wrote for his wife) 8. John improv (Im assuming) solo w/Jordan playing chord changes ala the intro to THE on the M2 tour 9. Hang 11

    encore: Hourglass

The guys came out into the lobby afterwards for pics and autographs. Both guys were very cool and you really had to admire the fact that they stayed there until EVERYONE that wanted an autograph/picture got one (there were there so long it seemed like that anyway). I really hope they do this again (or release a CD of it!). Truly a night to remember.

OK, so I crafted that sentence like a complete idiot... :)

I LIKE Jordan - not as much as I liked Derek, but since I love SFAM, I can't hold anything against Jordan, because the album would not have been the same without him...

Yngwie uses .08's, and he scallops his fretboard and he's got that cheesy Fender tremelo. How he stays in tune? I'll never know... :-)

    >A tonne weighs 1000 kg

Actually... :-) The metric "tonne" and the English "ton" measure two different things. Kilograms (and concequently, "tonnes") are a measure of mass, not weight. Newtons are the metric measurement of weight. On earth, 1 kg weighs 9.8 Newtons. I believe the English unit of mass is called a slug. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter present in a body - it is not affected by gravity. Weight is the measurement of the force of gravity on an object and is dependent on 1) its mass, 2) the mass of the body it is attracted to (actually, they're attracted to each other equally), and 3) the distance between the two objects.

mass * gravitational acceleration = weight

    on earth:

    1 slug * 32 ft / sec^2 ~= 32 pounds

    1 kg * 9.8 m / sec^2 ~= 9.8 Newtons

what a coincidence, that's the same weekend I'll be in town (armed w/ a map this time) :-)

    >I say put 10's on your geetar, sweat with them for a while but > when you get used to them, you'll never look back.

I'm tempted... How much do you think I'd have to fiddle around w/ my tremelo and / or truss rod after switching from 9's to 10's?

Hey all, I'm back; thought I'd be gone all summer, but I did find a place to get Internet access. :)

Well, you have to admit that the John Petrucci discussion really is kinda DT-ish :)

/me is wondering if this person is for real, after reading the entire post.

Now, I can accept your comments about how you don't like the album, but do we really have to resort to name-calling just for a difference of opinion? In response to your comments about the style of I&W, I have to say this: You must remember that this was 1992. This kind of music (the heavy rythms, the fast guitars, the power ballads, etc) was what was being played on the radio at the time. Not to say that DT was trying to be radio-friendly, just that they happened to be at a point where their type of music was the big thing. As such, they probably (unintentionally) ended up incorporating a large amount of the previous era of radio (the Damn Yankees/Firehouse stuff with more power and more technicality).

    > Their best album is by far Falling Into Infinity. You Not Me and Anna > Lee are brilliant tunes as is Lines in the Sand. I also like Take Me > Over.

"Take me Over?" Is this a hidden track on FII or something? :)

/me is still wondering if this person is for real...

Define "range." If you mean dynamic, pitch, or emotional range, then I think you need to go double-check your definition. :) Dominici was a very weak singer, IMO (and I'd like to think that my opinion means something, being a singer myself). It could very well have been partially the mixing's fault, but it was very trebly; it had no bottom to the core sound whatsoever.

    > It would be the perfect band if Dominci and Derek Sherinian could work > together. I mean, if you wouldn't like that band, you'd have to be a > cocksucker. Their album would be tons better than Images and Words.

Hey, I like Derek and all, but a cocksucker? Hmm. Uh, nope. Opinions are like assholes... /me decides not to finish the cliche. :)
