    Ditto.

Who says MP3's aren't a good thing? I first heard "Truth" the first track
from "Infinity" by chance from someone's MP3's. I went online and bought the
album, and fell in love. After that, I got the rest of them. And I had
never heard of him before I met Mr. MP3.

Incidentally, the very first time I ever heard of MP3's was a couple years
back when my favorite band DREAM THEATER let "You Not Me" slip into the
public. I've been hooked on MP3's ever since.

It's either in "Passion and the Opera" or "Devil adn the Deep Ocean" (if I botched the song names, it's because I only have the dreaded mp3 samples) that there is some a guy singing in a pseudo death metal voice. I don't have my speakers hooked up at the moment so I can't tell. I've really gotten into Nightwish this year, after fervently protesting them and ranting about how I hate female vocalists last year. They just grew on me a whole bunch.

I think the Springsteen thing was referring to the flame way we had here when someobe said Bruce Springsteen can't sick, though not phrased as nicely. Perhaps I'm only having ytsedreams though ;)

Hi guys, Some friends and I were talking about this the other day. We would like to start a prog review/sample website that both brings in new converts in our age group (high school / college) and caters to veterans of prog. The HTML is a breeze, ive been playing with that long enough to know whats up, but I did have a few questions:

    1. How can I get promo/early releases of albums? I noticed that people have the new Fates Warning and the new Symphony X among others. I would feel like quite a tool if my review site reviewed albums a few weeks after it was released.

    2. Can I just e-mail bands and ask them if I can put *** sample up or will I have to jump through rings upon rings of legal goo?

Other than those I have some really great ideas that I think would help us all.

    Thanks again, Zack

Time for my annual Incubus plug.

If you get a chance to see these guys live, definitely do it. Saw them last night, and they absolutely kicked ass. Unfortunately, they weren't headlining, so I had to endure 2 Skinnee J's (ugh), and then the Incubus set was only 45 minutes or so after that. I left 2 songs into the headliner, 311.....maybe some of you like them on here, but i just couldn't take it - plus it was raining pretty hard by then......

Incubus is Highly recommended, though. They will be all over the place this summer. Adn in the meantime, pick up "Make Yourself" - easily one of the best albums I have picked up in a long long time.....

the way I learned best was by learning to play songs I like. It'd probably be a little too tough starting out on DT tunes (although a lot of it really isn't spectacularly hard) so if there are other bands you like (Sevendust, Korn, ***allica, etc) most of them have tablature books available for twenty bucks. Sit down with the book and the CD and learn the songs. You'll be learning in the style of the music you like, and playing stuff you like, so it's all good. There's also a series of books called "You Can Play (fill in insturment). It's got a really cheezy cartoon on the cover, but the one for Rock guitar is actually pretty decent; it starts out easy enough, but by the end of the book it's teaching some good stuff. I've looked at a lot of beginning books (I work in a music (instrument) store and was in sheet music for six months) and the "You Can Play Rock Guitar" was the best, as far as balancing easy and challenging. later, you may want to check out the Guitar Grimoire or Abersold series, both are fantastic advanced level books; Grimoire is a scale/chord/etc dictionary, and the Abersold series is a jazz improve series for every instrument with rhythm tracks on CD to jam along with. very cools stuff.

Hey there, are there any jammers in the Pittsburgh area who are planning on going to the Yes/Kansas show on July 5th? It's going to be at the Post-Gazette Pavilion (formerly Star Lake Amphitheater), and tickets are anywhere from $16 - $40. If anybody out there is planning on showing up for what promises to be one of the highlight shows of the summer, then let me know. I would love to be in the company of a few fellow jammers amidst all the other prog nuts that are sure to be there.:)

Be prepared... Physicist is the caf-caf-caffeinated version of Ocean Machine, then you hit the track "Planet Rain" and get a nice cool down. It's amazing how disturbingly restless Physicist is. It's not really a short album, but it goes by most enjoyably quickly. :) -- KorgX3 decides he likes it more than Mer de Noms.

Heya Ive taught myself to play, and I like to think I'm pretty good, but I did find the few lessons I had very helpful. You should get lessons every now and again just to keep you on track. With the wonders of the internet though, self teaching is easier than it ever has been, but you will still need to spend a lot of time, on your butt in from the computer (which could be better spent playing guitar). The two best resources I have found are www.harmony-central.com which has a link pages with lots of lessons; and the newsgroups. Start with alt.guitar. This has stacks of posts everyday, but such a wide range that you're bound to find a heap of useful information. Take note of what people say there, because there are some really talented people, as well as people in the same situation as you. There's probably also some books at your local library. Get ones that will explain the different parts of your guitar, and how to do stuff like changing strings etc. Apart from that, I offer one other piece of advice - don't get to attached to tabulature. Use your ears first, and use the tab only to check what you have done, or to get particularly nasty sections. Good luck.

The male singer on Angels Fall First is none other than keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas, if you have the CD it's in the booklet :) Yes they have a new album out called 'Wishmaster', no cookie monster vocals or any other male vocals, apart from a a few spoken words in a couple of the songs. I'm off to Helsinki next month to see Tuska 2000 metal fest, where Nightwish are co-headling with Gamma Ray :)

More on the new Fates Warning: On more thna one song I can detect a huge ChromaKey influence, I duon't know if Kevin had any input at all. 'Disconnected Part 2' to me sounds like SDV and something off 'DAFR'. The album is certainly very different to APSOG and a welcome to see the band trying soething new.

That would be Tuomas, who's only the keyboardist main brain of the band and creator of this great music. But indeed that doesn't qualify him to sing at all. BTW I always thought that there were too much boyscout campfire songs on angels fall first (the Carpenter, yuck).

Just read the metal sludge interview. Holy shit, I never laughed so harde in my life. That was funny as hell. I do have a few issues, though.

While I do kind of agree with most of what Mike said about Queen's Ryche going south with Metalica, I don't agree with his assessment of Rush. I still think Rush puts out vital music, and while Signals through Test for Echo was not the most progressive stuff ever done, I thought they were still great songs. Neil has proven on Different Stages that he can outdrum almost anybody, although his drumming on the last two albums was a bit more subdued. however, Neil's comments on the Rush tribute do warrant some criticism and Mike doled that out quite well. As for Mike's statement on Magna carta bands, I would love to see someof those bands tour myself. I don't think it takes away from their musician status though. And I loved his answer about drerek's firing from DT. Mike, you rock. At 03:07 AM 6/20/00, you wrote:

<< f you were fortunate enough to see Transatlantic yesterday please give us a detailed review. >> aahhhhhhh..... it was great at NEARfest! portnoy brought his family- including his DOG!!! haha! his kids kept coming on satge and standing next to him while he was playing....it was so cool! they sounded pretty good, except for the few technical problems from neil morse's stuff- his headset cracked a few times then died on stage, so he threw it down and got a new mike. oh yeah! they played lots of covers...the beatles, some genesis, and each member of trans played part of a song by their respective band...like "finally free" from DT :) there may have been some more tech difficulties, but i was too friggin excited to notice- it was a highlight of my life. they began with the first half of "all of the above" then (i think this was the part) they switched into "she's so heavy" right from "all of the above." among some others, they played "my new world" and "mystery train" (without MPs little remark at the end, i think because his kid was standing right next to him!:) it was a good weekend...if anyone else was there (and i know there were some jammers) let me know- i was one of the people selling t-shirts and programs. see you lata!
