I agree. That was one of the most candid interviews I've ever read. :)
A very good insight into the mind of Mr. Portnoy (and more revelations
    that he really IS human!).

But how can he REALLY be human if he doesn't like Twinkies?

Got my new signed Chromakey cd in the mail yesterday! It's very similar in style to the first one, but after one spin, I'd say it's not as good as DAfR and definitely nothing as good as Colorblind or On the Page.

    > Words can't say how good it is... at least as >good as APSOG... Kevin really shines...

Ditto. I'm stunned that Matheos and company followed up with something this strong. Metheos himself sounds like a totally different guitarist - much more agressive, but still with that signature 'moodiness' that he practically owns all to himself.

I LOVE the feel of the whole thing. It's like APSOG turned up a notch. All those cool 'modern/industrial' textures are still there, and I think K. Moore has to have a lot to do with that, unless I'm totally mistaken. Fates is a blessing, because it allows everyone to still hear what KevMo can do in a progmetal setting...

Instant classic? I think it will be once everyone has their meathooks into it...

    Mike

    By request...

I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at NEARfest, for the second year in a row. I had absolutely incredible seats, too -- third row of the orchestra section.

There were a lot of great bands this weekend. I won't go into great detail about any of them, but if you're interested, my favorites of the whole festival were echolyn (at the pre-show on Friday night), D.F.A. (holy shit! these guys are amazing!), Anekdoten (the third time I saw them, and they just keep getting better), Thinking Plague (I get it! RIO is cool!), Par Lindh Project (featuring my future wife, Magdalena Hagburg -- she just doesn't know that yet), and of course, TA.

TA is different than a lot of bands, and that's apparent immediately. In one of the coolest stage set-ups I've seen, Mike's drums are at the front edge of the stage, at stage left (our right), facing Neal, who's set up at the front edge of the stage, at stage right, facing Mike. Roine is next to Neal, and Pete is next to Mike.

    A N D N O W F O R T H E S P O I L E R S . . .

The worst thing about this performance was the sound. Neal's headset mike was giving him problems all night, until he threw it to the ground in frustration. One of the roadies had set up a boom mike in front of his Alesis (facing the crowd) when it became clear that the headset wasn't going to survive the night. At some point, Neal was playing the organ (facing Mike) and had to sing, so he contorted himself rather skillfully around to play organ with his left hand, hang onto the mic with his right, and do everything right. Quite impressive. These guys are pros. Roine also couldn't use his acoustic, because it was feeding back like a 16-year-old playing Sweet Child O' Mine at Guitar Center. But other than that, the sound was OK.

One very interesting thing about the stage layout was that we all got a great view of Melody grooving to the music. As Mike explained later at the meet-n-greet, she hangs out behind his set often. However, with the drums facing the side, everyone could see her for the first time. So cute. (And yes, she was wearing ear protection. See the NEARfest webcam page for a great shot of Melody and dad, wearing an interesting hat. :)

OK, the music. All of the Above, Mystery Train into the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour (Mike on vocals, singing "The magical mystery train is going to take you away..."), into Strawberry Fields, back into Mystery Train. (By the way, I think that Mike's voice has improved tremendously over the years. He sounded great on MMT.) Then, (and the order here may be wrong) We All Need Some Light, then the big medley. Part of a FK song (I didn't recognize it, because it's not on Flower Power), into SB's Go The Way You Go (incredible!), into a Marillion song (I don't know any of them, but I was told afterward that it was Hogarth-era), into Finally Free (and Neal's vocals weren't half bad!) We All Need Some Light was in there too, but I forget where in the set it was. Standing O's after damn near every tune.

And then came the encore. Holy fucking shit. Neal walked out and started playing by himself. The smile on his face was magnificent, as he watched various audients figuring out what he was playing. I recognized Genesis' Watcher of the Skies almost instantly (and he got the perfect keyboard sound!). Pete, Mike, and Roine joined in, crescendoing to the part where the vocals start... and then they picked up Firth of Fifth where the vocals start! And did the whole thing from there! They wrapped it up with a minute or two of Hogweed (gee, I don't remember Phil playing quite that hard :). Abso-fucking-lutely amazing.

I have half a mind to go see them Thursday in CT, especially with Crucible (who blew the roof off the joint at last year's NEARfest), and I'm trying to figure out if I have time for Friday's show in the city.

If you're harboring reservations about seeing TA, GO GO GO GO. You won't be disappointed. You've got to figure that most of the technical kinks will have been worked out by the time you see them, and the show should be as smooth as Magdalena Hagburg's ass (er, or so I imagine).

Let me know if you want more detail about the rest of NEARfest. -d NP: echolyn/Cowboy Poems Free (first listen, and loving it)

Kevin recorded those parts in two days. From what I know this worked similarly to APSOG. Matheos wrote it all. Kevin just played it.

there might be a (~) in that URL

as for the new Fates, I've just heard an MP3 of one song (pieces of me?), and I'm guessing Ray ALder had something to do with that track....had me thinking of his Engine project the whole time. Can't wait to hear the rest of it!

Hi. So a month ago or so I started this new job and it's amazing how much of a difference a little thing like that can be. So if you're not happy where you are, go somewhere else. I highly encourage it. I'm not on irc much cause I can't (yet) complain about work, tho there is a lot more to do... Since the profiles, reviews and stuff might be of interest to some of you re: consumer electronics, go to www.etown.com :) So anyway, I was taking a break to read the last jam, and that had me over at the 20 questions with Mike. A really important higher up person walks by and says: "Are you into those guys?" So I say yes and he tells me that friend's son's neighbor someone lives near Jordan and how they've got the chops and are loud and the music chases all the animals far into the woods. He said more stuff I can't remember. A far cry from my old boss who once told me his wife grew up in Kings Park...my response was something to the effect of oh like Dream Theater members... and he had no idea. Ummmm. Got the new Chromakey cd. Listened to it last night for a while and all I can remember is how 911 has been changed to 3. :) I better get back to work before they think I'm obsessed with this Dream Theater stuff. A few final thoughts if you care: Saw Francis Dunnery on Sunday night and it was amazing. amazing. amazing. amazing. Not sure if I'll be at the Transatlantic show in the city. Let me know if anyone's meeting up before, in case my plans change. Tonight's the first night of summer. Make it a great one! :) -Rachel

If only it were that easy! What's worse is there are two of them now! For some reason, my boss must like lazy, underdressed, fat, insecure facade-people. Thankfully, I'm not underdressed. :p -- KorgX3 is sending out his resume today and praying to God for mercy.

I was watching the LIVEtime video with the Silent Man video, and I noticed that JM is playing a guitar... Whats up with that?

Actually, "Gaz" goes off calling ME childish names and gets all bent out of shape because I expressed my opinion be saying "Springsteen sucks and lacks any talent". I raged in return when "Gaz" said, and I quote, "Bruce Springsteen is way better than Dream Theater". Of course I'll call him a fucking asshole by saying that comment.

I'm not going to discuss this idiotic topic with this idiot, but in Gaz's defence I thought I'd point out to everyone that this is a flat out lie; also, in the end most of the "flame war" consisted of Angelho here sending laughable death threats to me. Have a nice day. :)

Because he plays guitar on the song, i cant remember if he also plays bass, but on the live performances of the awake tour they had a guitar set up and he played it on TSM.
