    Actually I just practice along with that part where Petrucci plays really fast. I put the remote on the ground so I can stomp the rewind button and keep shredding away. It's a great workout, especially when I start yelling at the t.v. because the rewound Petrucci never gets tired. He never sweats either.

    My one-hour practice goes something like this:

    10 minutes of shredding 10 minutes of arpeggios 10 minutes of shredding 10 minutes of picking one note very fast 10 minutes of breaking as many strings as possible by abusing the whammy bar 10 minutes of re-stringing guitar

    Sometimes that one-note business requires Zen concentration, where I shut my eyes so hard that I see sparkly things everywhere after about thirty seconds. Steady breathing is essential - in case any of you pass out while attempting my one-hour Shredi workout, you weren't breathing evenly enough. (Circular picking requires circular breathing, just ask Steve Vai.)

    John Petrucci can make his axe erupt into flames at 200bpm. That's some serious pickin'. My metronome used to go up to 200bpm, but it accidentally caught on fire and now only goes to 11.

    This is very good advice. Try transcribing the violin parts from a Shania Twain album. Playing along with non-guitar instruments is a whole new ballgame.

    I think you should all check out the debut album of the young Dutch band called Anomaly. I'm totally blown away by their music. They're completely instrumental and I'm sure that almost everyone who likes DT will like them as well. I read a review at www.progressiveworld.net and ordered a copy at The Laser's Edge (www.lasercd.com). Those four musicians really know how to use their instruments. I would call it prog-rock/metal with some fusion influences (or whatever).     Well, I'm not embarassed to admit that I am a child of the 80's. And I had the chance to sit pretty close to the stage at one of their "in the round" concerts, where I was directly behind the guy for most of the songs and could watch him work.

    1. Actually, he does 95% of his drum fills using his right arm and left foot - he has matching foot pedals on the floor for each of the drum pads up above, so he can use his foot as his "other arm" (and he uses it as the snare almost 100% of the time). So to me, yeah, that IS pretty impressive.

    2. He has always done a lot of heel-toe action (I don't know the technical name for this) with his right foot that sounds like he's using a double-bass drums (or pedal), which he learned to do with the left foot after the accident for the same type of effect on the snare, allowing him to free up his right hand for more cymbals. So again, more fills without samples, plus some decent bass drum stuff once and a while.

    3. He uses samples more for repititous cymbal stuff than anything, especially when there are special effects added to it. Big deal.

    4. He can still play the old stuff with little/no sampling. He did "Let it Go" or "Die Hard the Hunter" and "Stagefright" when I saw them during the Hysteria tour (go ahead and laugh), and I was pretty damned impressed for a guy with one arm.

    Okay, so the guy isn't MP and the music doesn't change times every measure or require 32 drum hits per second, but hey, the guy has ONE FRIGGIN' ARM. I don't like the direction Def Leppard took and my own tastes have matured a little since 1985, but I think the guy still deserves some respect for what he does. DL could've EASILLY gone out and hired a new drummer because he wasn't THAT integral to the band (he barely contributes to writing or backup singing). So I respect what he does and I respect them for keeping him, regarldess of what they sound like now.

    Well, as I was leaving the club I saw security intercept a guy with a MiniDisc recorder! They ended up taking away the disc itself, which really sucks. I'm not sure if it was the same guy that Kez saw, but I bet it was. Fortunately, I'm sure there will be CDs floating around from the archived webcast. I just hope they're of decent quality.

    The show ROCKED. I'm not sure I've ever seen progressive rock really groove as much as this did at times. (Though part of that is simply because this is some of the only progressive rock that's not in a minor key... but they got a great groove going toward the end of "My New World" and "All of the Above"!) They all seemed to have fun playing, but Neal Morse blew us away. He was so animated -- seemed to be "running" all night, even jogging in place at times! I was standing DIRECTLY in front of him, right at the front of the stage, which also was very cool. Overall it was a very fun night... I just wish we all could see them again!

    Your right, but what I was originally seeking was not guidelines for practise, but for maintainance of my current technique, given that I'm going to be shifting from 3 hours plus every day, to an hour if I'm lucky. I've watched Petrucci's video before and I don't particularly like his methods. I'm just need to know really - is technique like riding a bicycle (once you can do it, you can always do it), or will it degenerate once I stop playing so much?

    Yeah, I hate it when bands use electronics in the studio. It totally cheapens the moment for me. This one band, they used these things called microphones, and this stuff called tape. What a cop-out! They should just run a string between two soup cans, and let me listen to the album that way. Wankers.

    Not at all. Remember that David Hasselhoff is God in Europe. Who do you think Michaelangelo was conceiving when he crafted the statue of David, anyway?     I'll second that! I meant to write something about these boys (the compos= er is 19 years old), but I didn't get around to it. I'd give the disc 6 out of = 10, mainly because the album starts out great only to follow a straight line = down to nearly boring. But "Anomaly" is definitely a band to look out for in t= he future.

    Through my own personal experience, I agree with what Chris said. Though doing hours upon hours of technical stuff does make you a faster/more accurate/cleaner etc player, if you never work on utilizing these skills, you're going to either a) sound like a robot, or b) feel totaly lost when its time to improvise or whatever. I never used to make time to work on improvisation skills and actually putting the technical stuff to use in a non-practice setting. As a result, my soloing sounded like shit. It was very disconnected, emotionless, etc.

    I remember Michael Romeo telling me that even though he spent a lot of time learning Yngwie and Gilbert licks and working on technique, he felt what helped him the most was making backing tracks on a 4 track with a drum machine and his guitars and just improvising over these tracks for hours on end, then changing the key, tempo, etc. Then listening back to the recordings and seeing how his playing sounded and improving on that.

    So yeah, practice the technical stuff, but don't forget the actual performing and playing part of it, 'cos thats where it counts. A really good tool that I use to work on this are the Steve Vai naked vamps CD/book sets. Theres one with tracks from PaW and SaR, one with every track from ALS, and one with selected tracks from FG. The CDs are backing tracks of the songs that Vai made himself from the actual studio tracks. The book contains some tabs and performance notes. They're really fun to jam to.

    Another thing when dealing with the technical side is, don't try to cram every aspect of playing into one day. Assign different stuff to different days of the week. For example, on Monday, I'll spend time working on linear lines, but tuesday I'll work on string skipping, and wed. will be chromatics, etc. I tried to fit everything into one day once and it just got too overwhelming. Plus, I feel only giving yourself like, 10 or 15 minutes to work on one thing doesn't seem to do the trick in terms of giving yourself enough time to learn something (at least for me). I get more out of an exercise if I spend maybe a half hour on it than forcing myself to stop halfway because "my 15 min are up." I also tended to rush through an exercise when I only did 15 min per exercise.

    On E.Iglesias, I remember I went to a CD store here in Asuncion Paraguay, asking for some Vai's stuff. The clerk (a friend of mine) knew of my tastes already, so I told him (joking obviously) that I wanted some E. Iglesias. He looked at me really seriously, went to pick one of his CD's and showed me some of the musicians involved....Uh! I couldn't believed it ! If I recall correctly, Matt & Greg Bisonette, and Stu Ham recorded his first CD... go figure that out !

    On the other hand, I finally decided and purchased Vanden Plas, FoG. I'm patiently waiting....=) _____________________________________
