    RAISE THE KNIFE
    Music by Dream Theater
    Lyrics by O.J. Simpson

Have I thanked you for my time?
Don't you know I'll go unpunished again?
I'll ask for 10 million dimes
For a TV lie detector show
No care for how it turns out
    My friends

The powers that be made me a free man
Conspiracy by partners of Mark Fuhrman?!
I hired the best as soon as you knew that
I killed them both with my hands

    Once again I'm golfing
    Appreciating sunshine
    You can ask yourself how
    But it don't matter now
    I may fail the test
The law says I can't be tried
    Again

    Tortured Goldmans bear their soul
Seems they know I won't pay a toll
You know I'm free from punishing
    Even made some money publishing!

Spilled both their guts on the ground one day
    Now covered by double jeopardy

    Raising the knife
To the boyfriend of my wife
    (And her too!)
    Up was their time
    Going in with their lives
    (Just won't do!)
    No need to lie
    I won't try anymore
    (Don't need to)
    No need to fight
    Raise the knife
    Raise the knife
    Ran through

I remember once they were the breathing type
Content to go on living the days of their lives
    What false security!
I cut them both open so people would bury them

No one bought into my contrived sincerity
And how I wore that glove, and now it won't fit
    I laugh incredulously
At Marcia Clark and the people prosecuting me

    Killing was exhausting
    Boy, were they distorted
    When their lives were shorted
    Then a car chase, aborted

I'm widely blamed for those things that I did
'Cause I had the means and the bucks and the motive to kill
    On that day
    And still walk away

Reading through all of the stories about me
I notice the way that they all think I'm guilty
Doubting the jury's decision on that day
'Cause I clearly lopped off their domes

    Raising the knife
    ETC....

does it have to be the same night as Ozzfest? But it will be great to see
Dream Theater in a small club.

Thats Me!! I got Transatlantic and Mastermind. I didn't get the
medely of all of the different bands though. My MD recorded was doing
something screwy and dinn't want to record. I have everything but that
    and it sounds really good!!!
The mic's I was using are awesome. The drums are louder than
everything else (and really clean and crisp!!) but you can still hear
everything clear. The mastermind boot is even better but because of drum
placement :P but I know you guys mainly want TA.
So If you want to setup a trade e-mail me. Thanks!!

I need to know when the shows go on sale, and maybe even have a partner to buy them for me with my local shows (to avoid lines, etc.), and I can do the same for them here...for instance, Dream Theater is August 12th at the Quest club...when are tix on sale ? Queensryche and Maiden is August 26th at the Roy Wilkens...when Are these on sale??? I need info, man !
If nothing else maybe a reliable site, etc ???

    thanks in advance

Got the new FW in the mail today. Metal Blade delivered as promisd, on
the European release dates. If you're in the US and you didn't order from
Metal Blade direct I guess you're gonna have to wait. You definitely have
my condolensces for having to sit through what's gonna be a long painful
wait as you see all the great reviews pour in for this thing. This is
another monster release. It has all the great things you'd expect from
Matheos and company, but some of the best elements are the unexpected
    ones. An incredible disc.

    Regarding the Dream Theater DVD:

Who in thier right mind would want a VHS version? ACK!!! Where can I get my copy of Metropolis2: SFAM on 8-track? Jump into the 21st century. I can't tell you(those w/o DVD) how cool music sounds in DD 5.1. Metallica's Cunning Stunts is one of my favorites. Superb picture, and sound out of 6 speakers instead of 2-3. What's not to like? For those that don't know, 6 channels are: Left Front, Right Front, Center, Sub, Left Rear, Right Rear. A different sound out of every speaker. Instead of the standard stereo 2.1(Left, Right, Center, Sub) So you could hear at the same time the gun shot from SFAM fly from the Right Front to Left rear and hear Victoria scream just out of the left rear speaker. Then you could hear, the car at the end of the story pulling up, out of the right rear, hear Nicholas walk from left rear to left front and knock on the door in the center. What a killer disc this would be.

Plus you can fit a TON of extras on a disc. Just check the new version of T2 coming out. 3 versions of the film on 1 disc! Plus something like 3+ hours of extra stuff. The Cunning Stunts disc has a couple of pictures from EVERY show on the tour! Backstage footage, warm ups, all sorts of cool shit.

Hopefully for those who don't have DVD, I hope I have enticed you a little.

So one last thing: How many people on the jam around or attending the Bogart's show in Cinci?

Nope...some of us can't afford DVD. ALso, more speakers means more things that could and will get broken and then I'd have to pay even more money to get fixed. Then again a Shitallica DVD is the last thing in the world to entice me to get something.

Yeah. They're from Seattle (surprise!) and I inhabited a particularly smarmy domicile a few houses down from their bass player about 4 years ago. It was fairly tough on the neighbors when they'd rehearse on Sundays at the same time as my then-band (grunge vs. fusion..they win the volume award EVERY fuckin' time...the neighbors always called the cops on them, so it was OK). I have a couple friends who are WAY into their stuff, but it was never really my bag. Whereabouts did you hear of this collaboration with the Foo dude(s)? I'd like to pass the information to aforementioned friends.

They are, but he downloaded the song from Napster, so he doesn't have the booklet. Not having heard Transatlantic before, I was definitely blown away at the 9:30 Club! I picked up the special edition double cd on my way out, and it's indeed damn good.

I had a great spot for this concert, namely, right up front, center stage, leaning on Roine Stolt's monitor! In case anybody saw me, I was the guy with slightly longish brown hair wearing a Metropolis 2000 shirt. As for the show, it was awesome. Neal Morse has amazing stage presence for a keyboardist, I've never seen anybody jump up and down that much before in one show. :-) Everybody was dead on, and any sound problems they may have had before were not evident here. There was some brief audience-band talk but for the most part it was music... MP was his usual self, complete with propeller hat and other strange bits of humor. After hearing the cd, I'd say the performance was actually better than the recording, and the 'Magnum Opus' (One song from each band plus parts of two Beatles songs) was awesome. I'm not sure I liked Stolt's take on JP's style that much, but it was cool hearing part of Finally Free again.

As for Mastermind, they were ok, but nothing really special. The guitarist was playing an SG that looked like it'd undergone some major abuse. He had a guitar synth pickup mounted on it with which he got some really odd feedback and octave sounds, and he played some pretty impressing solos. The bassist and drummer were really old (Not like that's very important, but it was noticable enough to mention) and did their job well although it was pretty standard stuff. THe singer seemed to be on pitch, but since I couldn't actually make out any words, I have to say she's pretty bad... The music itself was really odd, somewhat proggish, but pretty twisted... I dunno, they need to refine the stuff a lot.

Anyway, all in all it was an awesome show, and since I'll be missing DT when they come in August, it was very cool to see TA live.

I know there are countless debates on this list as to what consitutes "progressive" music, and I have no delusions of being able to define it for the masses. But, this is a brief primer I wrote for another list (containing some people who are into old Alan Parsons, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc) and I thought it may be appropriate here. Take it with some salt.

I have heard Porcupine Tree, etc. (I actually have been involved in two different netradio stations dedicated largely to this type of music), and out of all of them, I have heard very little to rival, for example, old Jethro Tull (who I saw in '96 on the Roots to Branches tour, my first big concert, and they were absolutely exquisitite).

The only new "progressive" which I find to rival the originals (whom I don't even like all that much, with the exceptions of Genesis and Tull), is ChromaKey. The new "prog" scene has, unfortunately, for the large part devolved into such derivative, depresssing "progmetal" bands such as Shadow Gallery and Reading Zero. Both the "progressive" and "progmetal" bands that I have heard over the last five years have been disconcertingly unoriginal.

There are many who carry on the torch of Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes, etc. but *they all do the same old tricks.* To me, progressive is not simply a genre full of time changes and odd key signatures...it is the frontier of music, which actually "progresses" and stretches the boundaries. The sad truth is, standard western guitar modes have been utilized for 40+ years. There is nothing left to be played in them which is truly progressive. A band can play in A stygian 5/32 and write lyrics about Gimli and the Elves vs. Saruman, but the fact is, it's been done (by Blind Guardian, another terrible imitator on the Magna Carta label). Something truly "progressive" these days needs to delve into one of two areas, imo:

    1. Cutting edge electronica (and not simply the same old techno which has been done for two decades).

    2. Mixtures of western and eastern music, *which yield a viable musical result*. There are countless instances over the past 20 years of artists using "eastern" or "african" influences, which rarely extend beyond laying a traditional Morrocan folk melody over a western rhythm. See for example Paul Simon's use of Ladybird Black Mazambo, which, while definitely entertaining, was really nothing new musically. It was layering, not intergration.

For an example of an honest and laudable attempt at fusing eastern and western traditions, I would suggest the album "In the Buzzbag," by "The Brooklyn Funk Essentials." Modern 'Funk' or 'acid jazz' is the last area most people would look to when thinking of anything "progressive," which means its the area most likely to produce progress (nobody ever expects progress to come from where it does--they expect it to come from tired traditions). Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!!

It's for these reasons that I consider bands such as The Gathering, VAST, Amorphis and Paradise Lost to some extent to be "progressive".

Not that it matters much, given the circumstances, but Knight Rider was first aired in Europe back in the embarrassing days of 1983, and even a country in the North-West of the former Soviet Union got its glimpse. (Finnish TV is to blame here.) So, having seen Knight Rider doesn't really prove or disprove anything, I could say "one man can make the difference, Michael" even before I could speak fluent Russian. :-) (Later years have added "and that man is NOT you!" to the sentence.)

However, there are some other bits that most people have overlooked, which are quite interesting about the person's posts to whom you were referring... ;-)

(Assuming the letter was forwarded to the list without the intention of trolling...)

The "official" definition of progressive rock or metal, according to most publications you might come across on the subjects, is that they're styles, subgenres within subgenres, not having anything to do with "breaking new barriers in music". Progressive metal is a label, just like speed or thrash metal. If you say a speed or thash metal's latest release is their most progressive, it means that it's closer to the progressive metal sound, not that they're changing ("progressing").

Progressive rock is a label created in the '70s to describe a totally new-sounding music style that had come about, the same way "grunge" and "alternative" entered our collective vocabulary in the sleightly-more-modern era. Progressive rock bands today are ones that, by definition, sound at least remotely similar to those early '70s bands. Otherwise, they'd have a different label (the ones Hayden mentioned, for instance: modern funk, acid jazz, and so on).

Brian, while you're entitled to your opinions, calling progrock/progmetal bands "not progressive" because you don't like them (for unoriginality or anything else) is pretty ridiculous as far as the definition above is concerned. They're still progrock/progmetal bands even if everybody dislikes them. ...which, in many cases, isn't too far from the truth!

One more nit to pick -- Blind Guardian (they are imitating...who, exactly?) is on Century Media in the US. The ever-greedy Magna Carta'd love to get their hands on 'em I'm sure, but, as of yet, they haven't been involved with each other.

I just hate nondescript labels. I know it puts me in the minority, and in a no-contest fight against standard genre dication, but as far as I'm concerned, if you call it "progressive," it sure as shit better be progressing...otherwise the label will appear completely and arbitrarily meaningless to a newcomer to the genre.

Sorry about that...I tend to lump them all onto MC, forgot a few of them are on Century (and some, of course, on Metal Blade). My bad. :)

Last Friday I went to see Anomaly live in some theatre here in the Netherlands. I picked up their debut-album (which is fucking brilliant) recently and really looked forward to seeing them play that stuff live. My god, they are so fucking tight and heavy! I saw several DT shows, but was still impressed by Anomaly. I'd tip them as the best new prog-band since a long time.

Just one further note...this isn't quite true. Many radio stations are labeled "progressive" for playing things such as The Jayhawks or Billy Bragg/Wilco. The term still is applied in the sense of "something new to rock," even if something new is really just something recycled. It's not just a genre designator for bands following the blueprint of ELP, Tull, GG, Yes, etc etc etc vis a vis time changes, key changes, et. al.
