I saw Bruce Springsteen, and it was a great concert. However, the
difference between Bruce's style and DT's is huge. Also, maybe DT just
DOESN'T WANT TO CHANGE THEIR LIST FROM SHOW TO SHOW. I"m sure they have
the ability to change it. And also about being more spontaneous, ITS
DREAM THEATER! If I want to hear something spontaneous I go to a jazz
club. Anyway, there are probably subtle changes and improvs from show
to show that most people won't pick up. But I don't know for sure
since I was only able to see them once.

he does that for a lot of his long-e words. you can put
more power behind a long-a than a long-e, so this could be
a conscious choice and not just an accent thing ;)

while they could be referencing Abbot and Costello (source

I have been listening to LTE 2 alot lately. It is hard to choose a
favorite, because there is so much great music on both. If I would have to
pick a favorite it would be 2. Chewbacca is my favorite track, and Acid
Rain is a wild ride too!! I get the feeling that on 2 they are more free
and open to experimentation, hence all the jams(which I love).

My reading of it is as follows: the RC guys said to DT,
"We want a radio-friendly album". DT - more specifically,
probably Mr Portnoy- said "OK, but I can't see it working,
man". When that prediction came true, the RC people - in a
vain hope of avoiding the "I told you so" comments - just
figured "Let 'em do what they want; we're shifting enough
units that we're making profit, so let 'em get the hell on
    with it!"

Given what you want to use it for, it shouldn't make much
difference. As I understand it, provided that you include
a little bar that looks a little like the text of "C. 199X
Dream Theater" or somesuch, and you're not actually making
any profit on it, you're OK. Just don't go and do a Mike
Bahr and start selling them, that's when the legalities
become important. Otherwise, just go for it!

DON'T EVEN GO THERE!!! Bruce Cumstain... er... I mean Springsteen is the MOST non

Dream Theater!!! Of course "he" can change sets every night... they just randomly play
3 to 4 chords anyway, just change the lyrics and you have a different song.

AND, how dare you to use that thing's name in the same sentence with Dream Theater???
It's very insulting for ANY musician!!!

It's not even so much a power issue with a vowel like "ay" as opposed to
"ee." The problem, ESPECIALLY when singing extremely high, is that (even
though it's really easy to sing) the "ee" vowel is very very harsh. If he
were to sing "Lifting Shadows off a DREEEEEEEEEEEEEAM" (the loud section,
not the first time he sings it), everybody would be covering their ears
because it would be SO much louder (at least apparently) and harsher.

Wait a minute. Who was comparing Springsteen to DT? All he said was that
he changes his setlist around - he wasn't saying anything about whether he
was BETTER than DT or not.

I love how just because someone writes pop music or simpler rock than
Dream Theater that they all of a sudden become a "prick". God, the

Definately! And also in the same way, at least to my untrained voice, its
much easier to hit the note that way than to sing the ee as if you were
speaking the word. I dont know if to a certain degree its a crutch, maybe

his knees" he prounounces "nays" ... i cant remmeber other examples, but i
know there are more, since i find myself doing that for other parts since my
range is much more limited than james' is...

Well, for me and Alan it was a fucking LONG trip (and a very hard one to
survive too) to see DT. We traveled nearly 12 hours straight by bus, from
Monterrey, M)Béxico to Dallas , TX. Arrived at a VERY CHEAP motel (that wasnīt
very cheap at all), TRIED to communicate with the motel manager who
happenned to be indian and could barely speak english (imagine two mexican
guys trying to speak english with an indian guy, he reminded us of Apu, the
quick e mart clerk from the simpsons).
It was HELL. We arrived at 9am. Got ripped off by taking a cab from the
bus central to the venue, and then procceeded to crash at Flora)Bīs Motel
(hey, it was almost next to the venue!). Then, it started raining VERY hard
and suddenly got a little cold. We almost ate an entire pizza by ourselves,
while Palpatine and Co. were waiting for theirs. Then, we started making the
line at 1pm. Entered at 8:00pm. Sacrificed the front row for some
merchandise. Struggled to find a good place behind someone not so
tall.......then the opening band came onstage: The starpeople. I tought they
were ok for the first couple of songs, but then i just got tired and wanted
    DT to come out already.
Then, before DT came out, their roadies started to arrange the stage,
and one of them (the one who was testing JP)Bīs guitars) was constantly
arguing over something with the other roadies. Then DT finally came out at
10:10pm. The show rocked, but i couldn)Bīt hear Jordan very well (i was in
front of JP and his MESA wall). James seemed frustated at times, but he sang
pretty good! Instead of lowering some vocal parts, he sang them higher!
Like, in finally free, the line :"Their love renewed...." To me, he was
great!. MP was very pissed off about something. Just when they finished BTL,
he grabbed a cymbal and threw it in the back, and didn)Bīt come back for the
most part of THE. James neither. They left Jordan and JP playing the intro
over and over again and this was deviating into being a JP solo spot.
Finally, somebody put a drum sequence to cover for MP, and got the song
done. The cymbal was never put in its place again for the rest of the show.
At one point, the screens were showing the Dr. Evil face, and MP made a
joke about it (i)Bīm sure NOBODY heard it, because there was NO response
whatsoever to that joke, which caused MP to look at JP as he scratched his
head like "....what)Bīs wrong with this people?") and started playing a song
which is still a mystery to me. MP was even more pissed i think.
JP and JR made a major fuck up during th begginning of finally free, but
the song went great after that. Then, they played Peruvian skies (!?), and
some medleys.......in the end of one of these, JP started to go nuts on his
guitar (JP was the only one who seemed to be having fun throughout the show,
despite all the shit that happenned) and MP started to play eruption on JP)Bīs
guitar with his hands coming out of JP)Bīs back (iīm sure i didnīt tell this
one right! somebody get it straight!).
MP gave the finger to the club owners, for not letting DT play on the
big stage. (Hey!, Weird Al played there yesterday!), and said they would
    come back in the summer.
I hope the other Dallas (or texas, or mexican) jammers complment my
review. A big hi to Nicole, Palpatine and Co. and all the other guys we were
    with on the line.

    Mauricio

Last night I happened to write Jordan an email because when I get to New
York, I'd like to be able to find a way to take lessons with him for
composition and keyboard technique. I wasn't sure if I'd get a response,
or when. But this afternoon when I checked my email, there it was: A
response from Jordan, saying that when I got into the NY area that he'd
love to work something out in terms of lessons, and that he'd be looking
forward to hearing from me in the future.

How cool is it that your musical influences can take the time out of their
lives to answer private email in the interest of improving the musical
    lives of their fans?

I'm trying to record a cover of The Silent Man. The TAB that's on the
website does a really good job of explaining everything, but there's a
problem: In the chorus, it has TAB parts for A guitar, but not the rhythm
stuff that's going on in the background. Does anybody have TAB parts to
that rhythm part? Or would somebody be willing to scan the TAB book for
Awake and send it to me? Private emails, please, and thanks in advance
for anybody who is able to help me out.

    Hey,
I didn't give a review of the show, but it was awesome. Nothing anyone else
hasn't written about. The band was great. The show was superior to the other
two I have seen. MP was outstanding as usual.
I went to meet Mike & Rob Morgenstein at Sam Ash before the show. Mike was
cool & I didn't know who Rob was until the show. He is a great drummer but he
really needs to keep his mouth shut every time he does a fill on the set. He
was driving me nuts. I thought he was going to catch a bug in it or
something. It was really annoying. I loved to watch his playing but that
mouth was open all the time. Anyway, Mike did say see you later this year so
I hope they will make another trip.
    See ya,
    Todd

Hey all - I've recently started figuring out the piano/keyboard part of State
of Grace and I have a few questions to throw out there:
        - one- the hardest part about picking this one out is not the diffuculty
at all, but in hearing the piano part clearly because the guitar is much
louder and clearer. I don't have high tech equipment at all - just a stereo,
a discman, and a computer. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I
could make this easier besides just turning the volume all the way up and
    trying to ignore the guitar?
-two- have any of you already done the keyboard part for this song or
    know someone who has?
Please let me know if you can help with either of these, either
by email of on the jam - whichever works for you - Thanks!!!

Why would you want to try out Autumn Moon? It's not a DT song. It was
just put on a boot by Mike Bahr because he thought it was written by
KevMo. It's actually written by George Winston and is in reality called
"Moon." It's on his Autumn album, hence the title "Autumn Moon." :)
If you already knew this and still want it, you can find it on that CD.

    Well, don't I feel dumb =^)

    Greetings All
I am sill new to the list, so I will try to pose this question
    appropriately.
I am a musician of sorts, but unlike most on this list (assumption ) I
    have always played "by ear"
My question would be ... How important is theory? I would like to learn
more about it,but as it is I don't have time for lessons. Any
suggestions for reading or sites about music theory would be
    appreciated greatly.
Also does anyone else like Mullmuzzler?

                                                     Thanx.

There was mention about theory not too long ago on the jam. I think the
resounding answer about theory was: it is beneficial when songwriting so
that you know if things are going to go smoothly and as a guide to
harmonization and all that stuff, BUT it in no way makes you more creative
or helps you come up with music. IMO it is a very nice thing to know about,
but I ignore it sometimes when I am just noodling around on my guitar or
keyboard. If I come up with something I like I look at and analyze it to
see what I was actually doing. This way I could possibly come up with other
parts, say guitar II, or keyboard chords. I searched quickly and found the
following link http://www.musictheory.halifax.ns.ca/ hopefully you will find
this somewhat informative. I haven't looked at it at all personally.

    Kenn.
