That was yours now this is my personal opinion :
I have to agree that Derek is an amazing player but I truly find Rudess a
master at his art, and for me the best I've ever heard, though both don't
play at all in the same way so difficult to compare.
Here's my little story :
I saw DT in November in Lyon here in France and a lot went saying that the
concerts were a warm up for the REAL SFAM concert so that JR could get into
the music.
But, he blew us all away, he fell into a mad tornado of ideas & notes that
lasted a long time and I happened to be at that time at a very good view
point.
I was kinda in a daze lookin at this ;-P
Just 1 last point : All of the 3 : Kevin, Derek & Jordan are AWESOME but
it's funny how most of us miss Kevin a lot more than Derek.
See ye all for now ...

I just wanted to add something.. don't you guys love that DT is not too
popular? I love telling people about dream theater and have them listen to it
for the first time after i tell them... It is an awesome feeling when they
say " i can't believe i have never heard of these guys they are AWESOME!!"..
so IMHO i hope dream theater increases there popularity but not too much.. I
still want to see them in medium venues so we all can enjoy seeing them
play!! I personally would not want to see DT from the back of a Stadium or
anything like that where i would not be able to see their awesome playing
abilities.. Oh well, i'll shut up now.. CYA

No, you never gain anything if you force your music
on people. You have to be clever and play your music

Yeah, I agree. "City of Lost Children" was a pretty cool (WEIRD!) flick,
definitely worth checking out. Some of the visuals are really amazing (and
NO, I don't mean the special effects..... I mean the look/feel of the film).

All the FII bashing lately made me think of something:
FII was FII because DT were told to write more 'radio friendly' tunes. DT
really had no experience with writing 'radio friendly' tunes, as FII
recieved negligable radio airplay. Miles Davis would give his musicians
weird, vague instructions, such as "Play like you don't know how to play
guitar", or "Just play the butter notes", just to see how they would react.
To a slightly different degree, that's what FII is to me. DT were given
vague instructions, and they reacted to them, showing a side of themselves
they probably didn't know they had, and that probably wouldn't have been
shown otherwise.

I see where you're coming from Korg, and I agree in a sense..... but at the
same time that's one of my favorite parts off the disc. I always find
myself rewinding that and listening 2-3 times. :)
So maybe sometimes a part can be "overplaying", but still kick ass?

I don't know about the rest of the country, but at that time I was living in
the Houston area, and they played the shit out of PMU. If memory serves,
the two songs that seemed to dominate for a little while on Z-Rock were PMU,
and that first Stoned Temple Pilots hit (at least, that's how I remember
it!)

in the vein of old-school 70's prog. Really good stuff.

what I said, Am suggesting Kansas Box set that came out last year, or Captain Beyonds
first album if you can find it (sound quality not so good, not remastered) or Newer prog band
called Porcupine Tree, Stupid Dreams is very good imo. Can send list by private E Mail.
Later, Jack.

I have no explanation for that... My kids were raised with my dog
for the better part of their lives. (The dog is older than two of my kids)
I have a good friend that has a 9 year old pit, 10 year old daughter, and
a 4 year old son. He's had no problem with his dog. I dunno...
In defense of the breed I can only ask you to contrast the rare (but highly
publicized) Pit Bull bites to the volatile behavior of MANY smaller breeds.
Look at the track record of the Cocker Spaniel, Pomeranian, and even the
miniature Poodle. The damage the smaller dogs inflict is much less, but the
intent is certainly there. Imagine a dog with the capability of the Pit Bull and
the attitude of some of those annoying ankle biters... Scary thought, huh?
Us humans have elected to domesticate and make animals part of our
lives. With that comes the chances we take... Not all people are stable
all the time... And we continue to call ourselves civilized. Personally, I think
certain people need to be put to sleep. Many dogs have been put down for
one error in judgment... Yet the asshole that cut off an old woman's finger
so he could pawn her wedding ring gets rehabilitated... And this was his
fourth felony. Fuck him. Let's introduce him to our friend, euthanasia.
I'm sure your aunt did the right thing by putting the dog down. If my dogs
attacked someone without provocation I'd shoot them myself. If a man broke
into my house with the intent to do harm to my family, he'd be buried right
next to the dogs. Chances are nobody would miss a piece of shit like that.

Quite a bit like Fragile-era Yes, at least this cd is. While the vocals don't have Jon's range, they do fall into this warm/smooth category that's been asked about recently. A lot of high fantasy in the subject matter. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only GH cd that isn't a concept album, and that's because it's live.
As for a real test of what I think, I'd get another cd of theirs if I could find someone selling them! ;) My local distributor hasn't been able to order them for months.

I believe it's free. This is certain to change. Eventually this programmer is going to get on the kick of every other internet service provider and start allowing ads in his software.
>Will me signing up mean that anyone else with >Napster can see my entire hard drive when they search for MP3's?
This was a bug, which may have been fixed by now, but it did allow people to range through others' computers.

you connect to a server which allows you to browse the mp directory of anyone else connected to that server. Likewise, they do the same to you.
>What kind of legal ramifications are there for publicly >uploading/downloading MP3's?
still as illegal as ever. Some universities are blocking access to the site because it is a bandwidth hog and a few selfish idiots were shutting down their systems looking for mp3s.

ok - so I know this was a thread a LONG time ago, but at the Chicago show I met JM and JR's tech, Maddi, and he emailed me last week and we chatted. I asked him the same question becasue I wasn't sure if that thread was ever resolved - he said that JR has "the entire show of sounds programmed into his keyboard in order. He needs only to go from sound to sound. Oh yeah, and to answer your question on the improv stuff. He can switch to a bank of standard sounds to imporv, then go back to the set list." Questions about this went all over the place so I'm not sure if this helps anyone. I've concluded that JR can pretty much do whatever he wants to with the keyboard. While doing whole songs at random might be difficult, it would probably just require some changes here and there and he could do at least a close version of the original song. He's way too good to allow his equipment to limit him.

I think the admin for this list looks at things like this as being spam. And next time, include the URL with your message. If any of you want to vote, follow the URL in my signature. I'm merely completing this guy's foul up.

well, how about SHADOW GALLERY for a prog group minus the screechy vox. personally i dont think they're too abrasive to my ears that is. and their vocal harmonies are nothing short of amazing. songs like "darktown" and "queen of the city" are among the most soothing in prog. they surprised mostly everybody when i played them some samples. genius at work they are. prog is a better place thanks to groups like shadow gallery.

Wow. I don't see people hype their first album very much. It didn't do much for me. It was almost cheesy.
Impressive. But I recommend "Tyranny" far more. :) -- KorgX3 wonders why his stomach is all pissed. Damn KFC!
