I don't understand this message. You seemed to go
thru denial of DT's lack of popularity then, by the
end of the message, reconciled with it.

But let's face it, the closest DT came to "selling
out" for more radio play was with songs like "Anna
Lee" (sort of) and while it's not bad at all IMHO (the
song I mean), DT aren't capable of writing a song that
would get tons and tons of radio play. If I'm not
mistaken, PMU didn't even get that much airplay back
in the day. IMHO, DT are much better at writing the
kind of music that they do. They don't get played on
the radio and that's fine with me. I like DT being
the at the level of popularity they're at right now.
Either you now about them or you don't. And let's
face it, if DT were as popular as the Backstreet Boys,
there's no fucking way Mike would be on this mailing
list. As it is, he responds every now and then and I
think that's cool. Let's leave things as they are.

    With all due respect...

One of my favorite DT moments is JP's solo in take away my pain. I feel it
captures the wild range of emotions that go on when youre in that situation. I
dont know if im right, but see it this way, listen to it and think about this:
the first part of the solo (before the fast part) fits with the feeling of pain
and despair you feel when you know someone close is going to die, this leads up
to the solo speeding up and the fast flurry of notes, which would represent a
sudden burst of desperate anger and lashing out that
sometimes occur, then the solo winds down and concludes with an uplifting feel
that could represent the feeling of acceptance and of moving forward after one
copes with death. After thinking about it this way, i cant help but get choked up
everytime i listen to the solo. I know this interpretation(sp?) is purely
personal, but i thought id share because some of you might find it interesting.

    >> NP: Glass Hammer - Live and Revised (lim. ed.)
    >What are they like? I've heard good things.

Funny you should mention that. :) Glass Hammer has strong ties to the prog
bands of the 70s and early 80s -- ELP, Yes, Genesis, early Rush, and so on.
Intricate musicianship with thought provoking lyrics. Some religious
overtones in their songs, but not often.

GH has a number of discs out including "Journey of the Dunadan", a concept
album based on Tolkien's work, "Perelandra", alluding to C.S. Lewis' "fairy
tales for adults" series, and more recently "On To Evermore", another
concept disc continuing the Perelandra story. "Live and Revived", a
limited-edition release of only 1000 discs, features live stuff, outtakes,
    and unreleased material.

Glass Hammer's new disc "Chronometree", a true salute to the Moog and
Mellotron-heavy music of prog's heyday, is on its way and should be out in
a couple more days. Feel free to check out the website at
http://www.glasshammer.com/ for information about the story, interviews
with the band, MP3 sound samples from previous discs, ordering info, and
    lots more.

    cheers,

    Hey gang -

With all this Napster talk of late, an internet correspondent of mine keeps
trying to get me to sign up with them. He says it's awesome and that I'll
love it, but he has yet to clearly explain exactly what it is. I went to
their website, but they don't really have any kind of document that I know of
saying exactly what it is and exactly how it works. The "What Is Napster"
link just says crap like "hey, just think, all the MP3's you could ever want
at your fingertips, blah blah blah, download here!" No details about what's
involved. Can any of you out there provide me with some basic info? What
exactly am I downloading? Is it just the MP3 browsing software? I'm also
always leery about registering with websites... especially in this case where
I may be obtaining illegal MP3's. Also, is it free to download as many as I
want, or do they charge you? Will me signing up mean that anyone else with
Napster can see my entire hard drive when they search for MP3's? (Damn, I'd
hafta hide all my porn, then! ;-) ) Is it the type of thing where you
upload MP3s to a Napster server, then when you search for them, you're
actually only searching the server? What kind of legal ramifications are
there for publicly uploading/downloading MP3's? Sorry for all the questions,
but you get the idea. Private e-mail would be fine, unless you think the
answers are Jam-worthy. Thanks in advance!!

    Laterz... Matt T.

I don't don't know if this is entirely true. Although I do agree that that
FII is a Dream Theater album (and a generally good album), I do think that
Derek had a strong influence on DT, mostly in the straight-ahead rock themes
in FII. Derek is also very "pop" culture, which could possibly explain the
attempt to write radio friendly tunes...

I dont know man, portnoy himself has said it was (if i remember well) a time of
transition, and between the label's pressure and what not they themselves did
this. Its been established that Derek's bigger contribuitions to the band were
in New Millenium, LITS and Hells Kitchen, the former and latter being the
closest to what , by most people's standards on this list, is the DT sound.
Hell, id blame the poppier tunes on FII on Mike and JP first! To think that the
new bandmember had such an impact on their writing is ridiculous. We all know
how portnoy describes himself as a HUGE control freak when it comes to
DT's music, do you think that if he himself wasnt happy (at the time) with the
direction the album was taking, he wasnt going to move things his way?! I mean
could you really imagine Derek, the "new" guy taking over the writing and
recording sessions? I dont think so.. --

My aunt had a pit bull as well... a lovely dog, never hurt anyone --
she never taught him to hurt or anything stupid like that, so he was
perfectly safe, until he walked out on the deck of the house, and bit
my sister (eight at the time) on the jaw, clamping down. He shook her
for about ten seconds, then let go, trotted back into the house, and
laid down. My sister required 80 stitches (the best work I've ever
seen -- barely any scars, even though her jaw as open to the bone when
    he started).

He was a good dog for 99.9999999% of his life... unfortunately,
0.0000001% of his life involved ripping my sister's jaw apart. it was
also the last 0.0000001% of his life (give or take a 30 minute ride to
    the vet).

That only served to solidify in my mind the russian roulette nature of
pit bulls, or any dog big enough to bite with impunity. That's why I
like Daschunds; boots are protection enough.

Looking at the cover, I would guess it was Death/Black Metal, but
it is really good progmetal, kinda SymphX/Stratovari-ish. The singer
and production aren't the best, but all around a good disc.

Funny you say that the singer isn't the best, because that happens to be the

different, to have friends come over and not recognize any of the bands
I have albums from. Some time last year Eckie told us the charming
story of seeing someone at ASU with a DT shirt on.. I think he went and
attacked the guy outta pure joy :) I'm still waiting for that day, but
for now I'll be happy with the compliments on my NIN and Tool shirts.
It's nice to hear a prog or metal band I like on the radio every once in
a while, but I'm glad they aren't played to death like some of the new
Metallica, the stuff with the SF Symphony. I am sick to *death* of some
    of those songs.

I think the world needs to know about Napster. :)

Hell, I don't mind it at all. You don't have to give out any personal information other than your *cough* dad's name and *cough* hotmail address. :)

As far as using it, you just go to search, type in the band name you're looking for and it will submit for your approval what songs are being distributed through the current server. Just make sure you're downloading from a high bandwidth guy and presto. :) Instant MP3's. I've only used it for rarities thus far, but it would be a handy tool to use for people looking to listen to other bands they've never heard before.

All it is is a small program you install that works basically like you described: A search engine for MP3's. Just one word of warning: don't list your MP3 directory in the spot where it asks you to. I did that and it uploaded a list of 2000 of my MP3's. Withing seconds I was the most popular person on the server. Having only a 56k modem, I was beleagured and had to kill everyone. :P If I have songs for people to check out, I put them in a separate directory on my hard drive. Otherwise the leeches will suck your bandwidth dry.

File transfers occur through the napster servers, but, just in case, I would think you'd be smart to use some sort of firewall/nukenabber type of software. Not that I do, I'm an idiot. :) -- KorgX3 doesn't know much else about Napster.

Carlos, I never really thought about it at that little details, but that solo has *always* been a huge emotional ride for me... As has the whole song actually. I think I relate to JP's feelings, as my mother-in-law (who was like a real mother to me at times) passed away, same, because of cancer...

I will think of your words the next time I listen to that song, even now that I'm thinking about it, it makes total sense (okay, not really sense, but you know what I mean..)

Luckily, they'll come to Slovenia this summer, according to the official homepage. All I have to say is... ABOUT FUCKING TIME :)) I travelled all around the europe to see them on various tours and it's gonna be a real treat having them in my backyard :)

Looks like John P. is keeping a promise he made to a little, ignorant, but very enthusiastic girl who made him promise that they'll come :) And I'll get to give him the copy of his clinic, which is long overdue. I'm a lazy ass :)

    DT in ljubljana...... FUCK YEAH!!!!!

They have never been here before, so I don't think they'll be coming (although I hope they will). I think that fellow, CyberDuke, won't be seeing them neither, he lives in Macedonia.

    Weeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllll....

I mean, I do know what you mean. He has even more of a habit of going over the top than JP - if (as Alice Cooper once opined) Derek is the Caligula of the Keyboards, then Jordan is definitely the Steve Vai of keys. Except he's a far better composer than Vai, but y'all know what I mean.

That said, I really like his solos. I tend to be more interested in the keys than the guitar, because to be honest, JP doesn't do it for me anymore. I know exactly what to expect - the legato runs and the flurries of speed picking, and at least one bit of sweeping. JR and KevMo (yes, and Derek) are more interesting soloists to my ear right now, even if JR's solos on SFaM aren't a patch on the ones he played on LTE 1 & 2.

For the on looking for prog bands with no screeching, I would suggest you try Emerson , Lake and Palmer , and Yes. John Anderson's vocals are high, but don't screech . Also try to find stuff that the so called "classic" radio stations don't play. For ELP get Brain Salad Surgury and for Yes try close to the Edge or Fragile.

Could we please stop the Derek bashing? Newsflash: HE'S GONE!!!!!!! Trade in FII and get something else. He's not my favorite either. I.M.H.O. he just wasn't the best fit for DT, and I'm MUCH happier with Jordan myself. But he did great stuff on FII, Planet X, and Platypus. Don't like him? Avoid the afore mentioned albums. God, what was this place like when Derek was actually IN the band??? Favorite moment? Several from each album, but on SFaM I'd say the "Ragtime on Crack" bit (as it was so appropriately described), the "Arabesque" parts in Home, and I've decided to have "The Spirit Carries On" played at my funeral. Just in case I die. I plan on living forever, but just in case. Offtopic here: Anyone know what Trevor Rabin is doing? Does he have a new "Progject" in the works? To tie in to the Matrix thread, was it his name I saw in the credits for the score? Or was that another flick? Good Prog MP3 sites? Anyone? Help.
