Well they don't get much warmer in my opinion that Dave Gilmour with Pink Floyd.
You could also try the other prog bands from that era (maybe avoid Rush though).
Nowadays theres not a whole lot of good warm vocals in prog metal. Spock's Beards
been given a mention. My favourite prog metal band with female vocals is Nightwish.

This can be annoying. Most virtuoso players have to warm up for at least 45 mins
before reaching their normal level. I remember tho an interview with someone who
played with John McLaughlin and he said the only warm up excercise he ever saw John
doing was carrying around a bottle of hot water before the show.
But for more normal people I find a quick warm up is to do this -
Finger the chord shape that goes (from high to low) 15, 13, 17, 19, x, x.
Keep moving it down a fret and holding it for longer periods of time. Depending on how
stretchy you are you could probably get it down to about 6th or 7th fret before it really
starts to hurt, at which point, move it back up again (don't just go into something different
with your fingers all stretched out).
This is another John McLaughlin trick for warming up the right hand (the guys a genius with
this stuff)- tap your foot slowly (or use a metronome) and play 1 note to the beat for a while.
Then 2 notes to the beat. Then 3, then 4 etc till you are playing to fast. This is going to take
some serious concentration and practise to do without error but once you can itll be very
helpful.
So now you've stretched your left hand, warmed up your right and got your rhythm going.
Now you just need to co-ordinate the two hands which can be achieved by playing simple,
fun songs.
Sorry if that was too long, but there's a certain amount of fun in warm ups...

At the risk of sounding like an old fart, I would recommend KANSAS as a
prog band with warm vocals. Not the stuff you hear on the radio ( Carry
On, Dust in the Wind) but some of their longer album cuts. They were
just on Rock line last night promoting a new album due in July
featuring all original members.
I would agree that KANSAS doesn't have the same technical prowess that
DT does, but I would argue that their song writing is much better. I'd
like to hear some other opinions on this topic.

FII is a DREAM THEATER album. They probably would have written it
(or somthing very similar) whether or not Derek was in the band. For my
money, on the FII tour Derek's sound and playing (as well as all the
cool clothes) were the best thing the band had going for them. And I LIKE
FII.

I don't know about the Peruvian Skies/SFAM thing, but have you tried
Emerson, Lake & Palmer? There's a prog band with warm vocals. I suppose
that some Genesis has somewhat warm vocals too, but I certainly wouldn't
want to classify Genesis under any sort or category (i.e. prog), and Peter
Gabriel can get pretty rough with his vocals (in key parts though, he isn't
always "screeching" or however you would describe him). Glad to be of any
help.

True dat! :) While Derek may have been (or is) a little arrogant, and
he is
definately not in the same mindset as the rest of the band where it comes
to
attitude and generally way of life, he is an AWESOME player, with AWESOME
sounds and I enjoy his contributions (sp?) to the band a lot more than what
Jordan has done up to now at least. I dont know.. I guess I just go for his
piano and organ style, and his agressive sounds more than the percussive,
xylophonic rudess sounds. And i most definately prefer Derek's more
jazzy/bluesy (using those terms loosely) piano style , than jordans over the
top classical or circusey (is that even a word) funny style piano. The
first time I was really blown away by Derek was when i watched the japan
video of the waking up the world tour, right when they end TTT
and start to jam, that derek just starts to rip it up on the piano doing
some stuff
that really rocks. (my friend says he starts doing jazzy stuff but switches
to blues in a really cool way, i couldnt say, i really dont like labeling
stuff easily) In any case
I enjoyed that a whole lot more than to hear JR solo over the chord
progressions
and thats it. Granted, JR only played one gig, but still, im pretty sure
that what he'd
do if they were to play that section of TTT again on tour, because its just
his playing style. In summation, I really enjoy Jordan Rudess when he's just
playing behind the band, his string sounds and piano accents are excellent -
behind the band. But each time the man plays a solo, or the spotlight is
turned over to him, I cringe, i really do, but thats just personal opinion.
I think he just overkills.
In any case, this is all just MY OPINION.

I have to agree for the most part. It's just like the intro to One Last
Time. It truly is a really sweet beautiful piano part, but imo, it's
WAY too overplayed for that song. There's lot of other parts I agree
that Jordan probably should have used more than a little restraint, but
I don't think that was the intended flow of the album. This was more of
an album for the band to show off altogether. Maybe I need to fly over
to New York and give Jordan a few lessons on how to play less
intricately. :) It's like that car commercial (Lincoln? Acura?) where
the announcer says, "There comes a point when more is simply... more."

I realize thats your opinion, but come on man, cut the guy some slack. I've talked to Derek several times and he is a pretty nice guy. Its hard not to have a "superstar" attitude when you've done some of the things he's done. I also like his keyboarding, he might not be the best I've ever heard, but I have heard far worst. The Dream Theater cybercast from the House of Blues website (http://www.hob.com) is now available for purchase. Unfortunately, they never tell you how much it costs, until AFTER THEY'VE CHARGED YOUR CREDIT CARD!
Fortunately, it's not unreasonable: $7.99, which is a fair price. You have access to three high-bandwidth streams, and it appears they show the concert over-and-over for 24 hours. I plan on figuring out a way to record a copy to videotape... but only if I remember to purchase a tape soon... <g>
You can also watch low-bandwidth streams for free. Good luck, hope this helps some of you.

I know there are several Tourniquet fans on the jam, myself included. Actually, I just ordered their new CD and was hoping to get some fan reviews myself. Any takers? I have to disagree with calling them a "hard rock metal" band though. They are more of a thrash/speed metal band (at least for the first 4 albums). After that they did some experimenting with there sound, much to the negative reaction on their long-time fans. Rumor has it that the new release is a return to their old sound with a bit more up-to-date twist and some progressive elements thrown in. Guess, I wait to get my copy before getting into that.

I would have to agree that JP's shredding in erotomania was my favourite. that is the first song i played for a lot of my friends (especially that insanely beautiful end part) and they just fell in love. they just wanted to hear it over, and over again. scary thing is, they dont even know what prog is. HAHA. to me, theres something about that last composition. it combines the fantasy with the fun with the dramatic. if you get the chance..hear it again..for the first time..

Hello Ytsefans, Fav parts for me: the instrumental solo (darkest of winters i think) in acos followed by james' beautiful vocals in another world, the WHoo Ohh ohhh Whoo Ohhh Ohhh part in LTL (the entire wfs LTL for that matter), the keyboard solo in ytsejam, the instrumental jam in UAGM (especially the guitar), the instrumental ending of fatal tragedy, strange dv (back on my feet again...), tot (say what you want about derek but the keyboard solo kicks ass and he nailed it perfectly live). the best JP guitar solo in my opinion is the one from live in tokyo, mp's into to 6:00, jlb's vocals in through her eyes (and sfam for that matter), the entire song eve, the entire TDOE, the intro to to Home, (whole song kicks ass). i guess i could keep going. I have finally come to the realization that SFAM is my favorite album. Never thought i would think that when i first heard it, but after listening to I&W and then SFAM, I've realized how much more polished they are musically, lyrically, and vocally. It's their best lyrical album, the story is great (yeah it's a little floydish at times, but so what), best production, and there's nothing on the album that isn't great. The progressive changes are smoother, and I find myself singing along to this album constantly. Great Job DT. Never thought i would say that you could top I&W, but you did it. I still think WFS/LTL(i consider it one song) is my favorite song because it's hard for me to think of SFAM as one song. Finally, for a band to flawlessly pull off that album straight though live like they did floored me. In my opinion there's no rock or prog rock band with the amount of combined talent that DT has. Bass: A, Guitar A+, Drums A+, Keys A++, Vocals A (would be an A+ if he didn't ruin a couple live albums, but every time I saw JLB he was fantastic). Of course everything is my opinion and we can always agree to disagree. still trying to get into Transatlantic. sincerely, Chris
