gimme the scoop as to what happened to Angra and Andre? I'm guessing Andre
left due to the direction they were headed in with the last album - is this

All members of DT, past and present, have names that are pronounced
phonetically, with the exceptions of John Myung (pronounced my YOUNG, but so
fast that it's almost like one sylable) and Charlie Dominici (pronounced
    "Dominisee", not DomiNeeChee)

np: Pain Of Salvation- One Hour by the Concrete Lake (just picked it up, and
HOLY WOW! I haven't been this blown away by a band since...well, since went
to my first moe. show three weeks ago, but...=^). They have a more modern
sound than Dream Theater, mixing prog with death & goth influences rather
than Metallica-style metal...much more theatrical than DT, too (I didn't
know it was possible!). I can't wait to hear Entropia, if it's supposed to
    be so much better....

Bull-fucking-shit. If I'm going to hate someone, I'm not
going to hate him because of his race or religion or sexual
preference or what neighborhood he comes from or what color
bandana he wears. That's Nazism (or neo-Nazism or racism or
whatever). I hate people for something MUCH more dangerous
than that: what they THINK and what they DO - things that
have the potential to do harm to others.

There's a HUGE difference between INCLUSIVE policies and
EXCLUSIVE policies. Women fought for the right to be
included in the process of American Government, and they
won. They fought long enough and they won. What if the KKK
    fights long enough?

I have an alternate theory. When that album came out, guitar
magazines were awesome, MTV was awesome, and radio was awesome. Steve
had just come off the DLR thing, and was into the Whitesnake thing,
and *everyone* knew it, and everyone appreciated it. Not to mention,
there was that three-month teaser ad in all the guitar mags (you
remember, right? Month 1, the top third of the album cover, month 2,
the bottom third...), and basically, no one could shut up about the
guy. Kinda like the late 90s and the BackSpice Sync Girls, except
that there was a reason to go out and buy P&W.

    > lately Steve has really tapped into his guitar tone and the over-all

I still maintain that as good a guitarist as he is, his best gift is
    for capturing sounds on tape.

I've gotten into a bad habit with Myung's name -- I used to (and still do in my mind) pronounce it Me-ung in one syllable. This comes from my hackneyed knowledge of pronouncing Korean names (which I learned from calling said names when they were on the waiting list in the computer lab). Okay, you know too much about my life. But, I *know* Portnoy (who's name I pronounce once as port knee -- I suck) would know better than anybody outside of JohnM's family how to pronounce his name, so I just *know* it's my-young, but DAMMIT I can't say it comfortably.

What they do...? maybe. What they think..? Hell no! You think the Nazis ONLY hated because of race or religion? One of their primary policies was the exclusion of all people who disagreed with them, or had potential to disagree with them.

In addition to jews, blacks, catholics, gypsies, and other assorted races and religions, the nazis also enacted plans against criminals, the homeless, the disabled, left wing sympathizers, and other "leeches".

There's a lot more than just racism that's scary about the Nazis. The entire notion of a government based on survival of the fittest. The notion that anyone who did not believe what they did was literally a scourge upon humanity, and must be destroyed. That's THOUGHT. They were all about hating, arresting, and killing because of what you THOUGHT.

The notion of suppressing anyone, any thing, any act, and any thought which does not fall in line with your ideal of how the world should be. THAT is nazism. Or do you think they burned all those books because they were jewish literature?

    > >There's a HUGE difference between INCLUSIVE policies and >EXCLUSIVE policies.

This is very true. But that doesn't mean I don't have the right to disagree with you if I wanted to.

Sigh - that's what I hate about these fucking rock operas. How the hell can you have an proper opera with only one woman? I get sick of listening to a thousand different men singing at the same time with hardly any females to provide a contrast.

Long cable runs can certainly cause problems. If the cable capacitance is high, (Greater than 20pf per foot) things get rather ugly once you compound the TOTAL capacitance of a long cable run. You've inadvertently installed a low pass filter in the signal path. And then there is the DC resistance per foot to consider... Usually negligible at the input and output impedance he's dealing with. Most modern quality sound cards are fairly quiet, all things considered...

Since the Dukester's more than likely dealing with 3.5 mm stereo phone plugs at the sound card, he's first going to deal with the transformation to RCA plugs. I'd recommend really short 3.5 mm stereo phone plug *to* RCA female adapter cables. (Stereo) Then I'd save bucks by having someone knowledgeable and skilled with a soldering pencil install GOOD RCA male plugs on the desired length of HIGH QUALITY cable. I'd recommend Belden 1694A. Type RG-6 (Or equiv.) Click on the provided link and look at the bottom of the page for "Specify by Trade Number." Then enter the number 1694A. The cable specifications will be provided on data sheet. THIS IS A VERY GOOD AUDIO CABLE AT ANY REASONABLE LENGTH! http://www.belden.com/products/Catalog/index.htm

The cable cost should be about $40.00 - $70.00 USD. (120' - 30'x4) Add $16.00 for (8) acceptable RCA plugs. You may have to hunt around a little to find a retailer or distributor that will sell you bulk cable cut to the length you specify. You may have to buy 50 or 100 foot chunks, but that's OK because you can use the leftover cable to make many shorter interconnect cables for the rest of your audio gear, including car stereo interconnect cables. You could cut your costs in half if your willing to make one stereo pair and swapping them as needed. But I warn you... Sound card jacks don't like frequent cable swaps. They are prone to jack and solder joint failure if you're stressing them. They were never designed to handle heavy usage. They also adopted a plug-n-play engineering mentality! You could buy two adapter pairs and just swap them at the RCA junctions to keep the stress off the 3.5 mm phone jacks. That would save the cost of the additional cable & ends needed to complete the loop for a bi-directional connection to your stereo.

Quality cables are also far less susceptible to RFI and other cable related idiosyncrasies. Skimping is for retards.

    >*- ok, not for sure, the outlets might be at the same ground potential. >But that's not overly likely.

They DAMN well better be!!! EARTH GROUND is common to ALL electrical outlets, as is the neutral line. ALL outlet neutral and ground lines tie together at the breaker/fuse panel. (At least their supposed to)

The computer SHOULD have a 3-conductor grounded plug. The stereo may only have a 2-conductor plug, and if it's newer, it's more than likely polarized. (One contact is larger) In the event the stereo has a non polarized plug, swapping the plug around could cure any AC hum in the unlikely event that it becomes an issue.

It's a VERY good idea to do this little installation test with ALL audio gear that uses non polarized plugs: Plug in the AC line cord with all other cables disconnected and check for AC voltage on any conductive part of the case. (Place one meter lead on the case and the other at the outlet ground) Swap the plug around and read it again. Once you discover the direction that reveals the least amount of AC leakage to the case, mark the plug and continue to observe that polarity whenever returning the plug to the outlet. Repeat this with ALL gear that does not use polarized plugs, particularly those that will have their cases tied together via common ground unbalanced cables. (RCA) This can (And usually does) lower the noise floor of ANY system.

I just bought Transatlantic! Damn, this is a fantastic disk! Sort on Yes and Genesis, with a goodly amount of Crowded House thrown in (oh yes! really!). Great stuff, apart from the last track, which is a bit crappy. Portnoy sounds UNRECOGNISABLE!! Wow, he rea;ly can play like Bruford! Anyone have any details of the kit he used, 'cos in the photo, it sure doesn't look like his normal monster truck-sized one.

    And no double-bass fills either!!!

Ooh, ooh! Me too! I love that solo. Is it just me, or is the volume swell part just a little like "Within Without You" from Sgt. Pepper?

    >I really hate the mindless guitar solo shred on OIALT, >I skip it every single time I listen the CD. :( >Why did he need that to put on live album?

Well, I like all the solos; it's just that on a live album with limited space, I just don't see the point. Add up Petrucci's 7-minute noodlefest and Portnoy's rumba which runs to about 5 minutes...I mean, leave that off, and they could virtually have played all of ACoS on the disk!

Not to mention: how long after it lights up will you see the light from the bulb from where you stand with your hand on the switch?

Answer: never. Because if you can see a lightbulb on the other side of the planet...You probably don't need your eyes tested.

Music software company Napster said today it has blocked 317,377 user screen names that have been identified by Metallica as allegedly infringing on the rock band's copyrights. Last week, the band delivered 13 boxes full of legal documents identifying user names of people who allegedly had made Metallica songs available online and demanded that they be blocked from the MP3 music-swapping service.
