"produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, the Black Crowes)"

methinks they forgot a band in that list :)

a single riff, or hum a single melody. There's plenty of notes, but no

i think that in a live setting it's more the image the band projects that

I forget who posted about this originally, but I found a way to keep
your folders manageable. I apologize if this has been posted already,
but my excuse is that I didn't see it (and I think I'm caught up on
    jams).

Anyway, select "Edit" and "preferences" at the bottom of the list that
appears. A new window will pop up. From there, double click on
"Advanced" along the left side of the window and three more options will
appear. Click on "disk space" and then make sure that the box next to
"Automatically compact folders when it will save over" is checked. It
apparently is not checked by default, which seems strange to me.

    Hope that helped,

    Hi
I am a member of the Dream Theater International fan club, and have been given
your email address as somewhere that you can post a request for me on a
mailing list of Dream Theater fans. I hope that is correct.

I am after a copy of each of Dream Theater's Free Fanclub Christmas CD's from
1996 and 1998. The fan club have run out of stocks, and suggested i took this
    route to obtain them ...
They could either be an unwanted copy, or a CDR copy ... I don't mind

I would be so grateful if you could locate them for me, or put out the
request - people can contact me on my email address if they can help.
I hope this is not putting you to any unnecessary trouble, and thank you very
    much in anticipation.

    Yours sincerely,

About this woodstock stuff. I heard that the crowd was pretty
frustrated because of the high prices of drinks and everything. Plus
that they didn't let you take bottles of water in so you would have to
consume their corporate very expensive drinks.
Hey, after all, Metallica played. :-)

Anyway, how much is true of what I wrote?
Well, even before you answer, it is pretty obvious that not
everybody could have had the same motive. But I could imagine
that it was "in the air".
And by the way, if they really did it for the above reasons, thats
kinda cool. Well, as long as noone gets hurt. It is cool because
today there is no Vietnam (wel, thats not true either), but there is
something else that is worth raising a voice about.

            Anyway, now react please. :-)

Yes, they are a cheap and easy way of collecting boots. Of course, the
sound quality suffers, there are pops between tracks, and occasionally the
person downloading the MP3s doesn't get them all or gets them in the wrong
order (ie, one of the shows I got yesterday with the first song missing and
two other songs out of order). But hey, if it's cheap and easy, who cares
    about the overall quality, right?

Just make sure label those shows as MP3. Otherwise you're ripping off
legitimate traders looking for the real thing... (But at least you're not
    selling them.) :-)

Has anyone mentioned Under the Sun here yet? Mosey on
over to http://www.magnacarta.net and give them a
listen. And, hey, MC FINALLY pulled their collective
heads from you-know-where and are now including clips
from all the songs on an album, instead of a measly
    one little 30 second clip.

Anyway, on the Spock's Beard mailing list, someone
called them a rather unoriginal Yes ripoff. This
comment was made by someone who is obviously
tone-deaf. Think more prog rock than prog metal -
like a slightly more serious version of Spock's Beard.
It's not hard to tell that these guys have MONSTER

Geh! You really think so? SRV was a groundbreaker! Who else would
have been able to make blues solos fit into a David Bowie tune? Not
to mention the set up of his guitar. You ever play one of those SRV
models? .12's, about a foot off the neck. You could shoot arrows
with this thing, and he made it sing.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Of course DT have their wank-fest sections, but they fit into the songs, rather than the songs fitting around the wank-fest sections.

Again, there's definitely some value to Dali's music, because I know some people absolutely love it. Maybe I'm just getting older, but I've gotten to a stage where I appreciate songs more than soloing, or whatever.

Actually, it was written as an opera. (And perhaps the only one with a happy ending. :) The whole thing was conceived as a whole -- the music, the lyrics, the story, the characters. That's why everything seems to fit.

Breathtaking, if you ask me. The CGT is one of the most original bands I've discovered recently. I strongly recommend any of their stuff to anyone who wants some idea of what else can be done with a guitar.

On that subject, anyone know where I can get my hands on one of those fan-fret guitars?

While not officially part of the NYC crew, I will definitely be there, even after seeing them at Nearfest. But I am concerned with the venue. Wetlands is small, hot and smokey. Considering that DT sold out Roseland and Marillion sold out Irving Plaza on their last tour, I think Wetlands will pack us in like sardines. I wish they could have gotten a bigger venue, like Irving Plaza or the Bowery Ballroom (where LTE played).

<< The thing I have a problem with is that I think progressive bands like DT and Steve Vai should really be as original and creative as they can. >>

Steve is obviously one of the most creative musicians in the world. Pick any song off of Flex-Able or Flex-Able Leftovers and you'll see that in .2 seconds. Every one of Steve's records is just another stroke of genius and creativity...who else would record a cat having an orgasm?

Frank Zappa hired him for Christ's sakes, you don't even have to listen to Steve's music to know he's a creative as hell SOB after knowing that! hahaha..

Jiboom does have a lot of SRV inspired pieces, but there are also millions of Vai-Isms in the song. If we didn't take inspiration from anyone...we'd all sound pretty damn boring. Have you ever heard a musician say, "Nothing inspires me, as a matter of fact, I hate all music, even my own music pisses me off...." I don't think we'd even have anything in life if it weren't for inspiration.. We're all inspired to do something by something else...

nique > and more technique. To hell with feeling :o)>

I said the same thing about 3 years ago...then I (again more Vai promotion) HEAVILY got into Vai and realized that it IS possible to mix the best of both worlds. Petrucci is a perfect example as well.

BUT-if you want some very technique oriented players: Buckethead Marty Friedman Steve Howe Joe Satriani Eric Johnson Alex Lifeson Mike Keneally Steve Stevens Micheal Angelo (Mostly known for the double neck playing...2 necks at the same time, one strung left handed..legato madness)

    There a MILLIONS out there...

Oh my God. I can't even begin to imagine ... Destroy Erase Improve and City are two of my favorite REALLY HEAVY albums right now. For those two guys to collaborate ... <licks chops> ... <drools> ...

    >From: "Philip J. Kaplan" <pk@pkinteractive.com> >There's a part in the Dali's Dilemma disc where they play, note-for-note, a >good chunk of Metropolis I. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I would guess you're referring to the instrumental section of "Living in Fear," but I wouldn't say it's note-for-note. It does sound a LOT like the little "build-up" section of Met. I, but the notes and time sigs are different.

I think Dali's is a good band. I'm a little partial to the vocals, and it's true that some (I would say half) of the instrumental interludes aren't very memorable or seem to not fit, but I generally like the album. My favorites are "Despite the Waves", "This Time Around" and "Hills of Memory". These songs actually have good melodies, IMHO, and I find myself singing along from time to time. Hopefully the next time around, they'll develop a bit more of their own sound, and trim a bit of the excess (yes, I am a DT fan and did indeed just type that).

Well, I've got it. And I've traded it with at least 5 or 6 other people. Plus, I know two other people that grabbed it off the net via fast connect. So it's definitely out there. But yes, make sure to check the source if you're trading for this show.

    Definitely not cool.

BTW, what is the status of the CD Tree that was made for the Roseland Ballroom show? I had signed up a month ago but haven't heard anything since.

I still say it's "Freedom of Speech"'s key riff 4 minutes or so in, from LTE1
