I think there is a Dream Theater list for only Dream Theater content. If
you don't want any of the fluff that would be a good list to be on
only. I've been on this list for the past 4 years now and while sometimes
it can get out of hand for the most part its all been interesting. At
least most of it's music based and not politics.

Actually, I read the Ytsejam more for non-DT stuff than for DT
stuff. I want to hear about new bands and I actually enjoy thinking
about issues like Napster (usually). I also don't mind the occasional
CD sale -- I've even found a few cheap CDs that way. The "make $$$" spams
are not due to anyone on this list. The ytsejam email address is just on
    a spam list somewhere.
It's the nature of a group of people who like one thing to also
discuss other things. Personally, I enjoy it and benefit from it.

Check out "Entropy". They're prog metal in the vein of
Queensryche, Fates Warning and DT. The singer has a
pretty good range (tends to be lower than most
prog-metal), and sings with lots of "emotion" or
"emphasis" or "drama" or whatever the hell you want to
call it. But it's good drama, like Geoff Tate in the
early days. Pushing the boundry of drama without going
    overboard.

    On the other hand:

    > Now the Shadow Gallery disc Tyranny, I'm having a
    reall problem getting
    > to like. It's sounds very 80's glammy to me -- I'm
    still trying and

Well, this is a controversial subject. Let's just say
that it's a matter of taste. IMHO, they push that
"drama" thing to the edge, and then jump over. Some
people have been known to rename this band Cheese
Gallery or Shadow Cheesery. You get the idea. A lot of
people really like them though, so as usual, it's up
    to you to decide...

I agree with you to some extent, but I know that a lot of college students really care about sound quality you're referring to. The only thing is, they do not have enough money to buy good stuff.

My stereo equipment consists of a Sony mini system, and two additional speakers. I know I could be enjoying my cd's much more when I bought a high-end system, but I can't afford it. I'm a college student you know.

Apart from that, in my former room I had 10 square metres to fill, so I didn't really have a choice to put my speakers at the perfect spots. A bed, drawer, desk and chair filled almost the entire room.

I agree that there are a lot of people who don't care about sound quality, but I am convinced that there are also a lot of people who care, but can't buy/place the equipment you're talking about.

To the person asking for a recommendation on the new Kamelot live album, it's awesome. If you've heard the studio albums with Khan on vocals, and you like them, then you will definitely love this disc. The quality of the recording is great and the performance is very good. The song selection is very good as well. If you've never heard Kamelot before, I would put them under the power metal label, although they sound different from Helloween and Gamma Ray.

To the person asking what Pain of Salvation sounds like, they sound very unique. Their music is very progressive and very original, unlike any other prog band I've heard. The music goes very well with the lyrics, with changes according to the emotions being portrayed on them (it's hard to explain, but get Entropia and I think you'll know what I mean). The vocalist is awesome, with a range from growling to the thinnest high notes. The musicianship is top notch. Give them a try, you won't be dissapointed. Well, hope this helps.

Mr. Phil Carter said: >Just because he doesn't like it and doesn't find any emotion in it does NOT >make his opinion any less valid! >You like Pain of Salvation. That's nice. Brian doesn't like Pain of >Salvation. That's nice.

Agreed Phil. Certainly Brian isn't obligated to like Pain of Salvation at all.

But I think some of us are within reason to be rather surprised that the reason is because their music seems un-emotional to him.

Hypothetically: Let's say that you're telling me how awesome Meshuggah is, but I disagree. When you ask me why I don't like Meshuggah, I say that it's because I like heavy music, and I find Meshuggah's music to be way too mellow and not heavy enough.

I'd certainly be entitled to opinion....... but the fact of the matter is that I probably have some kind of brain damage to think that. =)

I understand what you're saying, and I've heard it a million times around: no music is "better" because everyone has different tastes! Now that is obviously true, to a point. I can argue that the overly romantic Chuck Schumann was a psycho retard who couldn't compose his way out of the cardboard box of self-loathing that he made for himself, but that's just my opinion, and there are equally valid opinions (so long as they are intelligent) which could contradict that.

The point is: Progressive (cap 'P') IS better! There is LITTLE arguing this, so long as your definition of "better" is more virtuosic, more complex, more difficult, longer, more musical, etc. etc. It's the friggin definition of the musical type. People who like prog music usually DON'T like other pop-types of music because they are too repatitive and simple.

Now, if your definition of "better" is "more pleasing to the ear," then it's all subjective. If you can get as much joy out of listening to N'Sync as I can from listening to Dream Theater, then more power to ya. I personally can't, and that's just the way it is.

And I'm always right, so blo me.

Excited to have something new from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, I rushed out and picked up the soundtrack to the new "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" movie on which the TSO has a new track. Wow! What a horrible lump of crap this soundtrack is. Featuring new songs by Busta Rhymes and Jim Carrey (blah), Barenaked Ladies (okay if you like that sort of thing), Little Isadore and the Inquisition (who? terrible song), Ben Folds (not bad), Smash Mouth (not too bad), The Eels (yuck), Jim Carrey doing "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" (okay, but doesn't beat the original), 'N Sync (wow, that's bad), and Faith Hill (almost as bad as 'N Sync).

So the TSO track, is pretty good. It's really two songs that they've put together on one track as a "medley," although the songs are so different it's ridiculous. The first song, "Perfect Christmas Night," is a jazzy little tune with a female vocalist. "Grinch" is your more traditional TSO tune with crunching guitars and Jon Oliva muttering "grinch" in his evil demon voice...heheheh...pretty cool.

Anyway, that's my $.02. If you're going to get it, get it on sale - $11.99 at Circuit City or Best Buy.

Shane (still hoping that TSO comes to Atlanta this Christmas!)

It's because Queensryche are a bunch of cumguzzling man-twats, as was evidenced this past summer.

    ;D

DTC: How about some speculations on the next album? I know it's early for it, but let's have some fun and bring some good DT content back to the jam. What do you expect? What would you like to hear? Etc.

One thing I know I'd love to hear is a bit more involvement from Jordan, as we all know he took kind of a back seat in the writing process for SFAM. And I'd love to hear him do backing vocals with the rest of the band as well (minus Myung, who can't even speak let alone sing ;). Another thing I'd love and I've always wanted to hear from DT is bigger-sounding orchestration (more guest musicians?) in the style of Angra or Trans-Siberian Orchestra. And of course it's always cool to explore new styles (as per the JP/JR acoustic show ... some of those ideas could have even been expanded for DT material, IMHO).

I'm kind of excited to see how this one turns out also because the songs will have individual identities, and there will be more freedom with the lyrics and whatnot. I'd love to see a return to the older, better (IMO) level of DT lyric-writing ... the lyrics from I&W and Awake have been the most inspirational for me personally.

So what do YOU think the guys will come up with this time around?

    Peace, Brian
