hi all,
I am looking for a song, name, artist , lyrics of a piece I heard at a
bonfire. The singer said it was Doobie Bros, but the homepage says no.
I thought with so many people out here somebody could help.
Here's what I remember:
So gotta let your soul shine,
it's better than sunshine,
better than moonshine,
and damn sure better than rain.
...(mesa don't remember this line)
it's just a waste of time,
so you gotta let your soul shine,
shine til the break of day.
Something like that. If anybody could help - thanks in advance.
Sab

I second that last recommendation. "Sprit of Live" is a
great live album that I think every Vanden Plas fanatic
really would appreciate. But someone will have to explain
to me who the hell Don Dokken is! :o)

My question posed before those of the Shredi council is this: Where does the truth dwell - in gauge 9 or gauge 10? I have harnessed my chops for two years, much in the focused practicing style of Master Petrucci. Yet, I ran across a "hack" training in the Panterian Arts who shredding above and beyond me. I suspect the reason is that his Ibanez is equipped with 9's, whereas mine with 10's. I have NEVER touched 9's on my guitar, due to the advice of my teacher. Yet, JP uses them and I am guessing that the list is long. From ear it seems most everyone except Vai. Which is the superior shredding string? In addition, which is the superior pick width for shredding? I prefer thin, floppy picks that bend when I push on them, but it seems from a physics standpoint that this is a bad idea.
I eagerly await the correct response, Padawan Lorik

Hey now. You may have missed my point. :) "Universe TO BE DOMINATED" meaning that our local shredi should come out and tear some shit up. Really, though... this is a guitarist's alternative to Quake III. It's Mortal Combat meets Ralph Macchio. There ARE some great players there. As long as you look at it as "all in good fun" it's a good time. There are crappy players there and there are some shredders. Check out the 500 club... there's some good cats in there. Yes, this is a silly web site... it's a silly, but ingenious concept. They're going to ALWAYS have people at the site. It's dark and insidious. Yes, this is sort of a "my dad can beat your dad up" kind of concept, but you need some base pleasures in life. It's a good way to get a feeling for what people think of your playing... this is one demographic guitarists will have to deal with... their peers. Why not do it for free before you release an album. The place is mostly confined to people who aren't in major bands... those folks already have an audience... and are often too busy. And besides, I've got some samples up there, and I have been playing guitar for a year, and can play Black Star and Eruption flawlessly. As long as you don't look at it as a serious competition, it's a healthy way to learn what people do and do not like about your playing. I'm just scared because I think I'm getting a better response for my euro-style metal than I will for my normal vibe! Hehehe My advice: put your money where your mouth is, and stop being a "serious" guitarist. :)

As a shredi of only so few years of practicing in my apartment and performing for the neighborhood dogs, I can offer you this advice. Try out both gauge sets, see what thicknesses you like, as far as the sound timbres, ease of bend and execution of notes, for each particular string. I'm too lazy to do this, so I stick with the standard 10 gauge strings myself...well, okay, I used to use 9's but decided to hike up to the more accessable 10's 'cuz I'm a sucker for thin-but-not-thin-enough-to-fish-with strings.
Reports of other master shredi vary on what kind of string thickness and action you should use. Petrucci falls somewhere in the middle of the crowd, with a hybrid pack where the first three (them high notes) strings are based off a 9 gauge set and the lower three are based off some thicker set (I'm probably wrong about this, I've never used it for my own gear, but it is a nice set up).
Stevie Ray Vaughn and Marty Friedman like(d) their strings high and thick, and they were successful in creating emotion, mood, and (I use the term loosely here for blues guitar ;) ) shred. I'm not sure if Dimebag Darrell falls in this category as well (10's are a bit more durable to the whammy dives and guitar screams that he routinely uses in his soloing than the little 9's) but he might use really low action, as opposed to the other two dudes I just mentioned. I have one of Marty's instructional vids and he likes to keep the action quite high, high enough that he could play slide guitar easily on it...or something to that effect.
As far as chromatic, single string scalar and trem picking shred goes, the easiest way to improve accuracy and speed (well, besides the copious amounts of practice and metronome insanity)--mind you, in my experience--is to lower the action of the strings. Stanley Jordan puts his strings so low to the fret board, you can't even slip a penny between the two...but this is for his 8 finger tap technique. I wouldn't recommend doing it that low if you plan on using other techniques besides tapping (like...everything else). Nonetheless, another bonus to lowering your action is the ease of doing legato slur runs and mega-tap techniques.
Just keep in mind, I'm assuming you're putting in the practice at the very least an hour a day if you're out to destroy some wankers on guitarwar.com :)

Again, this falls into the "whatever the hell you like" category of fine Ytsejam answers. After learning of Petrucci's fondness of the Dunlop jazz III picks (little, red, pointy.) I picked up a handful at guitar center and have been using them since--because I really liked how well they worked for my shredi techniques and the size of the plectrum (I remember the last time I used the words "small" and "pick" in here, Korg...) forced me to focus more on my precision and cleaning up my playing.
For a guy who doesn't have any recorded songs or anything to really show for it, I sure have a lot to say about this crap....

Yeah, if you've been playing for only one year, I'm just going to sell all my gear, give up and become a keyboard player! Bwahahahaha!
I've been playing for 5, but it still sounds like I've been playing for 2 years. :) Maybe changing these year old strings on my $150 clunker Ibeenhad will sound better through my $300 Rocktron Chameleon and $30 sound blaster!

hey guys, sorry if this is off topic but it is very important to me.
Here it is: the final week for Cea Serin. This is the last week for the metal search 2000 contest in which Cea Serin is a finalist. The contest that will award one band a record deal with Metal Blade records.
If you haven't yet heard yet, we are Cea Serin and we are a "mercurial metal" band. We do not adhere to any set sound or style. We can only be described as sounding like "Cea Serin."
An amalgam or tastes and class; a mixture of style and substance, truly a paramount to the word "progressive" these days. Of course, there are elements of the extreme metal, i.e., death, black, etc. But these are only to compliment the vast array of textures and emotions within the songs. There are also moments of melodic metal, world (a la steel drums in Sudden Faith for example), new age (serene multi textured backdrops), jazz/blues, and all other elements from around the world.
But these changes and facets are not to take away from the fluid song writing that makes music so enjoyable. Instead, the songs are well structured and harmonious from start to finish.
If you have yet to hear Cea Serin, then come by and see why we have been nominated for this contest out of so many other bands.
There are currently 8 death metal bands, 1 electronica band, and one "progressive" band...Cea Serin.
We would absolutely love it, if you all could come by and give a listen to Cea Serin and cast a vote in our favor.
The votes mean a lot in the contest, as well as the page hits and download/plays we get on our mp3.com page. Not to mention the heat we get from the message boards.
So please come by and help out a struggling and hard working progressive band realize the goal they've been striving for.
Thanks to all that have voted for us and supported us in the past, your kindness and generosity is eternally appreciated.
thanks J. Lamm
