    Hi all

all this talk of Spam made me think it was perhaps time
for me to unleash another YTSE cocktail on the
unsuspecting members of this list. So sit back and
    enjoy the

    SPAM SHAKE

    1 tin of Spam
    1 tin of anchovies
    2 12oz cans of beer
    4 oz tomato juice
    1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
    1/2 cup chopped parsley
    1/4 cup chopped onions
    dash of Tabasco
salt (as if you'd need it), pepper to taste

Put everything in blender and blend until smooth.

I have it on good authority that James LaBrie uses this
to oil his vocal chords before going on stage.

    stay safe and happy drinking

Well whilst soundgarden and alice in chains and pearl jam all had that same Seattle
sound in some way, they were all pretty much just Led Zep bands.
When Nirvana came out they had that more 80s sound (like the Cure, the Posies,
the Saints all them), but they also had that really heavy punk sound. Plus Kurt
did have a very charismatic voice, and it was so fucking terrible, that it became
good. He also had a great sense of melody and his riffs were killer. Plus
Dave Grohl's drumming was very creative and quite good compared to your
    typical garage punk band.

    > Someone should right a song about this.

I think you should learn to spell.

Once again I come to the defence of musicians who are better than you.
If you listen to most of Santana's stuff, its all just pop. Ever since the 1960s.
(Well apart from the obvious stuff, like Plus he's always tried to colloborate where ever he can with famous bands
    and musicians.
I think its great that he got famous and all, and that people are listening
to real music not just synthesized, band-in-a-box stuff, for a change.

    Guys,

An interview that I did with Jordan Rudess is now out in the October issue
    of Keyboard magazine.

Most of the interview, plus an extended interview is available on their
    website: http://www.keyboardmag.com

Also, Jordan is about to get an Online Conservatory started up. So, if you
ever wanted to take online lessons from him, here is your chance!

If DT is even remotely professional - and I have a hunch they are - then
they'll remember not to take their anger out on the fans that showed up.

doing stand-up comedy, i can't count the times I got placed near the end
of the list, after a string of bad performers. One time half the club
left just as I went on, because three people before me had bombed. what
am I going to do, get bitchy at the ones that STAYED? Of course not. I
tried even harder, and won over the pittance of an audience that
remained. And that's what it's about. I mean, otherwise, why be in the
    business?

well i guess in my case it's not quite a business, seeing as how that
would imply financial transactions(not counting free coke).

Recently I've had a chance to see a guitarist performing. He was playing
some great stuff, which in terms of phrasing, tone and articulation sounded
    like killer slide guitar licks.
The point is: He wasn't using slide to play this!

I've started to work on emulating slide playing with my whammy.
It's a totally new thing for me tho, so if anyone could give some hints on
that matter, I'd be very happy. Thanks in advance

The new Steve Vai "The 7th Song" will be out Nov. 7th. It will be a
collection of the 7th song from each of his records plus 3 new tracks. 777
of the cd booklets will be signed and numbered by Vai himself and randomly
sent to record stores. This will be the first of 12 'Archives' albums that
he will release over the next several years.

    Brian Larkin hath spaketh:

<<My vote goes to the blacks, for one reason: CONTROL. The reds are
    not only
a softer plastic, but they're glossy, so they slip and slide across
    the
strings very easily, and they're harder to maintain a firm grip on.
    This
becomes a serious issue if you're trying to gain control and
    precision with
    alternate, economy and sweep picking.>>

Well, *I* recently switched from blacks to reds simply because they
produced less friction. I think they make sweeping easier simply
because they glide over the string better, and I never had problems
with control. In fact, it almost feels like I have more control with
the reds. When I tried witching back, the blacks felt TOO stiff.

On a side note about strings: I recently started tuning my 10 set
down to D standard (ala Romeo and Gilbert) and the feel is pretty
damn cool :-). Nice thick strings feeling as slinky as 9s...whee!

Of course, this is all my opinion. I could be completely wrong ;-).

Right on Kurt! Nirvana is one band that I absoutely cannot stand. I despise
every note that came out of that band. Your entire post was great.

Next Vai cd-7th Heaven-A collection of all the 7th songs, (all ballads), off
his past cd's, including 3 new tracks. That's released on Nov. 7th,
    (apropriatley).

After that, we get a live disc of songs that were recorded on the Ultra Zone
tour, (all overseas), which Steve has promised to not do any overdubs on.
    (Definitely a big Yay).

Eric Johnson is also releasing his live Alien Love Child stuff soon, probably
has something about that on FavordedNations.com, (I know it's one
    EricJohnson.com).

If any of you happen to be in Malaysia, the original G3 line up, (Steve Vai,
Eric Johnson, and Joe Satriani), are doing a string of shows over there. And
After Thanksgiving, Steve is doing a small tour of South America, on his own.

The infamous box set is due out mid-to-late 2001.

If you haven't heard the new song from 7th Heaven that was posted on Vai.com,
try Napster. It's a great song called "Boston Rain Melody", one of his
    absolute best.

<<2 of jps guitars that were on his website last week are now on ebay. The
    blueburst 7 string, and the P1 graphics 7 string....way cheaper than $5k....>>

Uh, sorry buddy, but the guitars were started off at $5K, and the reserve
wasn't even met. So he's planning on selling them for a lot more than he paid
for them. The guy who bought them spent half his years sallary on them, and
his wife didn't know. Once she found out, she wasn't to pleased. (No, that's
    not a guess...).

If I only had $5K last week...

I registered at GuitarWar.com the other day, I'm on as EvoReaper. I won't be
posting anything up until I get some recording software and A LOT more
memory, but I'll judge and whatnot. I think the site kicks ass. It's great
how we can do so much stuff on the internet. I think this also gives us the
chance to eat some of that humble pie we all need at times when we're sitting
there thinking, "Man, I can play every Vai and DT song known to man, and I
can write some really great stuff. As a matter of fact, I'm probably one of
the best guitarist in my area....". Then you go onto GuitarWar.com and listen
to some of these Mp3's and hear that *some* of these guys are writing some
REALLY creative stuff....that kicks your stuff's ass. :-)

I did notice a lot of Satriani freaks on there. Which isn't necessarily a bad
thing. Of course your going to see Eddie Van Halen wannabe's
everywhere...haven't heard any Vai type's yet though. Not much for Petrucci
    either....

    Anyways, later!

Does music have to be technical and challenging? Do technique and
"challenge" alone give music its value? Or are other aspects involved,
like creativity and expressiveness? I've heard a lot of "technical" and
"challenging" music that sounds stale, uninspired, and overdone ... and
frankly, I'd rather hear "Lithium" or "In Bloom" over that music any day.
Why? Those songs are cohesive, simple, creative, energetic ... done well
for what they were. And that's why they connected with people - that's
"what" the big deal was about Nirvana.

Do fucking LYRICS have to be "technical" or "challenging"?!?! I have a
suggestion for you, friend. Go listen to everyone's favorite album, Scenes
from a Memory. Tell me you find more than 10-20% of the lyrics on that
album thought-provoking and well-written. Or if you agree that the lyrics
suffered for the purpose of tying together Met. 2's storyline, how about a
song like "Burning My Soul"? Now does the fact that I'm not impressed with
the lyrics impact my overall enjoyment of the music? Of course not. SFAM
is probably my favorite album of all time, definitely in the top 5 if
    anything.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the written lyric when it's done well.
But was Cobain going for literature awards, or was he trying to be freely
    poetic, abstract?
What kind of audience was he trying to appeal to? Etc.

    >To put it another way they just plained sucked.

Tastelessly put, and with grammatical errors to boot. ;)

    >That was BEFORE Kurt decided to go blow his head off. Such a cool name
    >too, he brings shame to my name.

    You're kidding, right?

    >Anyways after his death he was
    >immortilized and Nirvana's music all of a sudden was even greater, sold
    >more etc etc.

What's your point here? Is this something we don't know?

    >Someone should right a song about this.

Better yet, someone should "write" a song about it. Maybe I will. I'll
call it "Why 64th Notes and College Dictionary Words Do Not Always a Good
Musical Statement Make", and I'll load it up with 64th notes and the most
difficult of college dictionary words. Top 40, here I come!

    >My girlfriend was listening to Passion and Warfare with me in the car.
    >her remark : "this is sanatana without the latin influence" True to some
    >extent, but I replied "Vai is a guitar god, Sanatana WAS one until that
    >piece of crap he released to make $$."

    Not true to any extent.

Hey, guess what! I think Steve Vai might have released "Passion and
Warfare" with the intent of making some money (aside from the obvious
intent of furthering his "guitar god" status with a revolutionary
    instrumental album).

    >Umm I think thats all.

    Umm ok.

    >When does the new Vai cd come out? I can't wait
    >for that and the new nir-wait I forgot he's dead.
    <completely tasteless jokes snipped>

You know, it's this level of ignorance and thoughtless disrespect that
often gives this list a bad name. Grow up, dude.

By the way, I'm sure James LaBrie wouuld appreciate you exploiting his
unfortunate situation at that show in your signature to get attention. I
    know I'd be upset.

I won't give away Ptacek's secret identity (yet), but I'm registered as Shredi
Eckie on there. Of course, I'm too much of a pansy (and a lazy bastard) to
have anything recorded to post there yet. Hey, gimme a few more days, maybe
weeks... but not months.... I still have a logo and some term papers to
    create :)

out in pain and vanishing all at once

Someone did write a song about this. At list that=B4s what I heard. Check=
     out
the album Afraid of Sunlight by Marillion. The last song "King" is somewh=
    at
Cobain=B4s story. Actually the whole album is about the same theme. I am =
    not
sure if the song is inspired by Cobain=B4s life, but it comes to mind whe=
    n you
    hear the last verse:
"And they call you a genious, cause you=B4re easier to sell.
But the fire in your belly, that gave you the songs, is suddenly gone.
And you feel like a fake. Is that what you want.
I hope for your sake, you what what it takes, to be spoiled to death"

In my opinion one of Hogarth=B4s best lyrics. And great song. Check it ou=
    t....

um, i think everyone who has replied seems to be missing the joke in this
line. i think he was referring to JLMB... or maybe not, who knows, but if
not, then this is the sound of me pointing out that DT *did* write a song
    about it, hehe.

haha its posts like that that make the jam great. if we weren't all a bunch
of uptight prog snobs with no sense of humor, this list would be a whole lot
    more boring. :) moo.
