    Hey Guys

Shedding I think is easiest with 10's if you do mostly alternate or sweep=

picking. They offer more resistance so your pick will not trap up in the=

string, so it will bounce off easier. With 9's, you pick can stay on the=

string longer if you pick straight down due to the extra "slinkiness." B=
    ut
they are better for legato because they are easier to hammer/pull off on.=
      I
thought that John Petrucci switched to 10's when i started using the erni=
    e
ball strings during the Falling into Infinity tour. That's what it said =
    in
the guitar shop that came out around then. I also have found that thin p=
    icks
are horrible if you want to play fast. I love the thick jazz shaped pick=
    s. =

They just seem to move faster. And both 10's and thick picks =3D more vo=
    lume if
you need it. And about the Jazz III's. John Petrucci uses the black one=
    s. =

Eric Johnson uses the red ones. The black ones are a thicker plastic so =
    you
get more click but is still stronger so you're lines stick out more. The=
     red
is a softer plastic so it yields a smoother tone. this is what i have no=
    ticed
through trying them both. hope this helps out.

    Thank you, Good Night
    Eric Thibaut/Ned Rapture (you choose)

Online music retailer Boxman has just collapsed. That's a shame. I ordered
lots of CDs from them; they had a good collection of my kind of music, at
very decent prices compared to normal UK retail prices.

In fact, I still have one open order with them, with one item outstanding.
The good thing is their policy was not to charge until *all* items had
been dispatched, so it looks like the item which I did receive will end up
    being a freebie.

Now I have to find another place to order the new Symphony X album from.

My god, my brain is bleeding from reading that post! I've never known anybody who can write so much about nothing. Congrats brutha'. You even bored the hell out of me -- which is no easy feat mind you. ;) Just play whatever the hell feels good to you -- there ain't no secrets...

    >"Chris Ptacek" <someone@digitalrodent.com> >and I have been playing guitar for a year, and can play Black Star and Eruption flawlessly.

Would you like a cookie Chris? Even though I highly doubt the above -- I give you credit for posting it. Or maybe I'm misjudging your sarcasm?

The whole idea about this Shredi site just proves how cock sure guitarists are. I'm sure there are some, a few, decent guitarists on there amongst the "I've been playing for 1 - 3 years, look what I can play" 'kids'. Gee, I think I'll bookmark it right now! The bottom line is....if you're playing to impress people and not for yourself, you'll never be anything. And if you claim you are posting at this site to get feedback about your playing, you're foolish and incompetent because no one who's been playing for years and years and actually has intelligent feedback is ever going to sit and waste a day searching through Gig's of crap to find that one person to give advice to.

On a lighter note....just ordered Levin, Stevens, Bozio latest album. (Sorry the name is slipping me) can't wait for it!

Hehe, I tried playing Scuttle Buttin on my bluesy friend's 13s once and nearly broke my fingers. And I play 11s. I know this topic is way to geeky and boring for most people but let me sum it up how I see it- 8s: If you can get a good tone with these good luck. Malmsteen does. Stay away from them tho. 9s: If you're shredder and you care if you can play Flight of the Bumble Bee at 200bmp instead of 180bmp then these will probably do. 10s: Good choice for the 'all-rounder' guitarist (ie. studio musicians, fast but not shredding fast type stuff). 11s: I like these. You can get reasonable speed without too much difficulty and the tone is so much better. You start to lose out on the Metallica jams and stuff which can be annoying. 13s: This is blues guitar territory, if you really couldn't give a fuck for speed or if you have huge fingers.

Let me also remind people of Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia doing there thing on steel string guitars. Also get your hands on some classical guitar stuff. Im not big into this stuff, other than whats in the local scene, but I can say check out David Russel and Julian Breams stuff for some shredding classical guitar stuff.

Just wanted to comment on the statement by Mr. Shields. Heheh Dude, you'd better be joking. I can GUARANTEE that you can't tell the difference between my Ibanez string with .010 and .009 gauge. I would put money on it. On a single coil, it begins to get noticable.

I know you are kidding around with your "weenies" comment, but I think that's misleading and it's bad advice. For the purposes of learning to play faster IT DOES matter which set you can play more notes on. If you're satisfied with where you are musically, then that's a great decision for you... but for someone trying to learn how to shred, telling them that playing with light gauge strings is a bad idea is well... a bad idea.

I love it when people get all high and mighty about their string gauge. It has always given me an opportunity to prove them wrong in person when I can pick up their guitar and shred on it just as if it were .009's. I will tell you plainly that I practice all my shredi arts on an acoustic with .013's and an archtop with semi-flat .012's on it... I don't think you're gonna be able to say that my choice of .009s (mainly because I think the balance is superior on floyd style trems, and because I've been doing a lot of 8 finger nonsense) makes me a less capable player than you, or that my tone is automatically weaker than yours. Your tone would have to be a hell of a lot better than a hell of a lot of amazing players (Vai, Satch, Petrucci, I can make the list long if you want) and I don't think you're going to be able to prove that's the case.

Actually, I think the Allman Brothers Band wrote it back in 1994, I believe it's on the "Where it All Begins" album. The Mule has covered it on several occasions including that "Live...With a Little Help From Our Friends" album. Gov't Mule was formed after this album was released (Warren Haynes and Allen Woody (RIP) broke away from the ABB). None the less, a great song.

FWIW during all those years I spent with Yngwie I did not manage to absorb what "gauge" he uses. I did absorb what he thought was relevant though -- whatever he uses (008? 007? 001? sounds like a bunch of secret agents to me) he claims it is a good compromise between bend range and.. ehm.. whatever drawback there is to having thin strings, can't remember now. Gee. They rust, or break or something?? :) I'm quite sure he barked the gauges to a new tech on many occasions within my earshot, but I suppose it just didn't sink into my testosterone-soaked brain. I humbly offer this information in the hope that no one will persist in the erroneous belief that all we _old_ shred farts did in those days was to sit around and talk about string gauges. :)

This all sounds like mumbo-jumbo to me. The pick is that plastic thingy right?? How heavy could it be?! Not more than a can of beer or a bag of potato chips, surely??

    :)

I agree and I disagree. I agree a lot of guitarists are cock sure. I disagree that a desire to impress people won't get anybody anywhere (although where "where" is depends. (Maybe it depends on what "is" is))

I guess it all depends. <shrug> I mean, if you're unsure and only play for (with) yourself, where does that get you? I think it boils down to the same age-old question I seem to ponder every time I have had too much caffeine and am posting to this list; is music communication or expression? (ie, should the view of the process be centered on the recipient or the sender of the message?) To me you have to to look at all three -- the sender, the message and its delivery system, and the recipient(s). I've seen a lot of successful musicians (defining success as: being able to reach and impress a feeling on a lot more people than are in their immediate houshold) that were motivated by: a desire to prove themselves, a desire for attention, sexual power, money -- all those things that have nothing to do with pure music. Even Bach wrote for glory and money!! He had lots of kids, too. :)

Shred or no shred: I know for sure that a lot of people get a very deep satisfaction from watching / hearing someone playing difficult things (or what they BELIEVE are difficult things).. and that some don't...

[eckie] > Yeah, if you've been playing for only one year, I'm just going to sell > all my gear, give up and become a keyboard player! Bwahahahaha!

Ahh. Really?? Another soul ensnared? May the Force be with you!

To me, keyboards "is" the superior instrument because of the lack of limitations -- you can easily play things that would be very difficult to execute on guitar. Then again, guitar is the more interesting instrument because of the limitations -- the limitations are what define an instrument! Keyboards are protean, can sound like anything, you can play almost anything. That is nice, but a bit boring. When I'm wearing my dusty, old keyboard player hat I find myself again and again ttrying to impose artificial limitations on the "instrument" to make it more interesting..

Jens ==== by that logic: ought to take up the kazoo
