Well I see bands like AIC, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam as really being an obvious
progression from the 70s style hard rock. Of course they all have their own unique
sounds and influences, but its still your same thing basically in terms of what they
    are doing.
The thing was, when Nirvana came out, is you had all these guitar players, running
round dressed in woman's clothing, playing a million notes a second, singing like
the Fat Lady about red dragons and chicks and stuff (which of course we all love here)
On the other hand you had all these ultra-depressing, suicide bands with this terribly thin,
woosey sound and lots of awful keyboard beeps and stuff, also all dressed up like woman.
Then Nirvana comes along, and its just a guy in a jersey, singing like a man, not
pretending to be God and instead of marrying some super model he marries Courtney
Love. And at the same time the music was really heavy and rocking, without getting
into the ridiculous levels of death metal or anything. So people could relate to all this,
and that's why they bought Nirvana's CDs and Nirvana became really popular. You see,
its so simple it makes me wonder why I didn't think of doing it first.

Andy misinterpreted my comment about Vai:
    ><<Hey, guess what! I think Steve Vai might have released "Passion and
    <snip>
    >Steve doesn't release cd's to gain money or become a "Guitar God" ...

I think the sarcasm in what I posted was missed here. I in no way doubt
Vai's integrity as a musician (how could I possibly?!?!?!?!), and I know he
releases music "for the right reasons." In fact, I wake up every day and
am thankful for those reasons (with Vai, DT, and all of the other
underappreciated musicians I'm crazy about). Steve has my utmost respect
and admiration always. What I meant by what I said was that ANYONE who
signs a deal with a record company and releases an album usually has some
hope of cashing in on it (how high or low that hope falls as priority
varies; I know with Vai, it's probably the last thing he thinks about).
The "guitar god" part of the comment was also kind of a joke, in reference
to Kurt's reference to Vai as a "guitar god." In fact, I hate that term to
    begin with.

    >He releases cd's because there's that market of his fans who foam at the
mouth to >hear his playing, (I choke on the foam it get's so bad.)

As do I, my friend. Believe that.

By the way, to anyone who hasn't downloaded "Boston Rain Melody" from
either Vai.com or Napster yet: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?! Check
out this tune, it's already one of my favorite Vai songs! November 7th
    will be a good day.

    Peace,
    Brian

Someone already beat me to saying it. Michael Lee Firkins is one of the
first guys to really nail this sound. Get is FIRST album. The rest are all
a major disappointment, IMO. Jason Becker did a lot of this on Lil Ain't
Enough (David Lee Roth) and on Perspectives... though a lot of the playing
on this album is actually... Michael Lee Firkins.

The techniques are not that complicated... they require a very solid
legato ability, and a good sense of timing... but that's it. The thing is,
I imagine this would be an extremely difficult thing to explain in text.
Michael has an instructional video out that covers the techniques in extreme
depth. There's a lot of great licks on the video. That may be the best way
to learn it. I don't know of anyone who does it better than he does (though
Jeff Beck sometimes does similar effects, and always has a great sound at
    it!)

    - Chris

BTW: Cowgod: Your prototype 7 string almost certainly has a standard 7
string Edge trem. I have a prototype UV as well, and that's what it has. I
think it was a few years after the release of these instruments that the Lo
Pro was developed, and the Lo TRS didn't happen until Ibanez moved their
guitar building to Korea, I think, which was probably like 96 or so.

<< And btw, Nirvana did not get popular after dude's death. They were
pretty big at the time too. It was only the commercial money hungry pigs
that later turned his death into a cash machine. >>

Nirvana was big after "Smells Like Teen Spirit" started it's regular airplay,
but the band absolutely exploded once Cobain played with his at home
dentistry set. Jimi Hendrix wasn't as big as he is now until he had died as
    well.

<<quick question. how do i know which trem i have? >>

Chances are, you have a Lo-Pro Edge. It's basically just the placement of the
fine tuners. On the Edge's, they are pointed more towards the bottom of the
guitar. On Lo-Pro's, they are face side up. Since Ibanez used mainly Lo-Pro's
on all the UV's and early RG's, you probably have a Lo-Pro. However, they did
do a small run of Edge loaded guitars.

<<on a side note, anyone know where i can get ibanez 7-string locking nuts?>>

    http://members.home.net/rlharris1/IBANEZRULES/index.htm

This is Rich Harris. He's an Ibanez Broker/Seller/Trader. He'll answer your
e-mails in about 15 minutes time, and he's the absolute greatest dealer I've
ever talked to. (He looks great in stalkings as well...but that's another
story.). Actually, ask him about your guitar, he'll give you exact production
dates, colors, any differences, and probably even the serial number. :-)

Also, if your looking for any UV7MC's, (Those famous swirl guitars that Vai
used back in the day), he's got quite a few for sale. Check it out. LOVELY
galleries and his PRIVATE stash of JS guitars will make you ill. (Ever meet
    anyone with 14 rare JS's?).

<<I'm interested in this damn cool song of his WHILE WE CRY,
and don't have the time to find the exact chords (sounds like typical
    SRV chords) although I know it's E H A E ... >>

HOLY FUCK! Someone discovered a new chord!

I recently heard a rumor that Phish (one of my favorite bands) has broken up indefinately because they believed they were "losing their original fan-base". I guess they felt like they were becoming too main stream or somethin....kinda funny if you ask me....A band that doesnt want loads of exposure....Besides, as soon as I saw them on the cover of TV Guide, i knew somethin Phishy was up.... :) Just wanna see if there is any merit to any of this..

Hey everyone - this is my semi-annual post... ;)

As part of my recent CD collection liquidation, I'm giving away the following 2 CD's free:

    * Stratovarius - Visions of Europe (2CD set) * Fates Warning - Still Life (2CD set)

Here's the catch - neither have jewel cases. However, both CD sets are in fine condition (little to no scratches, both play all tracks just fine), and DO include liner notes. See, I keep my CD's in Case Logic cases, and often misplace the original jewel cases.

So, the first person to e-mail me their name & mailing address gets both discs (sorry, I won't separate them). This is limited to mailing addresses within the continental 48 United States only, as I am paying for shipping.

    READY, SET....

    GO! :)

    Thanks, David Dixon dixon@iisweb.com
