OK, I'll agree about Dave Grohl's drumming, and the fact that Kurt Cobain had a very intense voice that did carry a lot of emotion, but Alice in Chains, a Led Zep band? They may have had some similarities in the way that they did both hard rock/heavy metal albums and acoustic albums, and that they both used a good number of odd time signatures, but that's about it. The styles of music, singing, and the lyrics are all totally different...

Maybe you saw Michael Lee Firkins? That guy is nuts!

At first I enjoyed very much 2 albums of him, he has VERY original sound and technique, including the slide thingy. But then I heard he DOESN'T use slide! And I was just shocked, and I still cannot imagine HOW he can play his stuff like that.

So you say it's done with whammy bar??? I don't see how you can control the whammy that much, it's impossible. :(

And btw, Nirvana did not get popular after dude's death. They were pretty big at the time too. It was only the commercial money hungry pigs that later turned his death into a cash machine.

I know that was said/typed in good fun, but I only become an uptight prog snob with no sense of humor when someone posts something completely idiotic. Stupidity is the only thing in this world I don't find humor in. I know at least two people on this list who know me in person and can attest to that. I'm a fungi!

And hey, would I be defending a band like Nirvana if I were a TRUE prog snob? ;) ;)

I think my biggest problem with listening to other guitarist play with they're wanks...er, whammies, is the intonation. It's fairly easy to slip just below or above the correct pitch, and that little bit will sound so disgusting if you do. (I'm a big stickler for being in key and playing in tune). I actually use this a lot, since I can't always grab a slide at the moment. I think a good practice peice would be something like the solo in "Pull Me Under", the first few measures of the solo, (I know, these are NOT played with a slide). Try staying on the first note of the solo, and use your whammy bar to do all the bends and slides, while fretting that same note. Obviously, depending on your guitar, you may or may not be able to get up or even low with the bar. If your playing a Strat, have fun tuning afterwards. On any decent Floyd Rose guitar, (an Ibanez Lo-TRS is NOT a decent trem. Original Edge, or a Lo-Pro Edge would be considered decent trems.). And even then, you have to have a lot of space under the bridge to pull up. (Join me and buy a JEM). Oh...and listen to plenty of Vai. :-)

<<Hey, guess what! I think Steve Vai might have released "Passion and Warfare" with the intent of making some money (aside from the obvious intent of furthering his "guitar god" status with a revolutionary instrumental album).>>

Steve doesn't release cd's to gain money or become a "Guitar God", (If he wanted more $, he would have stayed with David Lee Roth and/or Whitesnake when he was offered full time positions in the bands). He releases cd's because there's that market of his fans who foam at the mouth to hear his playing, (I choke on the foam it get's so bad.) I've never seen one time where Steve was trying to make himself any better than any guitarist. As a matter of fact, back when P&W was released, he did one last interview until his next cd came out, because he was sick of seeing himself on every guitar mag. on every streetcorner. Go ahead, check it out yourself, Guitar World probably late 91', the interview is called, 'Steve Vai-The Last Interview?'

    Andy-

"Yeah, I'd say your my biggest fan I've met so far, just don't shoot me, K?" Steve Vai 11-23-99

Now Playing- Faith No More "The Real Thing" Ron Thal-"Freak"

    BTW-Faith No More fucking rules.

hehe no, thats why i had to add in the stuff about no sense of humor and stuff :) come on, youre making this too much work for me. why cant you hate simple-minded music like a good little prog snob? :) i wasnt really referring to you specifically with that statement anyway, just using your post as a representative sample of the aggressive, challenging attitude i was referring to. :) hehe no offense intended, it just seemed to me like you were getting too worked up over a meaningless little sig. moo.

quick question. how do i know which trem i have? i have it blocked because i don't have locking nuts, so i can't really judge based on whether or not it sucks :) what are the defining characteristics, visually, of the different ibanez tremolos? i can't tell by model number either because i have a '91 custom prototype, its a 7-string based on the S-series (apparently they have now started mass-producing 7-strings based on the S-series, but im not sure that they are direct descendants of my guitar, and i dont imagine the tremolo is necessarily the same).

on a side note, anyone know where i can get ibanez 7-string locking nuts? moo.
