Hi all
ELECTRIC WIZARD - Dopethrone (Rise Above Records
CDRISE27)
Instead of me reviewing this album, I've stolen the
review from the good folks at Roadburn (http://www.xs4all.nl/~roadburn/).
Their review tells
you all you need to know about this megalithic masterpiece. Here goes...
"How do you review one of the best records you've ever heard? That is the
challenge that "Dopethrone" has presented me with. It is so hard to tell
whether an album sounds good in the short term, or whether it will stand the
test of time. Luckily, you can look back to the last Electric Wizard
full-length "Come My Fanatics..." and see how that has lasted. Quite nicely,
it turns out. Four years have not diminished its potency or impact.
"Dopethrone" maintains all the good things from "Fanatics..." and then makes
it all... well, better. There is just MORE Electric Wizard-ness packed in.
Enough to convince me that "Dopethrone" is an all-time classic.
"What is Electric Wizard-ness? It is the primal opposition of different
elements: super-saturated distortion next to drugged-out ambient spaces;
minimal bpm's pitted against edge-of-sanity vocals; "essence of Iommi" riffs
versus subharmonic drone. It is also a feeling, an atmosphere of sociopathic
danger and bleak despair fused with the comforting warmth of fuzz. It's the
uncertainty of taking heavy drugs and the euphoria of a good trip. It is
density and space. Darkness and light. Basic, visceral elements translated
into music.
"In truth, that is exactly what this record is. The band went into the
studio with rough outlines of songs, but left the final product up to
spontaneous creation. And created the complex simplicity of "Dopethrone". Or
is it simply complex?
"One of the interesting things about "Dopethrone" is that it nullifies all
the normal criteria for judging records. Does it have great songs?
Irrelevant. The album is great. Does it have excellent musicianship? Not
applicable. The instruments work together as an organic whole. Is it
well-produced? Again, not applicable. The sound is a function of the
playing. The atmosphere simultaneously creates and is created by the music.
This is one seamless unit. This is the dopethrone. Kneel before your liege
lord... and inhale deeply."
stay safe and happy listening

Okay you guys are punks....damn you! Ha!
You know what I did last night? Yeah, keep the dirty comments to yourselves... :)
I was out and about Berlin before catching a movie, and I'm chilling in a kickass bookstore
looking for a new read (got Iain Banks, 'Complicity') great so far. Anyway, I settle on a book.
Friends are still looking around for some novels, so I drop downstairs to flip through a couple
of discs. In the back of my mind I hear this whispering -- marauders from the jam saying, "Look
for the Symphony X album V...look for it, it may be there, probably won't but it might." And look
what I find. It's actually there -- great, another strain on my eurocard. So I hit the que to check
out. I'm inspecting the cover art, the inside jacket and I remember about some kind of skip in the
10th track so I pick up the disc to glare at it in the light and I can clearly see a blurred band of
what looks like imperfections ; from what I can gather look to be the 10th track maybe? Hmph, it's
out of the que and back to the rack to see if there is possibly another disc...flipping through the random
S section and what do I stumble upon? Ahhhh damn it, it's the Spock's Beard V album and it's the limited
edition too....shit, now I have to buy this one too. It was a struggle between total enjoyment today and knowing
that my little cash supply at the bank is slowly dwindling until next pay day. So what did I do jammers? Ye have
little faith, of course I bought them and here I sit e-mailing great vibes while blasting the Symp. X album.
Haven't put on Spock's yet but I know it'll be good -- you guys know your stuff.
Have a kickass Sunday,
andy

Time for the thrice-annual post! Assuming the cat will get off the
keyboard and let me type.
How convenient that DT scheduled their final show of the tour on the night
before I flew back to the US after two weeks of running around the UK.
Does my timing kick ass or what?
I haven't seen any of the reviews for this show yet, being that I just
resubbed (lost my old email addy and neglected to resub), so pardon any
redundancies that everyone else has already talked about.
I met up with Charlie Farrell and Graham Borland there (my new best buds --
Charlie scored me a ticket and Graham swapped it for his extra front row
seat) along with a couple of other ytsejammers whose names I apologize for
not remembering off the top of my head. The Apollo was a little late in
opening and security was really anal about people standing up at the stage
instead of in their proper seats after Porcupine Tree (which was a very
good band -- sorta like Phish on something speedier than pot), but that
didn't last past the first song. I figured that if people paid to get
seats in the first ten rows and they weren't gonna stand up, it was too
fucking bad if they couldn't see. :)
I admit I haven't been -quite- as fond of the later material (I'm an
old-sk00l girl to the bone, no apologies), but seeing them live always
reminds me why I LOVE THIS FUCKING BAND. I don't think I've been to 20
shows in my life, and DT now accounts for seven of them -- and this show
was the second best of the seven. Why? Because they were having a really
good time on stage ("yay! it's over! no more touring!") and it showed,
and as a direct result, *I* had a great time.
Random moments/visuals:
- "I don't need your MERCY FUCK to get me through the day!" I'm going to
be randomly shouting this for the next two weeks. That just totally made my
night. I remarked to James later that there were probably only five people
in the audience who knew where the hell that came from. Unpredictability
is good.
- bad case of hero worship like I haven't seen up close in ages. The
eighteen year old kids right next to us were practically groping Petrucci
every time he came over (like just about everyone else in the front -- the
man must have no sense of personal space), and they stampeded to get a
drumstick that hit the stage about five feet in front of us. That's okay,
I didn't need that foot anyway. Whole crowd of crazy Greeks up front and
center waving their flag all night. There was an older blond guy after the
show who was all over them as well. Stalker in the making right there. hehe
- lots of crew antics -- drum tech in Kiss makeup, guitar tech in a Bart
Simpson mask, I dunno who the clown was, fooling around with JP's pedal
during a solo. Silly stuff.
- Between the height of the stage and the placement of the cameras, there
were an awful lot of crotch shots. Cool! :D
- JP's duet thingamabobber with Jordan kicks more ass every time I see it.
- Jordan's solo: holy fast fingers, Batman.
- During another JP solo, he was either making extensive use of a pedal or
he was doing some half-assed Irish dance. Looked really funny from my
angle, because we couldn't see the pedal -- all we saw was his leg bobbing.
- United Airlines sucks. Friends who save your ass at 5am after your
flight gets fouled up rule. :)
Mini rant: After the show, I was minded how *rude* fans can be. The hero
worship thing gets in the way of plain common sense. JM had been out
signing stuff for a little while, went back inside the stage door for half
an hour or so, and when he came back out, he headed right for the bus.
What did about ten people do? Chase after him. Sheesh. Both Jordan and
Mike were hauling luggage when they made an appearance and obviously needed
to get situated before coming back out to greet fans, but people mobbed
them anyway.
Granted, I've met them before, so it's not that big of a deal to me if they
don't even have time to say hi, let alone stop and chat with everyone for
an hour. Yeah, we shivered outside for almost two hours and got shooed
away by security a few times (even though nobody was misbehaving), and
hell, I had to leave for an overseas flight in about five hours at that
point in time. But some of the people out there were acting like it was
DT's farewell tour and there'd never been another opportunity to meet them
again.
Bah, I say.
Flames will be jammed up your ass after I feed you a quart of beans. :D

Anyone ever notice that on some songs off of Symphony Xs' Divine wings, sound =
like MSG? Macaulay Shenkar Group? The chorus, and some verses sound like =

Of course I only made the reply that I did because there's always someone
who is insulted by EVERYTHING :)
And yes... I agree true quality-wise, I used to have a thumpy car (before
someone hit my front end which just ripped my subwoofers to shreds upon
impact) and I was always much happier with the sounds I got from obscure
techno bands than mainstream rap/r&b. But it sure is fun to have your teeth
rattle.

If there is a "Frys Electronics" store in your area I'd check there. The
ones in Dallas/Ft Worth have EVERYTHING. Everything form conductors to
motherboards to soldering irons to multitesters to oscilloscopes to software
to hardware to CDs to CD cases to TVs to keyboards to guitars to LAN
equipment etc etc get the picture? :)

Has anyone burned a CD-R of "ACOS" ? I'm having trouble because the file is
so big.(I've got 64 Meg RAM). I'm wondering if anyone has been successful.

FWIW I think Napster should be shut down. (Perhaps ranted here before, don't remember)
Were I a bit less thoughtful I could state: "Those arrogant thieves of intellectual property should realize they are stealing the bread out of the mouths of musicians". But I think the issue is complex and requires a nuanced approach. All I know is that the "Napster way" is not a good one. ("Napster way" defined in my mind as: third party uses public database of local copies of infringing material -- essentially to attract site hits.) I for one hope the US courts will speak clearly in favor of copyright. I say this not as some 19-year old copyleft freak who probably never even heard of Stallman, but as a wizened veteran of this thing called "the music industry", and I feel I have a fairly accurate picture of the nature of that beast (and two cauliflower ears to prove it, figuratively speaking), of the history of copyright law, and of music comsumers in general. And I am a bit worried.
Especially people who are interested in "narrower" music should be concerned about the threat of erosion of musical intellectual property rights.
I think I typed a bunch of anti-napster rhetoric before (summarised from posts to the SX list) at http://www.panix.com/~jens/parse.cgi/napster.par -- not that anyone cares probably. Sigh. (Hey, the economy is booming! Money is way overrated in this glorious economy. Here's the bag of money, here's the shovel, there's the furnace. Get to work!! We need those eyeballs on our site! And let's get William Shatner to do some ads with jokes about Mozart dying in poverty while we're at it.)
> Maybe the RIAA has a legitimate bitch. I can't see the average "Pink" fan
> giving a fuck about sound quality... And it's all about money, right?
Yes. All about money. That is essentially correct.
By the way, on a more positive note, "V" just got a *10* review in Rock Hard!! :)
(That's 10 out of 10...)
