I just noticed this in the indie + alternative new sections of this
free music paper we get round here.
They are talking about the release of the new Radiohead album
Kid A-

"As would be expected, tracks from the album have been floating around on
the Napsters of the world for a while now- however somebody sneaky (I'd
like to think it has something to do with Radiohead themselves, but you never
know) has been doing their darnedest to confuse the dickens out of unsuspecting
fans. For example, many out there unwittingly downloading 'Idioteque' have
ended up with what in actuality is a Dream Theater (don't ask- and yes, obviously
they are American 'cos they can't spell) instrumental, and version floating about of
the 'hidden track' off Kid A are actually cut up version of Styx (remember Eric
Cartman's Come Sail Away?) attenot at creating the absolutely worst song ever,
Mr Roboto.'

By the way, it looks like us prog fans who got into OK Computer for its Pink
Floydishness, lengthy progressive/alternative song Paranoid Android, the rocking
Electioneering and Johnny Greenwood's awsome, often Frippian, style guitaring,
will be disappointed with their new album. I won't comment tho, having not heard
it.

Yeah, I got Kid A on the 3rd, and I've listened to it quite a few times.
It's very, _VERY_ different. By no means bad, but it's quite out there at
times.
Personally, I like The Bends and OK Computer more.

But who wants to play poorly designed crap. I've been reading up on all
these next-gen systems. Dreamcast is the way to go right now. $300 for a
PS2? Don't think so, even the game developers are lampooning how poorly PS2
is designed, making it hard to make games. Wait for a Nintendo GameCube(it
won't play DVDs but so what, I have a DVD player..or two).

I'm betting(not sure on this one) that there is a loss of quality as well
when playing movies. It is designed to play games first then movies second.
And who wants a DVD player without a remote control?

So with all the DTS talk I was wondering if the SFAM DVD will include a DTS
track.

And as for the Apex and the Raite "cheap" DVD players, you get what you pay
for in this situation. A friend bought one and the LCD screen broke after 2
weeks, and said the quality is like a VHS tape.
But if you want to play CD-Rs and MP3's it is a decent CD player.

Would it have been "Now That's What I Call Music 9" by any chance?

Gulp!...time to get out my wooly cardigan and comfy slippers I think :)

BTW, you or anybody here (Charlie F.!) going to Hammersmith in October?

I will be at the Glasgow and London shows. My seat for the London show is
in the front row, and my position for the Glasgow show is right in the
middle of the moshpit.

Of course not... Not only does it penalize most of us without a DTS player but it will also seriously reduce the number of discs sold.

I can't even mention the huge amount of space needed for the DTS data to fit on the disc which would mean less space to put bonus tracks and extra stuff on the DVD. For example, the "Saving Private Ryan" DTS version doesn't have the documentary that is included with the regular version.

I rest my case.

Sorry, but that's totally bogus. As someone who is involved in the game development community, the big worry right now is whether, between the PS2 and the X-Box, PC-based gaming will survive. (Answer: of course it will) -- The only people "lampooning" the PS2 are lackeys or fans of Sega and Nintendo. Everyone else is waiting eagerly.

You'd be surprised. First off, he IS right - game developers ARE criticizing the PS2 design. Second, it's not just "lackeys or fans of Sega and Nintendo" that are saying that PS2 sucks. Out of about 30 people in my school who played it, 27 or 28 said that it was a total piece of crap, most of which had been preaching "PLAYSTATION 2 WILL BE THE BEST EVER!!!" beforehand.
