..and nine other fine progressive/power metal bands, I'll just send out
a reminder that tickets for Progpower USA 2.0 in Atlanta went on sale to
the general public on August 1st via Ticketmaster.
Ten bands, two nights, and there will be CD dealers galore. :)
Friday Nov. 9th:
Balance of Power
Nightingale (i.e., Dan Swano; he will do at least one Edge of Sanity
track)
Angel Dust
ARK
Symphony X
Sat. November 10th:
Superior
Spiral Architect
Vanden Plas
Evergrey
Kamelot
All bands get full sets (c. one hour) and the headliners get more time.
I've been through Earthlink Live during the walk-through when it was
booked -- this is a great venue, with not a bad seat in the house.
There's an open floor area in front of the stage and permanent seats in
a half-amphitheater "bowl" shape around it. With state of the art
lights and sound; it'll be great for bands and fans.
I can't wait; it's gonna be a November to remember!

I think it's quite unfair to say that musicians like Roine, Mike & Neal try to just copy old prog. I for one LOVE TransAtlantic and can't wait for the new one. I got into Flower Kings by being amazed by Roine in TransAtlantic, and FK opened a whole new dimension in music to me. I dunno, ... I'm an old Yes, Tull etc fan and I still find TransAtlantic revelationious. :)
> I have only heard Spock's Beard, and was not all that impressed. > They were funny on stage, but the music didn't seem new > and inspired.
Yay. :) No comment

Hey Scott and all,
This cd is fully cool. I listened to the clips and ordered the cd (which showed up in only a couple of days) and have listened to it a number of times. Scott's descriptions are accurate - there's a lot of things mixed in here, and it's a really cool blend. Very listenable. It's already in heavy rotation in my car. There is a strong Rush influence, but a lot of other things as well, yet still fairly unique, afaik. At least, I've never heard anything else exactly like it.
And the production and packaging are great.
So Scott, I haven't read all the liner notes yet, but how did you do the drums? They sound really nice (as does everything for that matter) but I can't tell if they're programmed or not. If they are a drum machine, you did an EXCELLENT job. It's very hard to tell. And if they are real, they're great, too. ;-) I have a real interest in this, because I'm working on my own project. I have Roland V-drums, and I'm really happy with the sound, but I'm going to have a real drummer come in and play them, I think, to get a better feel. And some better fills ;-)
And what kind of keyboards did you use?
I have a lot more questions and comments, but not enough time at the moment to keep rambling.
Everybody should check this out. I can't wait to really crank it up loud at home.
Paul

He has two good solo cds you can download on www.emusic.com (that's a legal download site. $14.95/month for as much as you want)
> Scheduled up next: Ring of Fire (Mark Boals, George Bellas, Vitalij > Kuprij, Philip Bynoe and Virgil Donati) - "The Oracle"
Hey that's just like Derek and Planet X. Boals solo cd was called Ring of Fire and now the band is called Ring of Fire......

This band Ring of Fire that has been popping up on the jam recently has caught my attention, and for this reason: Mark Boals. Now, the only thing that i'm familiar with concerning Mark is his work with Yngwie, both on the '86 album "Trilogy", as well as the two most recent ones, "Alchemy" (which is fantastic; very dark & heavy) and "War To End All Wars", which i wasn't particularly impressed with, but a lot of that has to do with the mixing & production of the album as much as it has to do with the songwriting. anyway, back on track. what kind of music does this band RoF play? are they just straight forward rock & roll, or are they a little bit more than that. the simple mention of virgil donati being involved would lead me to believe the second assumption. however, i would like to know a bit more about them, particularly what Boals's contribution ammounts to. i love the stuff he did with Malmsteen, but his voice gives the appearance that it's on the wane as the years have gone by. kinda' the way Steve Walsh's seems to be going. not as strong, steady, or full as it used to be. curious about any feedback any of you feel like giving. thanks.

Eric G, yeah, well, though I plead innocent to being the one who attempted to pass violent hostile legislature through our recalcitrant congressional leaders, I also do hereby denote myself an avid enemy of cellphones (of course that's a personal choice and vendetta, but they do just irk my triggerless finger to the left a bit).
I do hate to bring some sad and sarcastic comments to the board here and now and there after, but, alas, if it does touch the older days of yore, then so be it! Let us rejoice in our new or old-found faith is facitiousness and the requisite banter that follows, in addition to many comments on progressive music, DT (of course) and, my VIRTUALITY CD, not necessarilly in that order...
Anyhow, feel free to check out the song samples at your leisure and buy a copy for your grandmother or her parrot!

First, on the Queensryche thing, I loved Rage for Order and Mindcrime, but I must say Empire is still my favorite. It just has a sense of feel and balance that I don't find very often. I liked Promised Land all the way through, but not quite as much as Empire and RfO ...
Here I will baffle you all though. I think Mindcrime and Promised Land are on a similar level. If I had to put one over the other, I think I'd put Mindcrime, but they are very close IMO, and both quite good.
I'll baffle you again. When I first heard HITNF, I didn't know what to think of it. It was liek they had sold out, first of all, and second, like they had sold out to the wrong audience. As I listened to it more, though, I liked it more and more. Now, I don't think it ius as good as the other 4 mentioned here, but still a worthwhile listen.
I heard some clips of Q2k, and judging from what little I heard, it sucked really bad, so I'm not really interested. I'm a little curious about "The Warning" though. I have heard that it was good heavy metal, but not progressive like their later stuff. That's why I haven't gone out of my way to try to hear it yet.
>>> I see this as being no worse than Neil Peart's setup with the electronic kit and the acoustic kit for certain songs. <<<
You mean in the late 80s, where he had his acoustic drums and also the electronic pads? I think that sounded really cool.
>>> 4) How long until chocolate is deemed a controlled substance and banned by our lovely reactionary White house personnel? ... <<<
Whaa...? I know you were being sarcastic, but I still do not understand why.
>>> 5) Ambassador Nelson (which nation?) thanks for your response regarding my personal comments. It's difficult as a self-financed, independent musician to get publicity, but one must throw out their inhibitions somewhat to move the steel wheels of the PR machine. But, yes, for years I was under the impression trance and progressive music (rock, metal, whichever) would converge nicely. I would appreciate opinions on the sound clips. I know... the Rush sounding comments are at my doorstep! Unintentional! <<<
Ambassador Nelaskon (pronounced NAY-lu-skahn) of the planet Cyaron. Now you see how dorky I really am (j/k). I'm in the process of writing a novel, and in that story a lot of weird stuff is happening where I am pulled to another planet in the Andromeda Galaxy, and we have to try to fight a war and stuff ... Nelaskon is my Cyaron name.
I haven't heard all the clips yet, and as soon as I get enough online time to get them all I'll let you know what I think of each one, and where I am coming from when I hear it. I *CAN* say that, from what I've heard, that Infinite clip was absolutely awe-inspiring. The clips do sound like the tracks don't hold up the energy though, and that would be sad if they don't. But I'd have to hear it all first :)
Anyway, for years I have known what I **wanted** to hear, and I NEVER have yet. I will do my best to create the sound when I have the ability. Your stuff is starting to move in that direction.
