I'd like to post this from Spock's Beard newsletter.
A fucking disgrace is what it is!

Magic Bag in Detroit rips off Spock's Beard for $1,000.00

Here is a note from Neal Morse:

The Magic Bag in Detroit, ripped Spock's Beard off for
$1,000.00. We had a guarantee of $1500.00 and at the
end of the night they gave us $500.00 and said "take
          it or leave it!".

We had a full house in there (over 160) on a Tuesday
and they just decided not to pay us....they gave
several excuses like they originally booked us on a
Sunday so the pay had changed...then they said Prog
fans don't drink enough so they couldn't afford to
pay us more....and we didn't have a signed contract.
So they gave 10 guys on the road (5 band and 5 crew)
$500.00 and said "see ya"! They have not made any
          effort to set things right.

SO PLEASE BOYCOTT THE MAGIC BAG!!

          Here's their info:

          http://www.themagicbag.com/
          810-544-1991

It's a really rotten thing that they did (to a band
that's losing lots of money on the road as it is!)
and I'm asking you to BOYCOTT THE MAGIC BAG to send a
message that club owners can't treat bands like dirt.

          Thanks,

          Neal

Hello! To the guy who wanted to know about Devin Townsend's music, I do not
consider it prog. I consider it sort of atmospheric and experimental metal,
but not prog. Much of his music has a lot of sounds on top of each other,
pretty much like a sound orgy. The melodies are excellent (most of the
songs are quite melodic). I really don't know what else to say about it...

Hey, and thanks a lot for absolutely no feedback on my Leonardo post. Are
you people dead or something? Or are your posts being rejected by the
filters? Come on, you can do better than that...

    I quote:

"Well, don't kill yourself trying to be too PC. I don't like the way the majority of them sound either. Yes, there are exceptions, but in general it's just annoying to me. That "Survivor" song from Destiny's Child is among the most annoying piles of crap I've ever heard.

Anyway, white people do that same kind of crap, but if we think real, it's like this. I know several black people who kick ass. But I do not like the R&B / HipHop stuff one bit. A majority of their 'musicians" and "singers" are black. That's not our fault; so I hope you don't apologize too much for it. :)"

I vehemently disagree with this statement, but the worst of it is it only reflects poorly upon the messenger. Of course, this being a DT/Progressive discussion group/message board/digest, we ourselves are the victims of enough misinformed ignorami and surely many stereotypes about prog exist and are even perpetuated by people. Some are true, some aren't but the point is sometimes NOT to add fuel to the proverbial fire.

But, back to the comments I read above, and have been reading variously throughout the Ytsejam over the last week (i've been in Baltimore for the last 4 days for Hour, I mean Powermad, so...). I take issue with this for a variety of reasons, but suffice to say, this is not necessarilly the forum to delve into the entire realm of viewpoints and opinions.

My view is there does seem to be enough underlying hostility in some of the comments (particularly in the one I quoted above), that is unnecessary here. I think mostly, besides just pure ignorance it is a case of people speaking about music they don't know much about, and/or don't listen to on a regular basis, if any basis, so they can and will only speak in general blanket statements and the like.

I myself listen to a wide range of music, including plenty of HipHop and R&B, and of course, the obligatory DT and FW and all their progeny, derivatives, etc... (heh heh). But, While I don't like everything, I certainly can find SOMETHING and/or some musicians/bands/artists in EVERY genre of music that are pushing the envelope and writing great music. Period. One just has to transcend close-minded preformed opinions and conjecture on music
they are NOT used to hearing.

For some good Hip/Hop & R&B, my opinion, check out: Outcast, Sade, Innocence, Earth Wind & Fire, War, Tower of Power, Digable Planets, Public Enemy, Ice T, Fu-Schnickens, James Brown, Parliament, Tony Toni Tone!, The Time, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson (required, of course), Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprosy, some Wu-Tang, Guru, Run DMC, Eric B & Rakim, Lenny Kravitz & Prince (who get lumped into R&B, but are Pop/Rock artists IMHO), Chante
Moore, Brothers Johnson, some KC, Erika Badu, Jill Scott, Brand New Heavies, etc...

The list goes on, but the point is, that style of 'over-emoting', is just ONE variant in a genre (R&B) that covers ALOT of bases, my friends. People forget that there is huge amounts of progressive approaches to music in the rhythmic and melodic structures of songs in there. Of course, once someone puts on the blinders, those damn heavy things are a bitch to take off, so...

Anyhow, THAT's my first piece of the day and though I didn't want to think THAT hard after a trip loaded with some good progressive and power metal music (and plenty of TRU metal, of course) I will be slapping on some Tori Amos and Comodores for the rest of the day, if not the week!

Anyhow, if you are feeling more adventurous, check out my shit, too.

    C'aio, brothers and sisters.

If anyone is interested in TD meets Rush, with a little FW/DT/Kitaro thrown in for good measure, and some ambient/trance leanings, well, check out my song samples and the entire CD. I know I've posted this before, but occassionally the self-promotional bug bites and the virus flows through my veins at such an alarming rate I must acquiesce and release the beast via the occassional post here. But I will always make sure to preclude it with
some posts on various psychopathic odds and ends (i.e.: previous 2 posts).

Whassup y'all? Just got back from Powermad '01, in one piece (although my spleen is discolored from non-NY pizza and my left earlobe is still smarting from some of those too true 'TRU METAL' bands... the irony is too much) and well, the turnout certainly wasn't what was expected, or even up to par from years past,
but as always (and is par for the course for MANY festival events) an entertaining time was had by all, or at least myself and our strange little contingent. A few FW and Rush shirts floating about (occupied, of course) which is always a good sign. Some good bands I heard (and recommend for those searching for
atypical prog fare): Brave, Persephone's Dream, Dysrhythmia, Steel Prophet, There-4, and of course, F5 & Scott Mosher (plugging our own projects). Just thought I would touch base quickly, and legally (don't want those Brave's fan's complaining about the ump's). Next on the PR agenda, Prog power in Atlanta, and the
    AARP meeting in Peoria...

    Hello-

I'm going to the Iced Earth/Anthrax/Judas Priest show at the Warfield in SFO next month
(15th I think? Someone else got my ticket for me, but I think that's the date). Anyone interested
in driving up from the South Bay? I'm meeting some friends who are coming from Sacramento,
so I'm driving up to the city alone. Anyone interested in getting a ride, let me know.

Btw, I picked up "Horror Show" this weekend. After two listens, I can't say I'm that fond of it,
but I'll keep spinning it with some hope....

Figured I'd check out those Tangerine Dream tourdates, but the URL the good
Ambassador sent gave me a nice little DNS error (turns out all it needed
was the "www" bit at the beginning). I went with an alternate:

    http://www.tangerinedream.com/

Interesting... (Don't worry, it isn't granny-porn or anything like that.)

    On Powermad:

    >the turnout certainly wasn't what was expected

It's always like that, due, more than anything, to a lack of advertising,
the extent of which this year seemed to be some 8.5X11 flyers on a few
telephone poles around the venue. This year, too, it was competing with
the WSOU festival in NJ, which featured all manner of big metal names:
Biohazard, Misfits, Overkill, Six Feet Under, Hatebreed, etc. The two
festivals draw different audiences in part, but, then, there's a lot of
metalfans (myself included) who enjoy most of the metallic
subgenres...mallcore aside... And, no doubt, the loss of Pain of Salvation
also hurt Powermad's attendance this year.

Personal highlights of Powermad 2K1: HELSTAR, Overlorde, Steel Prophet,
    October 31, Manilla Road, Brave

Not sure if I mentioned this here before (I did over at the MP.com
Forum), but Flower Kings and Spock's Beard will be playing within a day
of eachother in Atlanta in a little less than two weeks.

Flower Kings are playing on Friday, Aug. 31st at the Variety Playhouse.

Meanwhile, Spock's Beard are scheduled to perform Saturday evening Sept.
1st at Dragon*Con (www.dragoncon.org), which is an event in itself:
it's the largest SF/fantasy/comics/gaming/art convention in the world
and it takes place in downtown Atlanta. Pick up a one- or two-day
membership (or even a full 4-day, since Dragon*Con runs from Friday thru
the Monday holiday), take in a few panels or check out the dealers
room, hang out with all the other freaks, and then go see the shows.
:) There are several other bands performing at D*C, some of whom --
godhead, Clutch, the Cruxshadows, etc. -- are quite good....

Not a bad weekend for a prog vacation. :)

I believe he was talking about his stage presence and show not the set itself.I've had the same feeling with Iron Maiden, ive seen them 3 times though, each time the same tricks. Takes away the feeling of uniqueness for the show you've just been too.

Excellent point. Amazing and wonderful and dead on. I generally lurk and usually only read half of what goes on here (because the other half can make me nuts, at times *grin*) but I have been following this thread... and this is the best response I've seen so far. I can't even begin to count the number of bands/musicians I've fallen in love with because I'm open to listening to ANYTHING once. DT is one of those bands, though... Sure, I've come across a lot of music that I don't like, for one reason or another, but that's all part of the game of finding out what defines you as a person. If you listen to one bad R&B CD.. or one bad Country CD.. or one bad Prog CD and swear off the genre for life.. you just might just miss your "new favorite CD" right around that genre's next corner. There is so much great music out there and we all should be open to experiencing as much of it as humanly possible.
