According to the club, all of this is a mix up that has been settled and SB
has agreed to post an appology on their website.

I will be going to that show in a couple of weeks, I just heard yesterday
about Meshuggah opening for tool. Could someone tell me about meshuggah(I
know nothing about them) and a cd recommendation or two would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to recommend some bands Ive been getting into, for those of you
who are into the more extreme bands with prog influences (like Meshuggah,
strapping
young lads, cradle of filth, soilwork etc)
One of my favourites Dillinger Escape Plan, even better than Meshuggah and
a long the same lines with polyrythyms, allan holdsworth style tension.
For some really speedy, enormously complex black metal, grab some Gorguts.
These
guys are unparallelled. Think along the lines of Opeth's heavy sections
played at double
speed.
For those of you looking for something a little different check out
Discordance Axis.
Forget 3 minute radio friendly song, or 10 minute wank fest, these guys'
songs clock in
around the 40 second mark mostly and are totally brutal. great great stuff.
Finally, theres an incredible band people should check out called Refused.
Ok we're getting
out of prog territory here, but you could call these guys are progressive
punk. But disregarding
genre, this is a really strong band.

Well......not much to tell you other than I just got off of the phone with
Weiki and we had about a 2 hour conversation. Roland and Uli are not in the
band anymore. Helloween is not breaking up. The band will announce
replacements
sometime down the road. I will have an official statement from Sanctuary
Management sometime in the next couple days. So for right now I am not
revealing anymore details other than the fact Uli and Roland are not in the
band. I am also not updating the News section officially until I receive the
official statement. A few things are certain:
1. Helloween is not breaking up
2. I will stay in touch with Roland Grapow )he still is a good friend of
mine)
and I will try to keep up with Uli from time to time but I don't know him as
well. Uli is the one guy in the band I never really got to know as well as
the
others.
More to follow shortly......and more info will surely come when I interview
some bandmembers on the Helloween Marathon, or a former member (Roland) whom
I
have not heard from in 3 weeks if he decided he still wants to be on.
That's all I have to say for now. More to follow......

And while I was at it I found another interesting one before you guys start
dreaming :) :
"Posted by Tony on August 22, 2001 at 04:19:31:
Kai Hansen is by NO MEANS replacing Roland Grapow and there is not going to
be
a reunion. Any of you who think this will happen are dreaming and living in
a
different reality. Its just not going to happen. The band has several
replacements in mind......Kai is NOT one of them. And NO, Michael Kiske is
NOT
joining the band either. There is not going to be any sort of reunion, so
anyone who thinks its going to happen can dream on.

Here's an email from Neal Morse that a forum member posted to Mike
Portnoy's forum:
Hi Jim,
here's my statement re-magic bag:
Magic Bag says:
> "The Spock's Beard situation is a dead issue. We paid the band what
> they were contracted as per their booking agent. Whatever the problem
> was, it was with the band, their management and their booking agent.
> The band has apologised to us for dissing us on their web-site
> (they've pulled the diss from the site) and has promised us that they
> would post an apology on their web-site in the future."
Neal Morse says:
Well, I'm sure no one in Spock's Beard has apologized or promised the
Magic Bag that we're going to post a retraction. That I can tell you. This
proves to me that there's some problem with the truth happening here. At
any rate, I decided to pull the Magic Bag statement off the website
because I felt it was time. Enough negative stuff....on to the next
thing....who's got the time? Not because anything has changed. The fact
remains it's the agent's word verses the club. Our agent stands by what
he's said in the past. I believe the agent because a) we've done two tours
with the guy and never had a conflict like this and b) the lowest
guarantee we had on the whole tour was $800.00, and since The Bag was one
of the first to book us, and we've played there before, why would the
agent take such a low fee? It doesn't make any sense.
But, since there's certainly a gray area here, let's all drop it and move
on.
That's all. Back to music,
Neal Morse

To tie this whole Vai/Petrucci/MICHAEL.ANGELO. thing together, who was I
standing in front of in the line to get into G3? None other, than mister
Mike A. Batio himself. Nice guy. Met him on several other occaisions.
Very jaded about the way the music industry is, but very dedicated to doing
the thing that is important to him. I respect that, even though his music
is tough to listen to.
Vai is a SHOWMAN. He SHOWS OFF, because that MAKES CROWDS GO NUTS. You may
be a prog nerd. We may all be prog nerds. We may want a group of people to
stand still, wearing flowy silk shirts, doing complex things with their
instruments, without cracking a smile. You know what? That makes YOU THE
WEIRD ONE. When NORMAL PEOPLE go to concerts, they want to be entertained
differently than just spinning up a CD. They want a SHOW. If you went to
see a play on tour, in Chicago, LA and NY, would you complain that it was
the same show every time?
Vai may not do it for you, but it seems pretty goofy to get all in a huff
because he's trying to entertain people. If you didn't notice, Vai gets
pretty spectacular crowd response. I have been at DT shows with much less
response, and Vai generally doesn't even include VOCALS. I have boots of
shows where LaBrie is frustrated with lame bored crowds.
Speaking as a musician, it sucks to say this, but WHAT YOU DO on the stage
is sometimes more important than what you play. I have played instrumental
improv shows to 50 people who have gone nuts, even though they don't know
me, and don't know what I'm about to play, and I have played in front of
larger crowds who seemed uneffected even though the music was much more
solid at those gigs.
Most people don't care about your time sigs as much as they care about stick
twirls. They don't care about a synchronized run as much as they care about
something that "looks" complicated. They don't care about big chords and
polyrhythms as much as they care about being able to groove. They're not
wrong for that... they're just not musicians, and they're paying to have a
good time, not to study your technique. Vai is playing for the people who
want to enjoy the show, not for the people who want to transcribe his licks.
I think that'd be about the most intelligent thing you could do, in terms of
making a living, keeping fans, and getting new fans. There's no lack of
integrity... just a lack of anal retentive progressive butt-rock vibe.
G3: Petrucci - Most technically interesting set. Vai - Most entertaining
and energetic set (and best drummer by light years) Satriani - most MUSICAL
set.

Yeah, according to Derek, they have an agreement, Derek plays Yngwie's
tour, and yngwie plays on Dereks next solo cD..

You know, I just have to say one more thing.
I started playing guitar when I was 11. Vai is largely responsible for
that. His stage antics and all that goofy "too cool for words" kind of
stage presence in the videos really blew my mind. That, combined with the
fact that he is one of the world's premiere technical players, and an
incredibly innovative guitarist (he is able to make sounds with a guitar
that Petrucci would have to study to figure out). When I started, there was
no Dream Theater, and John Petrucci was slicing sandwiches. He's one of my
favorite players, of course, but if I had seen Dream Theater videos back
then, there's NO WAY they would have impacted me like Vai did. As such, Vai
is largely responsible for my happiness as a player... he ignited the spark,
BECAUSE he's such a bad ass, technically and visually.
You may say to yourself "I'm not 11 years old." but I challenge you to do a
little bit of research. Some people have a bit of a bloated impression of
how complex Dream Theater's music is. Steve Vai spent years playing with
Frank Zappa. The music they played is considerably more complex
harmonically and in many senses, technically than what Dream Theater plays.
Fast guitars, and fast drums etc, are only ONE function... there are so many
other dynamics to music. I could have a student playing Erotomania in under
2 years of practice, but to get someone to be capable of playing some of
that wild Zappa stuff would take a hell of a lot more. Even when it comes
to speedy shred stuff, most of what JP does is pattern based, and though
generally perfect, it comes from easier shred techniques (his alternate
picking approach is a much simpler concept than Vai's angular playing, SWING
feel, and then some. Petrucci has an extreme command over the kinesics of
playing guitar, whereas Vai has a profoundly more complete command over the
actual INSTRUMENT). Feel and style are SO much tougher than technique!
Remember, Vai comes from the early school of bad ass shredders. He has all
of the shred chops, and a bunch more... things that JP could do, but not
without a great deal of practice. They're different people. Vai has really
taken Frank's advice to "Keep a sense of humor in the music" to heart.
Petrucci is very much more into the whole "Follow in the footsteps of your
heroes" kind of thing, with all of the DiMeola and Morse in his playing etc.
Those are totally divergent approaches to guitar playing and music. I pitty
anyone who is unable to enjoy either one of them.
- Chris

It's me again. I saw Live in Tokyo again, (as I mentioned earlier, MP actually
climbs his drum kit!) and i realized that LiT is a more energetic show than
Scenes from New York. Notice how JP jumps towards the camera in Take the Time,
and his communication with the fans - waving, making faces, "trying to hear
what they're saying" and so on, the entire show. Myung is - of course - "The
Silent Man", but still this show is better than SfNY in the sense that DT does
not only perform their show, they do it to - and most importantly WITH - the
fans.
However - and let me make sure I am crystal clear on this - "Metropolis 2000:
Scenes from New York" RULES!!! (no matter how tame their stage coreography or
stage-act might be...)

I think my point was missed. This guy has seen G3 three nights in a row, and he complains only of Vai being too rehearsed and repetative from night to night. I guess because JP and Satch don't were costumes and jump around and play a "show", its okay for them to be repetative and rehearsed from night to night. I'd rather put up with Vai's repetativeness than Satch's any day.

Please tell us more about this angular playing you mentioned. I'm not familiar with this technique.

Just set up a group for the pro pick 'em game at yahoo, free for anyone with a yahoo ID.....I'm offering a roio from my still meager collection as prize, not only because that's what this list is all about, but since that's what we did last year (and the year before, come to think to it), so if you think you know futbol (as it's spelled on Galavision), and can handle picking against the spread, why don't you hop on over to fantasysports.yahoo.com, click on the Pro Pick 'em link, and join the private group entitled
Prog pickers
the Group ID you'll need to use is 1512 and the password (don't know if you'll need this) is tarkus (in all small letters)
I'll set up a college pick 'em group when they offer that, with the same prize, so keep an eye out for my e-mail regarding that.
Hope to get a few people in on this!
Partha

Jelly Jam (members as listed in previous post)
