I don't understand all the hoopla over Portnoy's overkill drumset. granted, it IS strange, and somewhat unorthodox, but he has been known to enter into the arena of overkill, overplaying and excess
time and time again! Although this 'criticism' does not at all diminish his skills and abilities, which are incredible, and he is personally, still one of my top 10 favorite drummers, for sure. I
just think that his overplaying at times detracts from DT's material. I much prefer the Neil Peart/Dave Weckl/Mark Zonder approach of sometimes 'less is more' and subtlety.
Again, so as to pre-empt a personal flame war, this is just my home-friend, humble opinion, and like i said, Mike is still one of my favorite drummers, although coming from a guy who didn't care for
SCENES FROM A MEMORY as much as most, perhaps I am off the mark? I just can't delve into Jordan's dramatic (melodramatic) style much. He is incredible, but I actually prefered the jazz-flavored,
rock-tinged playing of Derek Sherinian and Kevin Moore's abstract soundscapes and flair for the eccentric.
Ah... well, who knows, perhaps I been drinking to much imported water or something...
Anyhow, if anyone is stil interested, my new CD of AMBIENT NEO-PROGRESSIVE CYBER ROCK is available for listening, seeing and hearing (and more!) here:

when does this one come out, anyway? I got it for
review purposes, and so far, I like it better than the
first, if only because it doesn't sound like, "James
Labrie doing guest vocals on Magellan/Shadow
Gallery/Dali's Dilemma songs." (Although, who knows
what Dali's sounds like these days....)
I like the Trent Gardner song, Afterlife, best so far,
it's got a cool New Millenium-ish opening, and LaBrie
sings it as if it were an FII outtake (although that
may just be me reading too much into the intro)....
Still and all, there isn't the sense that we get to
know who KJL is as a songwriter. Even if his
cowriters' influences aren't as obvious this time, his
own musical personality doesn't fill the gaps.....

Amazingly, the media server at Lines in the Sand (http://dreamtheater.
mit.edu) has gone back up! At this very moment, Bogie is uploading the
Boston G3 show, as well as some other various goodies. Keep an eye out
for new stuff, including G3 Boston as well as Nighttown Nostalgia (a big
thank you to Lisa Marie for providing me with that boot as a favor to a
guy who had no DT boots, you rock) and some other new stuff.
