Just wanted to add few comments.
I guess the thing that really made me check them out after one jammer
suggestion, was that Vai comment about a Zappa tune that this guitarist
played, on which Vai commented that he never played it that good. :)
So with a little help of the unique Napster I got some 30 songs so far
and I must say these guys are great!!!
Have some chopping riffs, but also very cool vocal arrangements and
melodies. The guitarist is really awesome. I always hated mindless
riffing, but this guy can really pull out some good ones. Variety of
styles mixed. Go check them out.

OK, firstly the remaining Ray Alder albums.........
I'd get "Perfect Symmetry" next. It's not as as moody/trippy as APSoG and Disconnected, but it's really an excellent prog-metal album.
"Parallels" and "Inside Out" are both pretty good too, although they are more poppy and less progressive, IMO (of the two, I prefer "Parallels"... just because "Inside Out" is TOO poppy).
"No Exit" (the first disc with Ray Alder on vox) is heavier, faster, and feautures a somewhat different vocal approach (Alder sings REALLY HIGH on this one). The vox on this one aren't my cup of tea, really...... but the album does feature the awesome epic-track, The Ivory Gate of Dreams.
I'm not too familiar with the Jon Arch era discs ("Night on Brocken", "The Spectre Within", and "Awaken the Guardian"), but I can tell you that the style is like a proggier Iron Maiden. Of these three, I believe "Awaken the Guardian" is generally considered the best.
Another good bet for you would be to pick up "Chasing Time" which is a compilation disc, containing a few tracks from every album (excluding the last two).
Also, the double-live CD "Still Life" is probably one of the best live discs ever. One disc feautures the song A Pleasant Shade of Gray in it's entirety, and the second disc includes another 8 or so songs, including The Ivory Gate of Dreams (a superior version of the song, compared to the "No Exit" version, IMO).

I always thought YOUnique was Superior's "Holy Land" so to speak -- a place where they took some chances, added some non-traditional elements, and unfortunately, took heat for breaking the mold. I have to say the results were more uneven than were those of Angra, but nonetheless, that disc gets more play than the debut...

Sorry it took so long for me to get back with you on this Josh. The t-shirt I have from metal sludge is put out by a company called Anvil. It's a pre-shrunk, 100% cotton, and says "styled for women" on the tag. I went w/ a large because I've got hooters (snort, prolly shouldn't say that to a list full of guys). Anyways, the shirt fits a little big, but I know it will shrink. It's supposed to be cropped, but because I'm short, it fits me like a regular shirt (laugh). I'll be wearing it at Progpower, so if any other girls on this list want to check it out let me know.

well, I meant progressive the genre, not the adjective. And by the by, I think that last sentence might have just ended years of arguing - could it be? Anyway, Behind is all about wicked fast crazy classical metal, all that stuff. Hence progressive the genre.
My thing, typically - and I touched on this a bit in the last 'jam - is that progressive (the genre) alone won't really do much for me. progressive plus a certain essence and you have behind, perhaps. but when you take that essence(i use that word cuz I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, does it show?) and bring it to the forefront, like in younique, then you have something really special. maybe I'm talking about the skill of the artist seperated from the genre they're working in.

Yeah, that's the Dynamo video (straight transfer to DVD)... Jim Matheos and Brian Slagel both told me that they are planning a big Fates DVD package, with lots of material on it... <fingers crossed>

carlos, thanks for being the first to clue me in on that little nugget 'o info. i think apsog & disconnected are great, and am not what you would call the most avid fan of iron maiden-sounding stuff. a little to boring/repetitive for my tastes. just never really did anything for me. i'll probably still give some of the older fates a try, but at least now i know what i'm getting into. thanks man.

Already from some of the recent posts, it's clear that some widely varying opinions about Fates Warning are out there. Fair enough. For what it's worth, I'd echo Carlos' opinion, that the most recent two are by far and away the best. Although Kevin Moore apparently did very little more than play what Jim Matheos handed him, something about his sound still comes through in the music. Going backwards, Inside Out and Parallels have a more accessible, radio-friendly sound. I would say that people on the whole prefer Parallels, and the band themselves have admitted in interviews that they felt like, in retrospect, they were trying a bit too hard to repeat Parallels with IO, I actually prefer IO. One further back is Perfect Symmetry, which has great prog moments but IMO Alder does too much of that high squealy 80s vibrato for my taste. No Exit the same, only much worse... and everything before that can be tossed in with the rest of the standard 80s mediocre Priest/Maiden metal. Which, incidentally, is the ugly.

THE GOOD:
Now a recommendation. Pat Matheny's "BRIGHT SIZE LIFE". Finally got this CD last week, and I *cannot* believe how incredible it is. Be warned, it is *definitely* a jazz album, if you're not familiar with Matheny, but oh what an album it is. Regardless of how you regard Matheny, this album stands out because it's got Jaco on bass. (If you don't know who Jaco is... well, get this album. Or get Jaco's "Birthday Concert," particularly the first track, Soul Intro/The Chicken, which I count as the very definition of a perfect bassline.) Anyhow, if you have any taste at all for great jazz, and you have any regard at all for the guitar and/or the bass, you should own this album.

hello fellow jammers, i was at borders last night and was reading some drum magazine and there was a blurb about mark zonder. he was talking about disconnected. i thought, "when did fates put out a new album?" so i go check the cds and find disconnected. what do you think? is it similar to APSoG? i love that album, so i am thinking about getting the latest one. i dig all fates stuff too, and yes, they do have a "greatest hits" album but i cant remember what it is called either (someone posted something about it). also, i found two chroma key albums. could someone give me some feedback on these? finally, i couldnt locate symphx albums. do have to get them from magna carta or something? i WANT V really badly, all ive heard is great stuff. thanks much! i need some serious work on my cd collection obviously!

I came home last night to wash my clothes and get away from campus for a weekend (for those of you who don't pay attention to the MP.com forum, there was a fire in my dorm the other night, and it was about five doors down from my own room, so I've had to move out of my dorm, and all of my shit from clothes to my computer to my sheets smell like a mixture of wood smoke and burned plastic, but hey, nobody got hurt, so it's a small price to pay). While I was home, I decided to go out with my sister and her fiancee to the bar in my hometown. Well, I was checking out the jukebox, and Dan (the fiancee) mentions "Hey look at this, Dream Theater." Sure enough, there on one of the CDs called "Hot Rock Hits, Vol. 57" was Burning My Soul. Talk about random DT occurrences... A small-town Vermont bar has Dream Theater in its jukebox?
