The new "Theater Of Dreams" fanzine has been collecting dust for
five or six weeks now... The cover specifically mentions that it
includes the CD, so the fanzine can't be sent out without it...

There has been talk of sending out an official statement from the
fanclubs about the delay, but I haven't received anything yet...
Once I do, it'll be posted on dreamtheater.net, the newsletter
and of course the DTIFC site...

For what it's worth, Marillion's Christmas CD was delayed also...
I received mine in the mail yesterday...

The difference is that Marillion themselves are in charge of
putting together the CD's... As a result, the fans are less
likely to complain about the delay... "They must be busy
working on the new album"... Know what I mean?...

WOW! I would like to extend a big Thank You to the individual who brought these guys up. I now have a new favorite band. The only disc I have not heard so far is the newest.

Also, I would HIGHLY suggest picking up their 3rd self-titled release (or "Bull" is it?). That one is definately my fav so far. Someone said that it wasn't one to start off with, but I think it holds it's own just fine. Excellent melodies and guitar work.

    Once again, THANK YOU!

    Gotta read those liner notes...

DAFR: Joey Vera bass (on 3,4,5) & Moore This Is A Recording: Kevin Moore - Vocals, Keyboards, Bass You Go Now: Kevin Moore - Vocals, Keyboards, Bass

and I had heard some time ago from a good source that Kev does indeed have a bass guitar lying around. ;-)

But how did you know what band to search for on Napster? If someone told you the name of the band to check out, why wouldn't it be just as easy to go to that band's website and download the MP3 songs and/or samples that the artist themselves have placed there (and bands that aren't already doing this need to get with the program). Then once you hear a few tracks or whatever the artist wants to put on their website (hell, many might put the whole album up if _they choose to_) you can buy the album.

There is no way of telling what Napster's impact was on record sales (and I have spoken to many people who no longer buy ANY CDs at all because they can just download the songs and burn their own CDs). Also, I found it interesting that Napster, Inc. stated that if they started charging a measly $4.95 for their service, they expect the 50 million users they now have on the free system to drop to about 20,000 (that's a lot of cheap skates!) ;-)

Wow. Denial is a powerful thing. You made some good points (cd costs, etc) which most musicians are pissed about as well... but half of what you said can ONLY be described as pure rubbish.

    > good if you want a couple of hit songs from a band. Most people don't keep > whole albums in their library. It is also a pain to download full CDs.

You are the FIRST person I've met who used Napster and didn't go for full albums. You're ALSO the ONLY person I've ever heard complain about the inconvenience of DLing music for free, from your chair instead of going out and buying it. "Oh no, I have to go to a web page and keep track of what I'm going to steal! This sucks." Pardon me if I fail to shed any tears.

    > Anyway, I - apparently unlike anyone else on the jam, am not made of > $money$.

Well, you don't seem to SPEND your money on music, so I'd have to be left with the conclusion that you have plenty of it lying around.

    > I don't have foreign contacts, and if some band from podunk Thailand or > wherever is worried about a couple(hundred) people downloading their album > overseas, then they should release it domestically.

Should and could are different things. Do you honestly believe that there are many musicians in the world who DON'T want their music released in the US? Do you know ANYTHING about the process of recording and releasing music? Do you know anything about record contracts and distribution?

    > And don't give me the band makes money in there somewhere thing. Crap. > Total crap. I've read many times that a band makes little to nothing on CD > sales, they all make it on touring, and merchandising. Stuff the record > company doesn't control.

Total denial. You have musicians on this list who have said in numerous posts that they get paid for the cds people buy. I know a few independent artists who make half of every cd sold, after they recoup production costs. You aren't making an argument. You're putting up a wall to shield yourself from having to acknowledge that you don't care about supporting music... you only care about yourself. You wouldn't even spend money on your GF... hehehe you sound like a cheap-ass.

    > Lets try something. The way sales should be done is like this $1-$2 for > manufacturing. $5 for the record company, and $5 for the band. A CD should > be no more than $12. When I walk into Camelot or Sam Goody and see a SINGLE > CD for $17.99 or $18.99 I just laugh.

This is PURE GENIUS! Why didn't I THINK OF THIS! $5 for the label... $5 for the artist, and $1-2 for costs... awesome! I think this is going to work perfectly, with all of the not-for-profit record stores out there, and the benevolent and philanthropic distributers out there. Dude, you shouldn't have brought this idea up on a public forum... someone is BOUND to steal it and revolutionize the industry. You don't have to pay $17.99 for a cd. When you see a price like that, turn your back on the establishment that's selling it to you. Most shops pay $7-12 per cd, depending on the artist/label/availability etc. You can find any domestic release for $14 or so, and you can find most european imports for $15-17. Maybe you're just not willing to try.

    > Maybe that is why a Disc Jockey, Camelot, NRM, and HMV(I think that's what > it was) all closed near me in the past couple of years.

Actually, that's probably a result of Best Buy, who used to sell cds at low prices, until the competition was beaten down, and now they suck just as bad as everyone else.

    > In conclusion: > Napster to me was not about getting free music. It was about sticking it to > the record companies, telling them we aren't going to take it anymore. Here > let me put the lube on for them.

YEAH! STICK IT TO THE MAN! YOUR VOICE IS HEARD! YOU'RE MAKING YOUR DENT! Way to go. I'm proud of you. You're full of shit.

    > From: "Paul Tadday" <dreamryche@bigpond.com> > Subject: Jens and napster > > And I wonder how many new fans Stratovarious has due to the availability of > mp3's on Napster!! > I for one have discovered a heap of bands that I otherwise would not have > had the chance to hear.

Why can't you let the bands decide if they want their music available for free? Why do you have to take that initiative yourself, and why do you assume that you have that right, and that it's just fine and dandy? Don't get me wrong, I agree, MP3s can help bands. And I think it rules that you buy what you DL (no sarcasm) but why is that a justification for copyright violation/piracy? Isn't there any alternative? I know I remember a day when we would dl small wav files or ra clips, or even a rare MP3 or 2 from a web site, that we would use to sample a band. I know that was enough for me to buy albums. Maybe I'm wacky, but I don't think people need to DL full albums of cd quality music to decide whether or not they want to support a band that they think rocks.

    > It's funny how Napster has over 500 million users yet the sales of cd's > worldwide has risen 6% in the last year!! > *things that make you go "hmmmmmm"*

I challenge you to show how the two are statistically or factually related. I would like to know how that's related to Napster and not a booming economy. It's a point that so many Napster users love to dangle and prance about, but I have yet to see the two points linked.

What most of you are forgetting, is tha not all members of the DTIFC have computers and internet access, so the magazine is there only source of information. on DT.

I've got to pass the word about AudioGalaxy being a fine replacement for file-sharing software. It's actually web-based for file lookups and automatically chooses the best bandwidth path from you to grab your files. It has auto-resume, and it will queue files you are searching for even if those files aren't "online" at the time. It will keep them queued until someone with those files comes online. Very nice interface. Check it out.

First off, Ptacek - great post.

Second - I also don't see why you have to have an entire album DL'd to sample a band. I probably couldn't count with 10 people's fingers and toes the bands whose albums I have purchased solely because of a low-quality, partial-song MP3 or two. Spock's Beard, Symphony X, Ayreon, Freak Kitchen, Gordian Knot, Sean Malone, Michael Manring, Tony Levin, and Shadow Gallery are just a few of them. And I was a part-time-working high school student at the time. Let's face it - music (listening AND performing) is an EXPENSIVE hobby. It's all a matter of priorities. I don't find myself spending so much money on albums these days - I'm getting married, entering a new apartment lease, gotta fix my car, gotta buy furniture, etc. But I don't spend my days cruising Napster DL'ing full albums because I can't afford to buy the damn things. If you have to spend the money on life essentials (food, cars, and houses, etc.), and can't afford to buy CD's, don't rip off the artist and the record company by circumventing the system. Not cool.

    You see? ;oP

LOL, you gotta be kidding right? Then how come I got all Flower Kings albums, all Freak Kitchen ones etc etc etc. :) Naturally, it's still possible to improve Napster's way of work.

For everything else you said, I'm up with you Chris. :)

    > Napster to me was not about getting free music.

For me it is/was discovering new music, getting rare stuff and some songs that I would never buy the WHOLE album. Examples like: Tina Turner - Addicted To Love [live] Twin Peaks - Laura Palmer's Theme Eric Clapton & Lenny Kravitz - All Along The Watchtower

    etc.

    Okay,

Well, Jeremy and I are moving in just about 6 weeks time, and finally realized we *need* to get rid of some of our cd's (doubles, bad choices, what not), so I'm spamming you all:

Are we gonna start the napster thing all over again? *sigh*

We all love music. Some can afford to buy cds, some can't. It's as simple as that.

Yeah, I was rather happy to see Ptacek writing in again. I wonder if, like Al, he's just been sitting back and reading the jam and laughing his ass off at all the crap that's been going on. :)

Agreed. Music good, good vocals, lyrics lacking.

    > Is it just me or is anybody else tired of the complete lack of subtlety > in "social commentary" lyrics? I've had enough of "World BAD! Angst > GOOD!" to last me a lifetime.

Disagreements with the political content of the lyrics aside, they also suffer a bit from the Yngwie school of "not quite proper" English at times. Only an issue if you're a picky bastard. ;o)
