On a related tangent, there was a news story
recently about someone who passed a phony US $200
bill. Since there is no real $200 bill made, the phony
bill passer could not be charged with counterfitting.
(Before anyone gets any bright ideas, he was charged
with $200 worth of theft.)
It was at a Dairy Queen and the order was for 2 dollars
and change. The stupid cashier gave him $197 plus in change.
I think the cashier should be charged with stupidity...

Have you written/called CDNow explaining this? If you yell at them, they'll probably give it to you for the original price... Then again, a lot of e-companies haven't really caught on to the idea of real customer service yet, but it's worth a try. (You should probably not swear at them tho, that tends to make CS agents flip into "there's no making this guy happy" mode and you could end up with nothing)

Here is a press release from Mike Portnoy about the upcoming "Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York" DVD release:
I am extremely sorry to announce that due to errors in the DVD authoring process, the release date of Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York has once again been delayed to April 24th, 2001.
I am furious over these errors which were out of my hands and I am just as disappointed as any of you in having to wait to share this great DVD with you all.
I must stress that the delay has absolutely nothing to do with any errors or dissatisfaction on mine or the record company's behalf......they were stricly technical errors in the authoring process which forced me to pull the plug on production until the errors were corrected.
I know what a disappointment this is, but it will be worth the wait when the product is finally released in April.....In the meantime to tide you over, keep an eye on dreamtheater.net in the coming weeks for an M2000 Trailer to give you all a sneak preview!

what i want to know is where napster makes their money, under their current system. there are no built-in ads in the client, and no ads on the webpage either. the client is free for download. i have given them no money. how do they become a multi-million dollar corporation when they have no visible means of income? sure, they may have investors, but what do the investors hope to get out of their investment? this has puzzled me for the longest time. moo.

what, are you talking open-face sandwich or something? i put the PB on one slice of bread and the jelly on the other slice and then mush em together. you gotta take the PB side and put it on the jelly side cuz otherwise the jelly would get messy when you flipped it over. however, once they are safely locked together, the jelly and the peanut butter gracefully entwined in a fruity dance of love, i then flip it over one more time and eat it jelly side up.

Awhile back, Al the Progtologist brought up the overcompression of Ray Alder's voice on a track off of Disconnected. Anyway, I actually thought this was done for effect. Either way, I'm with Al, I wish they hadn't messed with the track that way.
I'm noticing a similar harshness in places on Enchant's latest - in both the vocals and guitars.
I've also noticed a "shrillness", for lack of better term, to Pain of Salvation's discs.
Does anybody know if any of these guys record straight to digital? Apparently I'm too lazy to check the liner notes to see if they mention it.

Just sticking my nose in (hi guys I only contribute occasionally) but I felt compelled to raise this issue/rumour. Regarding tape trading Vs Napster thing - when you purchase a blank tape, isnt there a small duty that is paid to (some element of) the music industry (perhaps the major labels?) as a 'blank tape tax'? If so then tape trading should be looked upon in a slightly different light to Napster (even though there is great potential to steal songs using one of those old fashioned radio things - usually fitted with a convenient tape 'recorder' (key word) attached to it).
Personally, I think that it would be nigh on impossible to determine a reliable distribution system for this 'tape tax' revenue but I just wanted to know if anyone else had heard this rumour.

That was true for digital tape media such as DAT. I don't know if you actually still pay for that nowadays since DAT is a pretty much non-mainstream these days, and that is largely because of the RIAA and record companies. They took a format which they saw as a major threat and taxed it to obscurity.
