Hey people! I was listening to Only a Matter of Time the other day, and was
paying extra special attention to the lyrics of that song, and have come to
the conclusion that that song's lyrics are my favorite for any DT song, and
maybe for any song I've ever heard. I don't pay that much attention to
lyrics most of the time, but Kevin Moore just outdid himself when he wrote
that song. The images he portrays are so incredible, and the way he does it
in that song is just masterful. Also, that song is so positive and
uplifting that anybody can be cheered up by it. Actually, that song should
be everybody's anthem, especially for musicians. You have to try to fulfill
your dreams, don't give up the fight. What a great message.

Now that we are talking about stories, what was the FIRST CD that you
purchased? I bought 4 CD's the day I bought my player, and they were....

Yep, there were only about 75 discs to choose from, I think this was 1986
or 1987. Anyway, list what your first CD purchase was.

Billy Thorpe's Children of the Sun Revisted. We bought the CD...then a
week later we bought a CD player. Don't have that CD player anymore,

My very first cd was purchased in 1987 about 6 months before I even bought
my first player!!!

It was a limited edition bonus disc of Helloween.
Walls Of Jericho w/ Judas (mini LP)
71 minutes 33 seconds on one disc!!!!
At the time that was pretty shit hot!!
]From memory I paid about 30 bucks for it.
It doesn't get much of a listen to these days but still holds fond memories!

well, i kept a lot of my brother's cd's......when he got his first cd
player, a friend of him gave him away a Slaugher Stick it to Ya cd.
and then my brother started buying Van halen, Aerosmith, Tesla, Cinderella,
Scorpions cd's....i got a little bit into that (i was like 12), and then
proceeded to start my own collection!
my very first cd's were:
Ozzy Osbourne- Tribute
Van Halen- Live right here, right know
..a couple of cd's later, i started experimenting heavily, thanx to what i
read in guitar mags. Passion and Warfare, and Eat em and Smile followed. I
felt a little ashamed to play any of those when anybody was around, you
know, weirdo Vai sounds. But i got used to it and now everybody had to stand
Stevie's guitar!
Anyway, this happened during 1993 i think.
Got my first DT cd in 1995 (i think i still have the goddamned purchase
ticket!).........experimenting again. I heard of them via word of mouth,
watched the LiT video, shit my pants, and bought Awake (it had more unheard
tracks to me....almost all I&W was in the LiT video)

I didn't even own a CD player until 1995. I was a bit slow getting onto the
technological bandwagon. :p But even so, the first CD I bought months
before I even had a CD player was the Awake Japanese Import. Then the Lie
Single... Then the Silent Man single... Then LatM... I basically
pre-bought the current DT catalog before I ever had anything to play them
on. Then, I got Journey's Greatest Hits when I got the player. :)

Okay, I'm back from the Progpower USA 2001 gig...tired, worn out, ears ringing, voice hoarse, ankle really hurtin'....and happy as hell that I attended. It was a terrific 2-day show all around and I heard a lot of really awesome bands...got to actually -see- a couple of 'em, too. :)
All the bands I saw (err, heard) were great; there's something about seeing these bands in an intimate, receptive setting that makes the experience THAT much cooler....but some deserve special attention.
Symphony X's show to close out Friday was excellent! And after I finally managed to get their autographs after their show on Friday (after 45 minutes of patient waiting, having missed the formal signing session due to a late connection at O'Hare), I figured the rest of the weekend was gravy. After all, I'd seen Evergrey and Pain of Salvation at Progpower '99 in Holland....
How wrong I was! Evergrey had some technical (and memory loss :)) problems but still turned in a fine show, with Tom in top form. I wasn't aware that half the band is relatively new, and one chap had only been with them for a month and a half! Considering that, they had an excellent show.
But wait..... Capping off Saturday night was Pain of Salvation's first show ever on North American soil, coming after a sleepless night at BWI (they missed their flight connection and had to 'sleep' in the airport).....and they were stupendous. A bit over two hours, the longest set they've ever played in their history, and, as they promised us a couple of times, they kicked everybody's ass. :)
But the heck with the bands.... Far more importantly :), I met so many cool people I'd only met online (or briefly in person at other shows) that it felt like a family reunion. I'm active in a few different havens of online prog fandom so I knew a lot of people there....or more often, THEY knew ME (I have a sometimes-horrible memory for faces, especially after minimal sleep :)). Ytsejammers from old times, fellow participants on the mikeportnoy.com Forum, fellow Seismicradio and Ytseradio deejays, and some old compatriots on the Perpetual Motion online web-board...plus Ray Alder of Fates Warning, people from Century Media and Inside/Out America, and the immortal Ken Golden of Laser's Edge. It was a pleasure putting so many names to faces. :)
My camera, held over the heads of those lucky bastards who got to stand closer to the stage than me :), got a slightly better view of the stage than I did. Pics are posted in the following directory:

All in all, I had a splendid time and look forward to next year. My only regrets are the rainy weather, missing Symphony X's formal signing session on Friday, and the low stage and small capacity of the venue. But otherwise, all was golden. What a ride!
