    Subject: Interesting RIAA article
    Message-ID: <5.0.2.1.2.20010226142502.01847798@pop.ecosoft.com>

The RIAA's figures were released last week, but the BBC story was delayed
until Monday, when the story would get the most exposure. Here's the top
    three paragraphs from that story:
CD sales plummeted last year in the U.S. and record industry officials say
the figures prove that Napster, the Internet music-sharing service, has
    harmed their business.
Sales of music compact discs fell by 39% last year according to the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
"Napster hurt record sales," said RIAA president Hilary Rosen.
This article reads like it might have been ghost-written by someone from
the record industry. It isn't until paragraph ten that journalistic
integrity kicks in enough for the Beeb to quietly mention what they're
    actually talking about:
Some experts say [sic] the drop of CD singles as being part of an
industry-wide slump, due to economic factors and a weak year musically.
    (Emphasis mine.)
That's right, CD singles. Unit sales for the singles were down 39%, revenue
down 36% (they raised prices, of course).
And CD singles account for how much of the RIAA's profits?
    Not quite one percent.
Yes, that's right: they lost 36% of 1% of their profits.
And the news media is reporting it as a 39% loss.
The facts are that their "CD sales" are up this year, even over last year's
stunning performance. The RIAA increased the average price of a full-length
CD from $13.65 to $14.02, and still managed to sell 3,600,000 more of them.
Total profit increase on this, the core of their business, was 3.1%, or
just shy of an extra $400,000,000.
But full-length CDs only account for 92% of the RIAA's revenue. They did
have weak performance in the other 8%. CD singles, as already noted,
dropped revenue by 36%. But the real casualty percentage-wise was
cassingles, which lost over 90% of its revenue from last year.
Gee, why could that be? Maybe because nobody wants them?
In fact, the RIAA's only real money-losing format of any significance was
cassettes, which, along with music videos, were the only format actually
cut in price. Cassette revenue dropped $436 million.
Wait a minute, what am I saying? "Money-losing"? They aren't losing money
on cassettes -- they're just not raking it in this year as fast as last
year. And gee, why might that be? Again, because nobody wants them?
And it's not like the RIAA is struggling to get by on slim profits. The big
picture is that, in the last nine years, they have tripled their annual
    income.
But they are desperate to spin this as a loss. The actual fact is that
their total revenue is down 1.8% from 1999. Last year, they made
$14,584,500,000. This year, they made $14,323,000,000.
But how could they blame Napster if they told the truth? What would they
say? "Napster is killing us! Our income is down almost two whole percent!
We are only pulling in $14,323,000,000 this year!"
    That probably wouldn't fly.
Especially because in the three categories which Napster has precisely zero
effect on -- cassettes, vinyl, and music videos -- their combined
    year-to-year loss was $579.5 million.
That's right. In the digital formats which Napster can trade, they are
making more money: $318,500,000 more revenue. In the analog and video
formats where Napster is irrelevant, they are making less money:
    $579,500,000 less revenue.
    That's the real story here.
But don't trust the press to report this one fairly. Don't trust the RIAA's
press release. Go read the RIAA's numbers yourself.
(Hell, don't even trust those numbers -- they don't add up. I was silly
enough to type them into a spreadsheet, and someone over there has some
problems doing simple arithmetic. I'd like to see an explanation for why
the revenue totals for 1992, 1995, and 1998 are off by tens of millions of
    dollars.)
The RIAA is desperately trying to spin this so that they won't look like
greedy bastards for turning down Napster's offer of a billion dollars.
If they just took that generous offer, then -- in a year that the BBC
suggests might be an "industry-wide slump, due to economic factors and a
weak year musically," and in a year for which Bertlesmann admits "we didn't
put that much good stuff out" -- their revenue would be up $739,000,000
over last year. And up $1,600,000,000 from 1998.
But that isn't enough for them.

    Umm,
When I got my player in 1994 (hell i was 14) Skid Row "skid row" was
given to me by a friend who didn't want it anymore, and I got Tesla
"Mechanical resonance" and Whitesnake's Greastest hits with the Player. 3
years later I rediscovered Dream Theater (after seeing Lie and PMU on MTV
1992, 1994 and thinking "Cool band. chick bass player")

    see now, this is fun!

ok, i listened to tapes until 1995, when I bought my first CD player,
which was a sony. I had a summer job at sony and I got it at their
Secret Employee-Only Store hidden in the depths of New Jersey.

But, I got my first CD two whole years earlier. Actually I got two at
once: Tubular Bells II and Bjork's Debut. So figure that out. Anyway, I
got a few more here and there and by the time I got the player I had a
shoebox full. I would take them down the hall to my friend's dorm room
and listen to them there. Of coure, once I got the player I started
getting the CD's in earnest, and it was around then that I got every DT
CD I could find. I don't know how many I have now, because it's too
disorganized to count. Not that many, probably less than 200.

<< Hey people! I was listening to Only a Matter of Time the other day, and was paying extra special attention to the lyrics of that song, and have come to the conclusion that that song's lyrics are my favorite for any DT song, and maybe for any song I've ever heard. I don't pay that much attention to lyrics most of the time, but Kevin Moore just outdid himself when he wrote that song. The images he portrays are so incredible, and the way he does it in that song is just masterful. Also, that song is so positive and uplifting that anybody can be cheered up by it. Actually, that song should be everybody's anthem, especially for musicians. You have to try to fulfill your dreams, don't give up the fight. What a great message. Alexis >>

Alexis, I agree with you 100%. I've thought for years that the lyrics to OAMOT were some of the best I'd ever heard. Definitely my fave of any DT song. Amazing imagery. I think my favorite and most thought-provoking couple of lines in any DT song is the following: "I understand mine's a risky plan, and your system can't miss, but is security after all a cause or symptom of happiness?" Genius. :-)

But my first ever CD was "Ride The Lightning", which I received as a gift along with my first CD player from my ex-girlfriend. Too bad she turned out to be such a psycho... she used to give great gifts. ;-)

The soundtrack to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. I still have it. At the time, there were only about 50 CDs on the market from ANY genre, and I had a wait a month before something else appeared that I felt like buying....so for quite a while I had a RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK soundtrack player, period. :) I honestly don't know what happened to that Multitech-brand CD player (actually made by Yamaha). I don't remember it failing.

"Children of the Sun" was my favorite song for a looong time. It's still well up there in my all-time list and gives me the shivers in a kewl, spacey way. It was part of this planetarium music/laser show here and the combination was like unto a religious experience; I can remember almost every second of that show and it's been almost twenty years. It was also my introduction to Pink Floyd and Rush. :)

But I remember my first record when I was a kid was "God of Thunder" The first purchase I made with my own money. Then I saved my allowance and bought the album Destroyer and a couple of posters. Do you remember the first time hearing Dream Theater ? I caught one of the 3 or so times Mtv played PMU and went to the record store the next day and made the counter dude play the cd over the store's music system. At least 3 other people bought the cd while I was there. Oh well. Good Fortune. Billy.

Great post Robb. Very interesting stuff. I guess both sides of the debate are spinning their own form of propaganda but this takes the cake so far!! I'd love to say what the artists combines income of cd/cassette/vinyl/video sales would be in comparison. The record companies remind me of the greed ridden banks. The rich get richer, the poor get the picture!

hey NKOTB were awesome back in the day :) and i'm a guy :) i still have step by step and hangin tough. and yes, i listen to them occasionally, but mostly for "memories'" sake :) only about 2 years ago did i realize that "step by step" was a song about convincing a girl to have sex with you. ("step 1, we can have lots of fun; step 2, there's so much we can do; step 3, it's just you and me; step 4, i can give you more; step 5, don't you know that the time has arrived, huh!" :) those poor impressionable teens. what am i saying, if i didnt figure it out i damn well hope they didnt or that doesnt speak too highly of MY intellect :) moo.

hmmm.. so that's what the songs about! ;-) I never really listened or thought about the lyrics back in my tween years (isn't that an awful word: tween?) -- nkotb was all about "Joey Joe" for me. me-OW.

This is embarrassing but oh well..

My first cd player was bought in 88 or 89 .... It was a portable, very big and clunky...

My first cd was bought 3 months before that. I got 3 of them. MC Hammer, Tone Loc, and U2..

Thankfully I got into rock and prog less than a year later.

    LOL

The first CD I bought was 'Nine Lives' by Aerosmith, which I listened to on my dad's CD player for about a year before I got my own. The last CD I bought was 'Fugazi' by Marillion, which I haven't got a chance to listen to yet. 'Scenes From A Memory' is still probably the best album I have received (got it for Christmas 1999). Speaking of DT for a moment, anyone know where I can get my hands on the singles for "Lie" or "Hollow Years," or any others either (except "The Silent Man," I have that one)? I can't find them anywhere...

To me, it seemed like the first half of Younique was great. Hard rockin' songs. Then on the 2nd half of the CD started to go into slower, experimental songs. As a whole, the CD is great - believe me... it's just something I noticed about the 2nd half. No biggie

yeah, i do as a matter of fact. i had no friggin' idea who they were either. it was back when awake was just getting ready to be released, and they were on headbanger's ball on MTV. i miss that show........<sigh>. anyhow, it was really late at night (early morning probably), and they were interviewing the band about the new album. they also played a few of their videos, but the only one that i can remember with clarity was "Lie". i remember falling in & out of sleep thinking, "wow, these guys are really good..........<asleep>". that same year (this was back when pittsburgh had good hard rock stations) i heard PMU played constantly on the air. i went to the local NRM, found out who it was, then had someone buy it for me for christmas! i listened to it non-stop for the next several months, then promptly went to the store to see what else they had out. i scooped up awake, only to find that, low & behold, i had just heard these guys not so long ago one sleepy night on headbanger's ball. the rest from there is history. there is my story of discovering dream theater. and i'm spent..........
