My 1st Dream Theater experience

so there i was sittin at home watchin arsenio hall when "the"
commercial aired. it was for a cd. It was called "HARD MUSIC" looked
pretty budget.
but it got to the point. (and so will i)...

so my cousin was the 1st one to but the cd. he liked the song "paranoid"
by sabbath on it. so thats why he picked up the cd!? it had other
hard/heavy artists on it like skid row, STP!?, slayer, harem scarem etc.

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE!!

They had this group on it that blew us away.
This group was like no other.

It was Dream Theater. "pull me under"

now...this song stood apart because..well, look at the above mentioned
tunes. >> paranoid, slave to the grind, etc.

Just the whole elaborate opening of Pull me under killed the rest of
competition on the cd.

it was like, which one of these songs doesnt belong.

I mean, we were just kids...we werent ready for that adult sounding
stuff yet...
we were still into our g'n'r...our pantera. *sniff*
but when DT was played...
It was...it was like a party in our ears...and everyone was invited!!

we became prog whores after that.
yep, grade A quality progressive sluts.

so then.....

Interesting....brings back memories of getting that first "bulky, shiny
disc in a square plastic case" and enjoying it in all it's digital
clarity:

First CD: U2-Rattle and Hum...Underrated follow up to the album of the
decade....

Most recent cd(s) (All within the last 10 hours): Temptations Box Set
(Granted, probably not overly popular on this list, but I'm a fan and at
$25, it's hard to pass up on a sealed 5 disc box set by anyone!)/Blues
Saraceno-Hairpick (He and Kotzen are much better off in my
opinion-Kotzen's solo stuff is simply superb!)/Dave Matthews-Everyday
(Glen Ballard is all over this)/American Hi-Fi - S/T (nice modern day
rock and a bargain at Best Buy)

As you can see, I'm pretty much all over the music genre map (except
rap, I can only go so far). Diversity keeps it all fresh in my opinion.

I had all their albums at that time and I found it a proper way to celebrate my new CD player with my favorite album.

Latest CD: Freak Kitchen - Spanking Hour ( and before that: 'Bull', Appetizer and Dead Soul Men, all by FK. Quickly becoming a Kitchen Freak)

First DT Spotting: Headbangers Ball ('93 I think it was), they played the video of Pull Me Under and had an interview with KM & JLB.

Ran out an bought IAW the next day!

Tentatively opening for Spock's Beard are Glass Hammer, who are pretty good themselves. Kinda a prog night. We'll have a bunch of bands playing over the course of the weekend in addition to a pile of other neet stuff. Check out the fan-pics on the website from last year to get a 'feel' for the convention and the varied (!) crowd that attends. Even the -cheesy- costumes are good. We're talking about 20,000 people here. Geek-fest this ain't. :)

Oh, you won't see Spock's listed on the website because, instead of running the website guest update like a good boy, I'm here (and on mp.com) posting the news first. :)

However in this recent first string I have noticed a couple of names that have given me quite an uneasy queeze . and that being the new kids on the block, and winger (stuart of beavis & butthead's favorite band) Although I haven't lowered to the level of nkotb or winger , I too have made some cd purchases that I'd rather not admit, but in order for the new kid winger and other 80's cheese fans to flame back cringe in fear these are nasty

To name a couple Deee Lite and Phil Aseo & Connie Lingus . The one I listen to the most that I have to be by myself is James Brown "Godfather of Soul" because I do the moves along with it. My first CD was Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti back in 1990 when I was in seventh grade. Even though it's not prog, it still ranks pretty high as one of my all time favorites. Still recovering? I may never recover... Symphony X ripped! Two days of progressive bliss - 12 bands and NONE of them sucked. Hard to find CDs were plentiful - Great food and spirits - 300+ people packed into a small venue and NO fights - Great camaraderie!

Highlights: Symphony X - Bullshitting with Ray Alder for an hour! I found his talk button and damn near had to slap him to shut him up.. :) (The man is a diehard motor head) - Meeting SO many YtseJammers. Whew... I had a B L A S T !

I spoke to Ray about that at ProgPower. That was an engineering fuckup that slipped through the cracks because the production was rushed. Ray was not very pleased with the final product.

Yup! I was there. I had just heard DT for the first time a few weeks before. Pirate Radio was rotating "Pull Me Under" and I thought, "Damn, these guys might be pretty good." Heh. I was totally unprepared for how good that show (and DT) was. I promptly went out and bought Images and Words the next morning, and began a long search to find the mysterious "first album" which was mentioned at the show. Of course, now now it's easy to find. I actually had to buy it as an import, and then was really disappointed with the singing. Luckily, Awake came out a few weeks after that, and immediately assumed and has since maintained the top slot in my favorite CD list.

God, I'd love to hear this show again. Is it available for download at LitS? I gotta go check!

Great article Robb - cheers, it confirms my suspicions! (except the one regarding my boss and that youngster ;o) )

My first CD player was a Philips concrete block lookalike in around 1990 and my first CD was possib1y something by The Stone Roses or someone like that at around the same time. My first vinyl album was Iron Maidens 'Seventh Son of A Seventh Son' and I reckon and my first Napster download was definitely summat unreleased by DT although I cant remember the exact track cos I tried to grab loads of em at the same time! Like ya do at first!

The first time I heard DT was only a coupla years ago really and it was the Images and Words album - ahh the memories! Although I must admit that it took a few listens for JL's voice to grow on me.

Can you guys remember yer first 7'' single and yer first gig?

My first single was Whitesnake's Here I Go Again (loved the track but the buying impulse largely came from seeing the girl in the video - who Ive mentally seen ever since with a kind of 'wheres Nathan?' look on her face). The first single I ever became compulsive about was Dusty Springfield's I Only Wanna Be With You which I used to constantly play and 'dance' to when I was around 5 years old.

My first gig was Simple Minds in a packed Wembley stadium in 1989 - I was around 14 yrs old I guess and it was fantastic (there must have been 70000 people there which is huge - especially for the UK). Texas supported them too (whn I Dont Wanna Lover was a hit) and I remember them doing a great cover of Sweet Child O Mine.

I'll add in here, since this thread keeps expanding, my most embarrasing CD moment:

I had a stack of about 10 cd's that I was trading in to a store selling used cd's. I always kept them emaculate, and the owner was giving me a decent price for each. He was happy with the first nine he looked at, but when he hit the tenth disc he said... "Um... I don't really think I have a market for this one." The disc? Milli Vanilli. :-P

Most recent CD purchase:

A 2nd copy of Superior's Younique from LaserCd replacing my original which has disappeared under 'mysterious circumstances'.

Even though I've been a music fan most of my life , I didn't get any cd's or a cd player until I already owned about 200 cassettes. My first cassette ever was Guns n' Roses' "Appetite for Destruction," which I still listen to about once a month or so. It was also the album that I blame myself for taking the rock n' roll train and not the rap train, which I am very grateful for.

I got my first 2 cd's together...they were albums that were not available on cassette and probably still are not to this day - Bruce Dickinson's "Balls to Picasso" and King Crimson's "Discipline".

I haven't posted to the jam in a long time and I've been reading all your arguments for and against napster. I'd have to say I'm indifferent to the subject. I'm against it because there are people out there who are idiots and just downlaod entire albums and never purchase them, which is bad because buying a CD is almost like 'voting' for a band. I know the band gets a lot more $$$ from touring but the number of album sales, I believe, are in direct correlation to venue/tour size. Dream Theater isn't very big as it is, and I know people refer to them as an 'internet' band and I don't want to see them do any worse in album sales because of Napster. I still want to see my American band in America. I don't want Dream Theater to become an American band like Symphony X who doesn't perform in America (until Friday - I hope to see some of you in Brooklyn!)

On the other side of the coin, there are bands I listen to that are either old, and their cd's are rare, like Gentle Giant, Watchtower and Angelwich. And then there are bands whose cd's I can buy but on import, but they're really expensive like Syphony X, Empty Tremor, Vanden Plas, and Angra. Although I still own cd's by those bands, sometimes they do bad things to my wallet. I guess you can blame the crappy music scene in America on that.

There are also times where I like to get cd's by bands months before the release like "Falling into Infinity," "Metropolis II," and the new Megadeth CD, "The World Needs a Hero". (Any megadeth fans here - this cd is really heavy and really good. Buy it when it comes out.) And thats what I also do...if I get the CD in advance on mp3 off the net, the only reason I get it, is because it's the only place to get it; I also purchase the CD when it comes out in the stores. Unfortunately, others don't think like I do...especially thsoe who are not musicians like myself and care more about themselves than the bands they listen to.

So I guess I'm pretty indifferent to Napster. Here's a thoguht though - If all cd's that have ever been produced were as 'available' and easy to purchase as any MTV band, I would be whole-heartedly against Napster.

Oops - one other thing - except for live concerts not ever officially released...this is something that Napster is good for, but I guess you could just go to the "Lines in the Sand" DT site.
