I just want to see what everyone else thinks about these bands, since I
don't really know where to put them. When people ask me, "What is this Prog
you're always talking about?" I want to be able so give them some names
they'll know, since Symphony X and Spock's Beard aren't really popular,
whereas Deep Purple and Styx are pretty well known. Besides, I need a way
to kill time, and lots of it, so I reorganize my CDs about once a week.

Yeah, I prefer alphabetical order. It doesn't take all that
much effort if you just do it over an extended period. I'd never find
anything otherwise with 700+ CDs. Don't you put them in alphabetical
order within the sub-genres already?
The only stumbling block for alphabetical order that I've found
is deciding what to do with CDs that have various bands on them like
"Tales from Yesterday" (the Yes tribute released by Magna Carta).
Do they all go under "V" for Various, or do you put the tribute CDs with
the band that they are a tribute to? Do you put the Majesty bootlegs
in with the Dream Theater CDs? Silly stuff like that. Also, I do
separate out my soundtrack, jazz and classical CDs into separate sections
to make them easier to find (and since I listen to them less often).
Oh, and if you do put them in alphabetical order be sure to get
CD holders that do NOT have those damned slots for each CD -- don't
bother with alphabetical order otherwise. I used to have one of those
and every time I added a new CD I'd have to move every last CD down by
one slot. Argh! Even when you leave a few slots open here and there
you'll eventually have to move a large section. Use bookshelves or
get some CD holders with no slots.
No system is perfect. But, I definitely find it easiest to
keep them in alphabetical order.
The whole alphabetical system has come up recently for me since
I've been ripping all my CDs to a few hard drives to I can broadcast
them via FM throughout my house (my new Chrismtas toy). I've found the
MusicMatch program to be a handy way to do this since it looks up the
CD online at CDDB and writes the artist, album and track names to the
hard drive. It put that "Tales from Yesterday" under Various -- I may
have to move it. Despite having quite a few obscure prog CDs there has
only been one that it didn't find on CDDB -- Curious Works' CD.
Pretty amazing.
I'm up to the letter "F" now. It's pretty cool to tune all my
various radios to 89.9 and then walk around the house listening to the
same music in every room. Now I just need to write a program which will
play random songs from my CDs, allow my wife and I to rate them so my^H^H
our favorite ones will come up more often, and of course change what's
playing from any computer in the house. Hm, a wireless PDA might come
in handy for that...

If like me, you're averse to cold and logical alpha-numeric organizing,
do what I do: put everything in the middle and let every album connect
to those on either side of it. Instead of trying to force every band
into a specific catagory, let fuzzy logic prevail. If it were a color
wheel, Styx and DP would be the orange that goes between yellow and red.
But more realistically, they would be the schoolbus yellow that goes
between yellow and puke orange. Tertiary color combos aside, as far as
metal, I go from hard to prog - I start on one side of my collection
with, say, metallica, then from there you have maiden, then savatage, QR
or fates, Superior, DT. Then Rush, then more and more proggy bands and
less and less metal bands: alan parsons, genesis...and that brings us to
floyd, which brings us to all kinds of stuff - cure, maybe...then we're
in 80's/90's alternarock, so pixies, I Mother Earth, and so on. I try to
establish a direction but I don't force any hard lines in there.
I use whatever the hell assocations I want - in the above example I used
prog and metal, but it could be "stuff that I like to fuck to" or "good
road tunes". And of course, in between would be "stuff that I like to
fuck to while driving". It doesn't matter, just so long as you know what
you like to fuck to.

anyway...i wasn't sure about behind, so I didn't want to buy it until I
napstered it, which i just did. Here's what I think: this is a fantastic
album, but if I had to pick, I would go with younique in a heartbeat.
It's sooooo much better. I'll probably still purchase Behind, but I just
don't think it's even in the same league as the second album. I'm not
even saying I don't like it. I like it lots! but there's some
weaknesses. Like, "Tainted Silence". kind of just a formulaic prog thing
goin' on there. But even there, you can see lots of promise. This is
such a talented band, it's silly.

Ahhhrrgggg...... I've been living in the same city for years, heard people talk about 'em, read about 'em but been to lazy to check them out. But last week I got into a record store and picked up their latest CD and...
I'm playing it almost 24/7! ...and when I'm not close to any audio equipment I go around humming and singing it myself to the annoyances of the people around me!
Do check them out, I don't know how easy You can get their CD worldwide, I know they have distribution deal in Asia but if they are available in USA I don't know but You can find 'em at www.cdnow.com.

Freak Kitchen!
I can't explain how they sound, the 'Dead Soul Men' CD I bought is heavy and melodic, lots of odd meters, great guitar work (and bass & drums of course), interesting lyrics and impressive arrangements.
The guitarist, singer and main composer, 'IA' Eklundh is a well know Zappa freak and does play regularly with a Zappa 'tribute' project. He was also one of the first to be signed to Vai's new record company as a solo artist after Vai had heard him perform one Zappa tune, commenting 'I've never play it that good!'.
They also have a great fan site at http:www.freakkitchen.com Were You can find information on every thing FK and some! There is also sound bits and lyrics (plus personal comment from IA) to all their songs, I must say it's the best band site I've been to.

Behind is a MUCH heavier CD from Superior. On Younique, the first half of the CD is fairly heavy, and then the second half of the CD kinda goes off into less heavy jamming... But Behind rocks hard just about all the way through.
Depends on personal taste... if you like it heavy, you'll favor Behind. If you are more into progressive rock, you'll favor Younique.

I agree. Put 'em where you can find 'em. If you totally went by genre, some of Jordan Rudess' cds should go in New Age, but do I put them there? No, because when I think of JR, I think of DT, which is in the Prog Metal section. Except his Christmas one, which is in my Christmas section....
Confusing? Maybe for you.

CNN has been going on an on about Israel's new prime minister today.
When I heard his name, I thought: This can't be! Cause you see, All this time I have been thinking of Gary Cherone as just another great singer. But now it turns out he's a big shot Israeli politician, and today he was elected prime minister. I have certainly underestimated his leadership abilities.
The news also made it clear to me what happened after Van Halen III. Here's the argument:
Eddie: Gary, if you think you are so fucking smart, why don't you run for the precidency? Gary: Maybe I will! But not in a country near you assholes! Michael Anthony: Try Israel, that should be Extreme enough fer ya. Their election is coming up soon. Eddie: Yeah! You can become the new Jesus or something. Gary: Are you threatening me? You think I can't do it? That's it. I'm outta here!
