While I guess there is a lot of prog being produced in the US,
it gets absolutely zero mass media attention. The radio stations play
mainstream "alternative" (eg. Limp Bizkit, 3 Doors Down, etc) and/or
classic rock (which may include a few prog bands), but not modern prog.
I think that it's mainly the Internet which has enabled the prog fan
base to come together and help support the various prog bands out there.

Hey there, don't forget the college scene either. Granted, a lot
of the bands that are floating around colleges right now are either
power-pop (i.e. Weezer-style), hardcore, or acoustic folk. But, there are
more prog fans/players out there than you might think. I'm a junior at
Geneva College (small, Christian college an hour outside of Pitts., PA)
where there's only an enrollment of MAYBE 2500. However, I can think
right off the top of my head at least 2 dozen musicians here that love
prog, and many more that love to listen to it. We're out there, ya' just
gotta' know where to find us.

Well some people are working on it - but until UK consumers a) hear about these bands b) are able to buy their disks in the stores or go see the band live it isn't going to change

Though it was great to see a good review of disks like Symphony X's 'V' in Classic Rock Magazine (I assume that you know that this magazine exists), it was depressing to discover that it was the first time that esteemed Metal journalist Dave Ling (veteran of Kerrang!, Metal Hammer etc) had actually heard the band's music.

    > From the look of the current US music scene > there appears to be a much greater diversity > of musical styles, and - I never thought I'd > ever say this - most of the really innovative > acts are from the other side of the pond.

Don't discount europe either! There's plenty of interesting stuff from across the channel too.

There is good stuff being produced in the UK too, but unless you dig hard you aren't going to find it.

The only chinks of light I can see right now are

    a) The Classic Rock Society (boldly going where few dare to tread, constantly drawing attention to excellent UK bands). Now if they weren't based in Rotherham I'd hazard a guess that they'd have more success http://www.birwood.demon.co.uk/crs.htm Check out Karnataka or Mostly Autumn, Parallel or or 90 Degrees or longer established acts like Arena, Jadis, IQ. The UK isn't moribund, just yet

    b) Classic Rock Magazine - yes it is staffed by load of old cynical ex-Kerrang! hacks :-) but it does what it does very well. Where else would you read about DT, Spocks Beard etc, alongside excellent articles on prog oldies like Floyd and other giants of the 70's/ 80's. I was asurred that when the distribution passed from Dennis Publishing to Futurenet, the average punter would be able to find it in his local W H Smiths - but no such luck. You may find it in HMV or Virgin - I usually get it from Borders. Clever people take out a subscription here https://www.futurenet.com/secure/subs1.asp?ID=85

    c) TotalRock - Metal and Prog Radio - via Sky channel 950 or via Windows Media (a huge improvement on Real Audio). Once again the usual suspects pop up - Tommy Vance, Malcolm Dome etc, but it is surprisingly good and varied. Dome's show on a Saturday evening is particularly worthy of note. http://www.totalrock.com/ They are also starting to promote shows for the likes of bands who would never normally visit these shores - Stratovarius before Christmas was a sell-out, coming up we have Hammerfall/Virgin Steel/Freedom Call and Helloween - and they are not forgetting the new bands or ancients like Doro either.

I suppose I have to throw in mention of the mag I do some work for - Powerplay magazine - Ok we are small (and we need more subscribers) but we cover a fair range of rock, metal and prog which doesn't even get covered in Classic Rock Magazine - check out the UK gigguide and the Festivals listing and tell me that there isn't much happening in the UK.

    http://www.powerplaymagazine.co.uk/

Now if Brits would just get off their arses, leave the TV behind to go out for a nights entertainment and watch a band that would be a start

    Charlie

I have no problem finding CDs by Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree, etc. And in the last 12 months I've seen Dream Theater four times, Spock's Beard three times (two as support for DT), Porcupine Tree three times (once supporting DT, and once if you count the show I'll be going to in two weeks), King's X half a time (I left halfway through the show), Yes, Steve Vai, and others. I am also aware that the Flower Kings, Stratovarius and others have played in the UK recently. No shortage of prog gigs.

My entire gig attendance history is at http://www.ytse.freeserve.co.uk/ if anyone's interested.

The arguments that you can't find prog CDs, and you can't see prog bands live, simply hold no water with me. The music *is* there for the taking.

Yes, I noticed that. Someone needs to subscribe that guy to the 'jam, with or without his consent. :-)

Again, I can easily find this magazine in practically every newsagent. I don't understand why it's so scarce in other parts of the country.

    > c) TotalRock - Metal and Prog Radio - via Sky channel 950 or via > Windows Media (a huge improvement on Real Audio).

Ha. I tried to listen to it recently but was unable to connect due to their crap server being overloaded.

ok, I can't sell anything through CyberMusic, which is what the official site uses. They only sell official merchandise and if I try to pass off my shirt as official merch, i'm gonna get reamed. However, another, if I understand correctly, a fan-associated shirt is ok - i.e., the ytsejam shirt.

But i wanted to do something different. So i've been thinking about it, and here's what I'm a gonna do: I'm going to make a simple, low-key fan shirt. it's going to be most likely just black ink, and for that matter, just a heartprint on the front, nothing on the back. the shirt itself will be...get this...your choice of light flourescent green or light yellow, or white. and perhaps I'll do a black one w/white ink. I think the black logo against flourescent colors is cool, though. especially yellow or green.

Crazy, you say? Nay! First off all, we all have way too many black, intricate, decorative shirts taking up space in our drawers. And can we wear them except to concerts? do you guys know what happened when I wore my maiden shirt to work one time? my boss said "don't ever do that again". and this was a casual dress code.

I have always wanted a shirt that I could wear anywhere, maybe work out in, etc...so i'm making it. you could wear this with the ubiquitous unbuttoned collar shirt and it just looks like a cool flourescen green shirt. or maybe you show off that nify logo, or whatever I put there. And I still might put something in the back.

Oh, BTW, since it's just one color of ink, I am hoping to be able to sell these - heavyweight cotton of course - for around $13. including shipping!

i'll let you all know more soon, hopefully.

I totally agree. The only way I hear about shows is thru the internet. Before I was on the internet I would miss shows, have no knowledge of new releases....

And hearing prog on the radio is very rare. For example I heard Home once and that was late at night.

How about using a Majesty symbol? Or are you not allowed to use the logos of the band? If you've downloaded my DT font you'll see that by using the Y key (for Ytsejam ;) you can make a Majesty symbol any size you want.

I was just wondering why you wouldn't use that for the "sign" of the Ytsejam ML instead of the heart thing.

Or for that matter, how come we can't do the DT logo AND the Majesty symbol? I dunno, just tossing ideas, since with a font that works now you can do any of that stuff, just give the font to the guy who does the graphics and bam, you've got yourself a portable logo.

Don't wanna intrude on ya though :)

Maybe when he said "heartprint" he meant the location, not the image?

Anyhoo, given his description, I won't be ordering one, since a black concert T _IS_ something I can wear everyday and a bright fluorescent shirt is something I would wear never.

Heh, those were supposed to be private emails. I guess I hit the wrong button when it asked me if I'd like to write mail to the Reply-To address ;) Anyway, I thought when he said heart print that he meant the burning heart symbol. Duh, I'm an idiot. :)

I agree, a black T-Shirt with white print would be something I'd definitely look into getting, while a flourescent shirt would be something that I haven't worn since my junior high school days.

speaking as a tech theatre dork (yay tech theatre dork!), i cannot ever have "too many" black t-shirts.. i'd totally buy a black shirt with white print.. i'd consider buying a white shirt.. maybe...

flourescent colors are not let into my word, tho.. never, ever, ever!

    *grin*

Same here. :p No offense, Jason, but I can wear this shit to work but sure as hell wouldn't be caught dead wearing flourescent colors to work unless I planned to be standing in the middle of traffic in an orange vest holding the survey stick. And that won't be happening anytime soon, if ever. :) -- KorgX3 figures if you want a flourescent yellow shirt, why not just buy a white one then piss on it?

Oh man.......... the term CamelToe was originated by describing what a female's crotch looks like when she wears pants or jeans that are WAY TOO TIGHT. You can see everything....... and if you look at a picture of a camel's foot, you can see why they refer to that :)

    any more questions? :)

Met 00 Jersey, I saw 1 on ebay one time, nut 70 dollars was WAY too much for my blood.

On the subject of Mike's email, he still does answer from that addy, if your message deems a reply. When he reads it (or everyone gets this) you get this impersonal auto reponse saying that he read it, and goes into how peoplle have abused the fact that his email is public. I mean on the metallica board someone posted his email and said "hey he trashed Lars on metal sludge, here's his email, bombard him with hate mail"

Shit like that goes on all the time. I know he's unsubbed from the jam, which sucks, but the forum is a very cool place to hang out.
