Go with Win2K if you've got the extra $100 to spend on the OS. I HIGHLY
recommend it. Dell's configuration pages will warn you of hardware
conflicts but most of the hardware conflicts with Win2K were ironed out long
ago. Mostly it was just hardware companies ill-prepared for the changeover
and being unwilling to create new drivers for old hardware.

As far as hardware goes... You'll need to check with Dell to
make sure your video card has a video out port along with the monitor out.
More than likely you'll need a converter for your RCA cable (I think my
Voodoo3 came with one, tho). The SBlive's fine for what you want to do but
you'll need specialized software to convert your analog recordings to
digital if you want to master it and take the pops and hisses out of it.
Spin Doctor that's packaged with EZ CD Creator Deluxe does an iffy job of
it. I'm sure there are much better programs out there but that's always
    monetary. :)

As for the 12x burner. Call Dell. I'm sure they can hook you up.

    --
KorgX3 has been on the phone with Dell too much this last two days. hehehe.
(Not Dell's fault entirely. I think they rock)

What type of capture card is it coming with? You should be able to pipe composite video in via RCA or S-video. One of the most popular video capture programs in the amateur scene is called Virtual Dub or VDub. I can't remember where you download it at, but if you go to http://www.arstechnica.com/, then to the Open Forum and do some searching you'll find out where to get it and some very detailed instructions on how to use it. As far as I've read, everything should work with Windows 2000. I'm using an ATI AiW Radeon with 2000 and it rocks.

good luck man, sounds like fun, tk

    Hello Jam-type people:

I de-lurk for one selfish reason only. I need to rummage through thy grey matter regarding video cards, audio cards and operating systems.

I'm buying a new PC, and this what I want to use it for: 1) Digitizing video from my analog camcorder and/or VCR. 2) Digitizing audio from my home cassette deck. 3) Burning CDs at the speed of light. 4) Playing DVDs on my PC, but watching them on my TV.

Not much to ask, right? Can I plug my analog RCA jacks into the video card or do I need an adapter? Is the SoundBlaster Live going to cut it for my audio cravings? I've got the perfect system spec'd out with Dell, except they only offer the 8X CD-RW. I've really got my heart set on a 12X. Gateway has that configuration, but I've heard much better things about Dell. Is an internal CD-RW better than an external?

Is WindowsME really as buggy as I hear? Should I go with Win2KPro? Or will that cause conflicts with all the hardware?

Apologies for clogging the Jam with this, but I'm getting different answers from different people and need a little clarification. I've got about $3K to play with.

Reply direct to me if you wish. Thanks all!

    Hi Jammers :

Well now that someone started on religious matters I said to myself : "the 'religious opinion' lip will be on for the next few months" ;) but I think we should not get into that ... I won't in anyway Glad to see that it has turned to the discovery of some great books (:-))

I find Sonata Artica "Ecliptica" very good. actually they are for me one of those cool 'background' groups (if you know what I mean). But I have never heard the other albums : are they as good as "Ecliptica" ?

Last question to whoever can answer : It might have been on the Jam before in my dark days when I didn't read them all, I've heard of the SFAM songbook as we all have. It's done by JP, but I heard that it's not only guitars. Is this true ? If it includes bass too I'll swim to the nearest shop (but I doubt that).

    See ye all, FrancoIrishCycoDreamer

Personally I would give the Grammy to Kenny Wayne Shepard because out of those songs his is the best. That kid is really something.

    Hey everybody

I'm sorry but I don't understand how this tree works :)) If anybody could explain on what depends if you are a branch or a leaf, I tried to figure it out but it doesn't work? I would love to have that show. And if I have no boots of my own to trade, can I get the stuff? And where do I have to sign up? _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

A branch makes copies for other people. A leaf receives a copy.

But, don't hold your breath because those guys that teased us with this boot have taken back their offer (for now, anyway). Bastages!
