I had something similar to this several months ago. I ran into a problem where nearly every new DVD I bought (Spaceballs, The Abyss, etc) would no longer play on my computer. The menu would sometimes show up incorrectly, the title wouldn't play, and occasionally it would crash my software DVD player as soon as I hit Play.

I have a Sony DVD player hooked to the home theater in the living room, but for watching stuff in my bedroom, I use my 19" monitor and surround sound speakers with my DVD-ROM. Here I was, not able to play new DVDs. *Old* DVDs still played just fine. Even *some* new discs would play without problems. And the ones that were giving me trouble on the PC would still play without error in my component DVD player.

So that got me thinking it might be hardware trouble. I check for firmware upgrades, but I was up to date. I contacted tech support for the drive (Toshiba) and they recommended upgrading the *software* that plays the discs -- something I never would have thought was the problem. I had been using DVD Express (the software player, not the online reetailer), and I also had CyberLink's PowerDVD player. I looked into it, and there was a new version of PowerDVD out, so I downloaded the trial. Sure enough, it played the "problem" discs just fine. So after all that, it was just the player that was the problem.

So getting back to your problem, I would recommend downloading the trial version of PowerDVD 3.0 from CyberLink, and see if that eliminates your playback problems. If it does, get a copy of the full version. You can get it from their website:

    http://www.cyberlink-usa.com/english/products/powerdvd/powerdvd.asp

I have also heard the WinDVD player is very good as well, but I have never used it personally.

Anyway, PowerDVD is supposedly compatible with just about every DVD-ROM, video card, and motherboard out there, and the quality is top notch. My only complaint is that it lacks a "Always on Top" feature, which would make watching DVDs while I work online far easier. Then again, I'm running 2.55, maybe 3.0 finally added that.

Of course, there is also a good chance that your computer (200mhz) just can't handle the playback. I would highly recommend stepping up your plans to upgrade to a new system. Keep in mind that there are always cheap (less than $150) DVD players out there that you can get. But my feeling is that if you are going to spend the money, spend it once, and get something good.

    Hope this helps.

Hear, hear. When I upgraded to Win2K I started having nasty problems with
my Xing DVD player. I switched over to PowerDVD 2.0 and haven't had any
problems since. I was playing DVD's superbly on a 400MHz processor. I used
to play them before that on a 166Mhz proc. :) I think that was with a
hardware decoder card though (can't remember for sure). 1st generation DVD
player sucked ass, but it worked. I would think a 200 might do OK on
software, but I've never tried it, either.

    Anywhoot. Good luck!

KorgX3 thinks PowerDVD is da bomb. WinDVD's not too bad, either.

I lost about $75 to the prick because he had some bullshit bootleg sale even though he knew he was going bankrupt -- it was just to get a quick buck before filing bankruptcy. I'm definately one who doesn't like him. I should have realized something was up when he was taking fuckin' forever for everyone else's boots.

I'll make available a bootleg from 1994 live at the Shank Hall...

it's Dweezil Zappa, Mike Keneally, Joe Travers, Bryan Beller and Ahmet Zappa. they play songs from the Z era, from Confessions and also some covers (including a Frank Zappa Medley)

do the search in napster for Dweezil shank or zappa shank or shank hall, either should work...

it will be available only for tonight.

The thing about that is that, by eBay policies, you'd have to buy something from him before you could feedback-slam him. And most of us would rather avoid that blood-curdling proposition, I think!

I, personally, received all the items I ever purchased from Bahr, though generally they would take forever to get to me. (Luckily for me, I had given up buying bootlegs (and gone into trading) by the time he really went nuts on the scamming.) My biggest problem with the guy was that he was the type that, when people started complaining about his business practices, he'd get pissy and give a sob story on the hardships he'd faced in his full-time job of putting discs into a burner and playing video games while they cooked. Always excuses...

    >If we all go over to MP.com it's the same people - so the same talk ! (and >the same SPAM. No ?)

    Not really... For two reasons:

    1) it's not the same people. There're tons of people there who don't subscribe to the 'jam (I'd say most people there don't get the 'jam).

    2) There's no SPAM there.

    >I remember someone trying to compare 'SFAM' and 'V' (was it here ?). >Now 'V' is really cool but no where near 'the best album of all of my 26 >years of existance' and I think that could be IOO (In our opinion) instaed >of the usual IMO. No ? The only thing 'V' has in common with 'SFAM' are >that both are concept albums !

Once again, no... Both are great albums too... V not being nowhere near SFaM? Speak for yourself... I'm definitely in doubt on which is better, maybe it's because I've already listened to SFaM a thousand times so V sounds a bit fresher, but I think they're very close... Hell, lately SFaM hasn't even been my favorite DT cd...

It is Gladiator. I've read of other people having problems on all sorts of different players. (stand alone) I also have to add that Gladiator was the most overrated movie of the year. Mediocre at best. I've had problems with Pulp Fiction, and Cruel Intentions as well on a JVC drive. I'm on my 4th DVD player!(Creative was the first, JVC stand alone second, Sony stand alone, and G4 DVD-ROM now) I will stand by my Sony over any of the others. Can't wait to spin the DT DVD in it.

I had a Pentium 133 (no AMD or MMX) with a Creative drive with a DXR-2 board running to the TV. Worked fine. So I'm sure the 200 Mhz is fine. (I have since moved on to a G4, a much wiser investment)

    >If it were me, I would get a stand-alone DVD player to hook up to the stereo >and TV. >But that's just my opinion.......mileage will vary.

I agree here having done the DXR route. Once you go DVD you won't ever go back and having the computer on to watch a movie is a pain. Fan noise and such. No remote(in my case, not sure of the quality of the new ones.

    Jan-Michael,

I take your point, but it is funny how it plays any other DVD I've tried in it!

I would get a stand alone DVD player if I had a TV, but I use the monitor and a TV card at the moment - hooked up to the stereo ;)

Yeah, my computer has been ailing from a lack of speed for a while now - it's all being upgraded in a couple of months anyway - maybe sheer speed will sort it out! But not before Feb 26th so I hope the damn thing works for that!

    Cheers

I'm just wondering if anyone knows where I can find Kevin Gilbert stuff, other than the official releases (which I have either got or have ordered) Specifically, any well recorded live material, and the original rough mixes of "The Shaming of the True"... I'm told these ARE floating around somewhere....Oh and to be fair, I should warn you I've got very little to trade unfortunately... but if anyone wants to help me out I'll happily tade blanks or come to some other agreement... thanks in advance!

    Hooray,

I just found out I'll be coming to CeBIT in Hannover on March 24th - March 28th, and I was wondering if any other jammers are going to be there, or if there are some nice concerts nearby.

    hi there jammers!

i've just bought a dt bootleg named trial of singles, which i am listening to my first time ... i am amazed by the pretty artwork, similar to the one storm thorgersson designed for fii ... it has the eastwest's logo printed on thr cd , and it seems to be official ... (elektra entertainment group, a diversion of warner ...) another thing i can see is that it says it is a promotional copy, not for sale ....

anyone knows the "story" of this bootleg?? thanks a lot, guys ...

Hey, Anyone have any experience with the TEAC RW-CD22 dual tray burner? They have them at Costco for $269! I know you really get what you pay for with cd burners, but I really want one, but not for $650..

This makes me feel a bit old since I approached this from the other direction having known of Elfman from Oingo Boingo in the '80s and being rather surprised when he moved into doing classical soundtracks. I still find it kind of remarkable that he went from a poppish style rock band (I still enjoy "Dead Man's Party") to writing classical soundtracks. Pretty cool. Danny Elfman's classical soundtrack from the first Batman movie is definitely one of the classics, up there with John Williams stuff IMHO. I still listen to it often.
