    Hi ytsejammers

I thinking about buying one of those diskman that can
    play CDs full of mp3 files. I've seen 3 or 4 sorts,my
first option is EXpanium from Philips, just because is
    the only of well-know brands.
Any suggestions about this or another one are
    wellcome.

    Thanks

    January 17, 2001
In a stunning development, league-leaders Metallica have traded bassist
Jason Newsted and cash to Dream Theater in exchange for John Myung and
two first-round draft picks. Metallica's General Manager, Lars Ulrich,
held a press conference today at 1pm EST, announcing the trade.

"This will bring about a new era for Metallica." Lars also announced
the new album, which will be available for release in 2002, was has been
recorded with lead guitarist Kirk Hammett on bass. Rumors were recently
confirmed regarding a feud between bassist Newsted and Hammett,
regarding the number of solos each member got. Such opportunities are
few and far between in an offense that revolves around Ulrich and
Hetfield, whom many have likened to the classic duo of Elton John and
    Bernie Taupin.

Ulrich says Myung will be a valuable addition to the band's sound. "We
hope he can keep up," Ulrich admitted. "We'll be dropping him into the
thick of things early. Not only will he have to cover all of Jason's
old parts, but he may have to write his own bass lines." Ulrich smiled
as he expounded on the challenge. "I expect the technical aspects of
Metallica will be a challenge to him, but we know he has potential."

In a similar news conference, Dream Theater General Manager Mike Portnoy
explained his view on the trade. "We're looking towards the future.
With the talent level was have currently, a draft pick would have a hard
time fitting into the system." Portnoy smiled as he answered questions
of money concerns. "Yes, the huge sacks of cash were a factor."
Portnoy handed out 100-dollar bills to the group of reporters, and lit a
cigar with a small pile of cash he lit with a gold Zippo. "Smell that
money," he commented moments before the sprinkler system turned on.

In a special outdoor follow-up session, Portnoy explained more of his
plans for Dream Theater's future. "We're looking at other bassists…
certainly the trading isn't finished yet."

Rumors have placed Newsted and James LaBrie in the veteran band Rush for
frontman Geddy Lee, as well as a persistent rumor involving Newsted and
rookie drummer Melody Portnoy going to Yes for Alan Young and Chris
Squire. Sources in the Rush camp deny the rumor saying the band is in
no position to trade, given the new hard salary-cap rules set in place
at the beginning of the season.

"We've been in talks with a number of bands," Portnoy commented. "Until
we win The Grammy, no position is completely safe from trade
    speculation."

Dream Theater's record has been slipping of late. They are fifth in the
Eastern Conference, at just above .500. Metallica is currently at the
top of the Western Conference, with a .745 record. The trade comes as a
small surprise, being only two weeks before the All-Star break. Newsted
currently leads all bassists in voting. Moving to the Eastern
Conference nullifies his chances of joining either team for the All-Star
concert. Second-place vote-getter Flea will probably get the starting
nod, his 8th All-Star appearance in his 17-year career with RHCP.

    News Around the League:
    · Guitarist James Iha re-injured his wrist after attempting to play a
difficult series of 16th notes. The former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist,
now playing for Green Day as a backup, says he will return to form in
    four to six weeks.
    · Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler is announcing his retirement after this
season, citing chronic injury to his vocal cords and a nagging strained
upper lip. He will miss tomorrow's concert against downtown rivals
Boston. Aerosmith holds a 156-2 record against Boston over their
    history.
    · Wide Mouth Mason has been announced as a possible expansion candidate.
The Canadian rockers have said they'll do anything to get into the
league, adding that they've already sent the League their plans for a
new album. League officials declined comment. Other expansion
candidates include Zen Guerilla, and DoubleDrive.

On a related side note, Metallica GM and drummer Lars Ulrich has stated
that his personal training staff has decided he will undergo rigorous
training and long sessions at the drumming cages due to his dismal
    career average of 0.010.

I spent six months in Chicago during the summer. Chicago's train system is
top notch. Terminal for the Blue Line is located in O'Hare, and one for the
    Orange Line is in Midway. Don't look like a sheep/tourist (e.g.: don't
have maps in hand, don't look lost or fearful) and you'll be OK. Best part
    - $1.50 per ride. "El" stations are not typically luggage friendly, though.
You may have to lug yer luggage up a couple flights of stairs.

Cabs will cost you dearly. Expect a ride from O'Hare to downtown to cost
upwards of $30 -- with no traffic.

You would have to be insane to consider driving around Chicago if you aren't
    a native.

I didn't know how rare that thing is. I got it on ebay for $17, shipping
included, from a guy in France. The live tracks were recorded at Birch
Hill during the Fix for '96 mini-tour, when my live-DT-cherry got
popped, and I met Paul Cashman, Wes Foll, Skadz, Mike Ostrich, Augie,
    and many others. Sigh....

Anyway, I'm looking for a generous soul to help out my wife. Due to her
own stupidity/trusting nature, someone made off with all of the
equipment she was wearing. She has a level 33 sorceress on the US East
realm. If there is a kind person on here who doesn't mind cooperating
with us to help replace her gear, we would very much appreciate it.

    Take care,

If you were on the Jam long enough, you may recall the story of Bahr
mentioning his body builder/bouncer friend that would take up for him if
anyone decided to knock on his door ! That was hysterical.

I'm talking about a stand-alone cd burner, not in a computer.
Tray one plays, tray two burns, or input a cassette player or
turntable. I just want to burn some of my old cassettes that
are out-of-print or never came out on cd. I know the sound will
be bad, but at least it will be on disc. There are places like
www.lp2cd.com that charge $20-30 for each one, so I figure it will
pay for itself in no time.
    Trevor

    ---
DUAL tray CD Burner ?? I gotta see this.. So does that mean 1 tray is a
burner and 1 tray is a CD-ROM ? Or TWO burners?? hahah

There are actually much better deals out there for Phillips and Sony and HP burners that are 8x and 10x for a lot less than $269!

Expanium sucks, I'm gonna buy a Classic CM-415, which you can get at circuit city, It has ID3 tag display, plays 320 kbps and VBR and etc etc etc, It's the best one around right now, and for only $100 you can't go wrong. Or you can wait for the RCA one, they say their gonna start selling em in feburary but I can't wait that long, but maybe you can.... it should be alot better that the classic, has a multiline LDC that displays the song titles and directories on the cd, and blah blah blah. Check out http://hardware.dmusic.com for all your mp3-cd player info needs, cool site.

Definitely don't get the expanium, it's first generation and people complain the sound isn't all to great, and that it's too low even at max volume, oh and its like more than a year old, so.....

Most people don't realize that mp3-cd players are the future of mp3 portable devices, I mean, $1 for 10 hours of music? instead of like $60 for not even a quarter of that..... woah. And mp3-cd players don't go over $200 in price, but a normal memory mp3 player, is, well, pretty expensive for such a shitty little thing, only useful for people that jog.

    My 0.03 cents =)

<<I thinking about buying one of those diskman that can play CDs full of mp3 files. I've seen 3 or 4 sorts,my first option is EXpanium from Philips, just because is the only of well-know brands. Any suggestions about this or another one are wellcome.>>

The network repair guys at school have one. Theirs downloads the info off the master onto an internal hard drive, then can burn 2 copies at a time. It'd be just like having 2 burners in your computer, except this is a stand alone unit.

First off I was listening to Spocks Beard V not Symphony X. I need to pick taht up, since evryone else here seems to love it so freakin much.

    Gladiator dvd-love it.

Trial of Singles-Bogie: I downloaded the ones you had one LITS a while ago they sound awesome. I was always wondering where they came from.

On the topic of Metallica- I think if anything he was tired of the shit with Napster, the new direction etc etc...he is the most metal dude out of em all (take the load booklet they are all wearing Gucci stuff, Jason has a Sepultura hood on) I think if anything he's gonna start a new band which will kick ass, or rejoin Flotsam and jetsam.

As for a enw bass player, Wes Claypool is WAY to good for them. Im thinking Duff (ex GNR) He is a boring rock bass player, and would fit in with the new direction of Metallica. I dunno this could be the beginning of the end for metallica. I know for a fact their next release is not gonna sell nearly as much as any of the older ones.

I am gonna miss Jason's metal yells (Creeping Death live)

All good points, excellent points at that. I would just like to add that even after AT LEAST a 1000 listens, I still hear something new every time. I come away with something different with each listen, even after playing the disc to exhaustion. (this is my all time favorite album, the kind of favorite that when asked "if you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take 1 CD which would it be" kinda favorites.)

So let's pose that to the jam...barring obvious 'no batteries or power thing' what would be the CD you take along?

I actually remember reading an interview with jason where he mentioned that if he wasn't in Metallica he'd be in Sepultura. As soon as I read that I knew the writing was on the wall. He is hardcore, especially after hearing the song from Sepultura's last album that Jason played on. I think I know where his heart lies musically.

Sorry if this has been dealt with already, I've not properly read the Jam for about a month. I ended up on Derek's site recently, and it says he's been doing a new album with Steve Lukather and Simon Phillips. Is Christina or someone else still on the Jam and can give me any more details? To be honest, that sounds like a must-buy album; Luke is one of my favourite guitarists (Ernie Ball must surely now rank above Ibanez in terms of artists...They have JP, Luke, Steve Morse and Tony Levin - who are Ibanez stuck with? Satch, Paul Gilbert, the guys from System of a Down and Vai. Well, spank my ass and call me charlie.), and Simon Phillips is the only drummer that I would rank above MP, so the cast is assured to be excellent. And - call me a twat if you wish - I quite like Derek's writing style.

    Anyway, anyone?
