Each guitarist has their own rhythm section. Dave LaRue and MP are with JP. Billy Sheehan and Virgil Donati are with Steve Vai. I don't know who Satch's rhythm section is, but I can bet Stu Hamm is on bass. As far as a setlist for JP, on the home video from beartracks, JP made mention that he was writing material for the G3 tour. So who knows!

OK, the setlist (minus one song I can't remember the name of) for JP's set is: 1. IB3 2. ??? 3. Lost Without You 4. Glasgow Kiss 5. Paradigm Shift/Erotomania

As for the band lineups: John P.: Mike Portnoy (drums), Dave Larue (bass) Vai: Virgil Donati (drums), Billy Sheehan (bass), Mike Keneally (guitar), Dave Weiner (guitar) Satch: Jeff Campetelli (drums), Stu Hamm (bass)

Satch's band plays during the jam at the end.

At LA's show we were also treated to a couple of special guests: Steve Lukather and Paul Gilbert... and Billy Sheehan came out to play 2nd bass. Nothing like 5 guitarists and 2 bassists jamming away on stage. ;-)

    > Hello! Does anybody know if there's > going to be a G3 cd released after this upcoming tour?

AFAIK, there will NOT be a G3 CD from this tour. I spoke with Dave Weiner, one of Vai's guitarists who said that they (which I understand to be everyone) are not taping the shows, so that means no release - at least it doesn't seem to be a part of the plan right now. :-(

    > Also, I read on the Derek website that > Virgil Donati and Billy Sheehan were supposed to be the rhythm section for > G3, so what happened there?

Dave Weiner mentioned that Vai wanted to use Sheehan for this tour, instead of Bynoe, but according to Dave there's no hard feelings or anything - Philip was to be at the LA show on Friday. Virgil did drum for Vai - Mangini is now doing drums for Gary Cherone's new band Tribe of Judah, so between that and his teaching at Berklee, Mangini doesn't have the time.

    > any setlists avail for G3, esp the esteemed Mr. Petrucci?

Same setlist for every night (so far): IBS Damage Control Lost Without You Glasgow Kiss Paradigm Shift (w/ excerpt of Erotomania)

IBS, Damage Control and Glasgow Kiss are new tracks. Although John says that all the tracks played are new "except this one", Lost Without You was actually played by John as his solo piece during the European Awake tour in early 95. Oddly enough, only Derek accompanied him on keys - this time around Dave LaRue and MP accompany him! :-)

    > I haven't seen the show yet, so I'm not sure (going to go see it in > Boston, though, woohoo!), but I'm assuming he means that when all three > are playing together, Mike and Dave are the rhythm section?

Nope the rhythm section for the jam is always Satriani's backing band, but this time around they included Billy Sheehan on "second bass" and vocals!

PS I plan on writing up a bunch of stuff about the shows I went to (Anaheim, San Diego, LA) as well as some news I got from MP himself with regards to the new one, once I get the time.

    Hey all!

I had the opportunity to see the Anaheim, San Diego and LA G3 shows last week and I must say that you who are still waiting to see the shows are in for a treat!

The setlists for all three shows (as I understand all the shows will be) had the same setlists, except for Little Wing being dropped in favor of I'm Going Down during the jam section of the LA show.

I dunno what the setlists for Satriani and Vai are as I'm not as familiar with all their stuff, but the setlist for Petrucci's set is: IBS Damage Control Lost Without You Glasgow Kiss Paradigm Shift (w/ excerpt of Erotomania)

JP played a 7 string for IBS and played a 6-string for the remaining tracks. Dave played a 5-string bass and MP played a scaled down drum kit consisting made from his red (Japanese) monster. This kit was *not* his LTE or TA set ups - I dunno all the specs, but I noticed he a large tom to his left and a much smaller tom to his right. Next to the small tom was 2 octobons. And he was playing with one bass drum again. Other than that, I dunno what else was in the set up.

I focused mostly on JP, so most of my commentary will be on him, tho there's a few things to note about Vai and Satch.

For starters, in Anaheim, JP looked stiff - very much out of his element. You could see this to some degree during his set, but it became extrememly evident during the jam part of the show. While Satch and Vai were very fluid, JP seemed to struggle a bit and his solos weren't as polished as the others. It was funny as I watched JP's expressions while Vai and Satch soloed and it seemed like JP focused more on Satch than Vai - almost like he was nervous around Vai and was trying to avoid making eye contact with him (perhaps because Vai's a much larger influence than Satch on JP?). When Vai soloed, JP hung with Satch and chit chatted with him, not really looking at Vai at all. When Satch soloed, JP and Vai stood together, but JP was watching Satch and Vai (from his body language) seemed to be trying to take JP under his wing so-to-speak...really hard to describe in words...almost kinda like he was trying to point him in some directions as Vai no doubt picked up on JP's nervousness.

But the following night (San Diego) JP seemed to have relaxed a bit as I noticed a marked difference in his performance on both during his set, but especially during the jam session. He seemed to be much more fluid, relaxed and easy going. He seemed to groove to the music more and he wore shades during the jam, as did Satch and Vai. Mike Kizer and I joked that "it must be the shades" that got JP to mellow out as he wore them during the jam in LA too and again was more fluid in his performance.

Speaking of LA, as I'm sure has been posted already, Paul Gilbert and Steve Lukather joined Satch, Vai and JP for the jam session. Performance wise, I think the San Diego show was better than the LA show, but the jam session with the extra two guitarists made it more memorable. Paul came out in bright lime green pants with sequins and a hot pink Ibanez guitar (body style similar to a Gibson Explorer) and no shirt. With his hair cut short now, Paul looked like a little 15 year old kid - and he pretty much acted like one too, screwing around most of the time - except for when it was his turn to solo. He definitely stole the spotlight away from Vai in terms of visuals!! :-) Supposedly Steve Lukather didn't know how to play Little Wing, so they instead played I'm Going Down - dunno how true that is - I'm wondering if they might've switched the tracks to keep the jam part of the show the same length (obviously with two more guitarists taking their turns soloing, the jam session would automatically be longer). Dave Weiner had mentioned that David St. Hubbins (AKA Michael McKean of Spinal Tap) was also supposed to be a part of the jam, but he never showed - dunno why.

As to Satch and Vai's performances...Vai's tongue-playing skills were certainly not up to par in LA and by the third show, I thought that his show was a little "fake" feeling as I saw the same exact tricks, costume changes(!), etc. each night including his greetings to the audience. Don't get me wrong - his set was by far the most entertaining and most impressive (sacreligious being a DT fan, I know!) but it was a little turn off that it all felt so "rehearsed." At any rate you guys *will* be impressed - Billy's on stage antics and playing, Mike Keneally's antics and doubling of some of Vai's solos, and Virgil's chops also make for a jaw-dropping experience.

Can't say much about Satch other than it was weird to hear a non-techno version of Devil's Slide as I had not seen the Engines of Creation tour. Satch's performance were pretty much the most solid of the three each night. I especially would've liked to have seen some variety from night to night in Satch's set, even more than Vai, bu oh well - beggars can't be choosers! :-)

At any rate, I'll post some info I got from MP within the next day or two (once I have the time to write more).

    That's it for now.

    Hey all!

Besides having gotten to see the G3 shows in southern CA, I also met up wit h MP and had the opportunity to once again blitz him with as many questions a s I possibly could think of at that time (which I hope he doesn't mind!)

Anyway, here's what he shared with me: There were 6 songs recorded for the new one.

All of the material recorded will not fit on one CD.

The band did not finish recording having any lyrics written - that is what the guys are to do during this break. Lyrics once again will be mostly MP & JP - with a possible lyric by JM and JLB (same general ratio as FII & SFAM)

JP and MP will have to do their lyric writing while on the road with G3 as literally the day after the G3 tour ends (in Florida), the band will be heading back into the studio to record the vocals and do some more overdubs/touch ups for 3 weeks.

When asked for a what direction the new one is going into, MP said he hates to give descriptions and pigeon-hole something, but if he *had* to LOOSELY describe it as something, it would be a cross between Awake and LTE.

He also mentioned that 2 of the tracks were more experimental, tho he did not elaborate in what ways.

A TA tour is being planned for Nov of this year for Europe (no US dates).

There will *not* be any "Home for the Holidays" shows this year - the band will be taking a break, spending time with their families before....

DT's new album is to be released in January 2002 with a tour starting in Europe in January or February.=A0 =A0 =A0=A0 Side note: no MP at NAMM in 2002=A0 :-(

If there will be more than one DT show played in your area, go to ALL of them - MP has some killer ideas for setlists for the next tour (which he di d NOT share with me) and told me specifically that you will want to go see multiple shows on the tour.

The chances of WDADU ever getting properly remixed are zero as the master tapes are owned by some other label and the overall interest in the album wouldn't warrant the money spent doing to (only die-hards would be interested). When asked if he thought a petition might do any good, he didn't think so.=A0 :-(

I asked if there was any possiblity that the Majesty demos might get properly remixed for DT's official boot series to which he said that it's a possiblity. I also asked if they might release the original mixes on the same CD (or package - ala Deep Purple's remasters) which he again said is a possibility.

Among the things he has in mind to release for the official boots, he plans on releasing stuff like the demos from the albums (FII and Awake were mentioned but I think it might include the other CDs as well), making of CD s such as for SFaM (and I think he said I&W), full live concerts (whole shows ) and tour highlights (like the 2000 Fan Club CD).

That's about all I can think of at the moment - if I think of anything else , I'll post it for you all!

    Scott

??? A few months ago they had 5 songs (55 minutes) recorded. So I guess that means song 6 is longer than ACoS, eh?

    > A TA tour is being planned for Nov of this year for Europe (no US > dates).

    YES! :)

    YES!!! 8)

It was about time! I wasn't going to see multiple shows on the next tour if not for this annoucement. I could imagine a setlist like

    - Song 1 (from the new album) - I&W long track (TTT, Metropolis or LtL - changing all the time) - Song 2 - Heavier, shorter track (i.e. CIAW, Lie, JLMB - again different every night) etc ...

I suppose we're gonna have to wait another ten years until that album is regarded "classic enough" for a remix/remaster.

Thank God. I mean I doubt if I can attend two shows from where I live, but it makes bootlegs so much more unique, and I don't to worry about fighting the temptation of reading setlists and spoiling it for myself. and it's just fun reading the different sets and seeing what you missed.

    good questions by the way

A couple of weeks ago, people were recommending the film Requiem For A Dream. Well, I dutifully bought the DVD (the region 1 unrated version).

It disturbed me. It made me feel quite ill. I'm not even sure if I enjoyed it or not. It was certainly powerful.

    Jennifer Connelly naked. Ooh. :-)

Someone remind me of the differences between the rated and unrated versions?

And where are the easter eggs? There's another one of those colour-bar TV setup things, which I'm sure must be an easter egg, but letting it run to the end produces nothing.

While browsing DVD's the other day, I ran across a live DVD of Eric Burdon and the New Animals. Turns out that the "New Animals" include Dave Meros AND Neil Morse of Spock's Beard. I had heard about Meros touring with Eric Burdon, but I hadn't heard about this live DVD, or that it included Neil.

Has anyone seen this DVD? How is it?

p.s. Yeah, I know that it's classic rock and not prog. I saw Eric Burdon several years ago, and it was a pretty good show. (He was the headliner at a festival in San Jose. The opening Puppet show was earlier in the day, right before the local children's dance class act and the Mariachi band...)
