Oh well, Arjen's songwriting and musical abilities are without any doubt
symply amazing. Musically, I like both Universal Migrators equally. If
only he'd write an intelligent story without cheesy lyrics or cliches the
size MP's drulkit for a change. I mean: 'to the quaaasaaaar...'. WTF? Even
    Star Trek is better.

So don't mind the lyrics, the music is splendid.

    >MOST magazines are subsidized by the ad buyers.

Obviously, you're not going to get huge companies (or shitty ones that have
to use E-mail spam as ther prime outreach tool for that matter), but I'll
be tons of record-related companies would like the target-audience idea in
advertising in a fanzine. Dunno about all of you, but I actually *like* to
see on-target advertising. It's how quality metalmags like Promethean
Crusade can only charge $10 a year -- there's ads from just about every
metal label you can think of, and I read practically every one of them.

    >Besides, just out of curiosity, what do other fanclubs offer and at what
    >price?

I'm a member of the Flower Kings fanclub, World of Adventures, and the
current rate is $30/year. For that, you get six fanzines, all of them of
the fairly low-budget, non-glossy variety (there aren't nearly as many
members as ToD), yet they are very informative, generally speaking. Of
course, a lot of this content is generally repeated on their website
[*]. Roine typically has some sort of "state of the band" column, and
occasionally, a fanzine is signed by a band member. We get an exclusive
CD, which, assuming present trends hold up, consists of b-sides, and,
unlike DT, new material composed especially for said CD. Those guys are a
(good)-music-producing machine, so it's no trouble for 'em, I
guess. Overall, I'd say I'm satisfied that I'm getting my money's worth.

just a random magazine subscription note.. (nope, no DT content in this
    post.. sorry)

if you're looking for the best subscription rate always rip out a
subscription card (also called insert cards) from a newsstand issue..
instead of (for example) from your friend who subscribes to that magazine..
also, don't renew when the magazine starts sending you renewal notices
(unless you REALLY like the magazine and cannot risk missing an issue)
because the renewal rates are much higher than the original rate you
subscribed at. like if you paid $9.99 from an insert card, the magazine
will most likely try to renew you at $19.95 the first year... and $24.95
    the second.year....

it's all about getting the customers to renew at a much higher rate.

why yes, i do work in the terribly exciting world of magazines.. weee. ;-)

Also most ad buyers need to know how many subscribers the publication has,
what the average type of person the subscriber is (ie. age, income, hobbies,
you know, the usual demographics)... and so on and so on...

Thank you! Now if there was someone who was able to spend ALL their time
dedicated to doing this fanzine, then it could happen once a month, but
frankly I don't think that there would be enough "news" to fill it up every
month. Every other month, perhaps. I actually wouldn't mind seeing DT hire
someone who could make the fanzine a priority (with all the others working
as assistants when they can) so that it would be more up-to-date, but I
doubt that will happen as it's not like DT has as much money to spend as
some of these larger bands do, that have classier fanzines.

In regards to the price, I can appreciate what has been said about $6+ being
expensive for a single issue of the fanzine (of dated material). But as was
mentioned, all the big publications sell TONs of ad space which pays for a
good portion of the magazines that you can subscribe to for $15-$20. Being
in the printing industry, I can assure you it is NOT as cheap as you might
think to print a ~32 page magazine without ANY sponsorship, let alone one
that has a small print-run! The more issues you print, the cheaper each
    issue is.

And in regards to the price increase, I don't know what the Dutch fan club
was charging for a subscription to ToD before becoming the official fanzine,
but one reason why the official fan club membership was cheaper was because
of the fanzine. Images and Words (the fanzine), while great, was bare bones!
The paper it was printed on was cheaper than what ToD is printed on; but
even more importantly ToD is in 4 color, which is gonna cost significantly
more than the 1 color printing that I&W had.

I looked into metallica's once. The big head, filthy rich fuckers want
something like $40 to join, and they do offer a special fan club CD once a
year. But to get it you have to 1. be in the fan club and 2. fork over
    another $40-$50 to buy it.
So I guess when you look at it that way, yes we are spoiled.

I have "The Dark Saga," and I love it. It is a Spawn concept album. I
didn't even keep up with the comic, but I know just enough to enjoy the CD.
I'm not a musician so I can't review it for you in that aspect, but the
music ranges from moderately heavy to heavy. It reminds me of Sonata
Arctica, mixing the slow in with the fast and heavy. And I love the lead
    singers voice.

I also have their first CD, didn't enjoy that one at all. Different singer
    and style.

So is the Monster CD out? That concept sounded really cool... anybody have
    it if it is?

I have their last studio album, "Something Wicked This Way Comes", which is
    a great
heavy metal cd. Very melodic in sections, somewhat "maidenish" but heavier!
Matt Barlow has a great, dynamic voice. Perfect for metal.
Their live cd "Alive In Athens" is guess what?? A TRIPLE live cd and it's
    awesome too!
I haven't heard anything from the new album yet, reviews have been positive
    though.

They slowed down after Burnt Offerings.Main man, rythm guitarist
John Schaffer claimed he's more mature in his writing and he doesn't
try to crank so many riffs in his songs.(why do all the bands i like have to
    slow down..)
That's why i don't like Dark Saga and Something Wicked as much as
    their older stuff.
I'd definately suggest "Days of Purgatory".It's a double cd with pre-Dark
    Saga
songs, and the new singer in all of them.I don't know if the rest of the
    instruments
were re-recorded.And for those of you that haven'y heard anything from the
    old stuff
just check out one single song."Travel in Stygian"(from the purgatory
cd even though the old vocalist is not bad here either).
I can't say they're very original at what they do but they're really
    passionate.
That's why "Alive in Athens",the triple cd ,is a great choice to get into
    them.
Covers their whole discography up till Monster. At a tempting price too.

    enjoy

    Got my G3 Tix! WooHooo!

Wow, these are pricey. About $43 bucks plus $8 Ticket Bastard service charge = $51ea.! :(

I was on my way home from a business trip and calling the Ticktet Bastard from a pay phone in Dallas while waiting for my connection back to Balt. I called exactly at noon ET which is when TB said tix would go on sale. I knew the box office at the Warner would already be open so I had no illusions about being in the first 5 rows :(

Bummer about the advance I-Net sales I wish I had known. But I still did OK - Row N (15th), right side of Center Orchestra!

If JP takes his usual Stage Left position I will be psyched :) Check that, I'm AM psyched! This is guitarists nirvana!

Any old Queesryche fans out there heard the Spys4Darwin recordings? It's a Chris DeGarmo project, with the rhythm section from Alice In Chains, and singer from Sponge.

Anybody have a review for us?

    Here's their website BTW:
