I have Iced Earth's newest "Horrow Show." I'm not sure if it's out
world-wide, yet. I think it's official release is June 26th or so. I got
the limited edition through Alta Mira (it has a bonus disc with a cover of
Iron Maiden's "Transylvania" and a 68 minute interview with John Schaffer
(guitarist of Iced Earth)). I've only had the chance to listen to it once
so far, so I can by no stretch of the imagination provide an accurate
description of the CD. But from what I remember, it was
good...heavy..has a couple nine minute "epic" tracks.

Well, one practical way we could all help to make the spam less irritating
would be to increase the number of list-relevant posts we make. The last
couple of Jams have actually contained some relevant content, even if it was
old news to me - there used to be a time, when you'd hear things first on
the Jam :-(
As for Skadz, when I dared to complain, it was hinted to me that he was
somewhat occupied with family matters. Anyone know if this is the case?
because sometimes it might be useful to have a deputy do those tiresome
list-admin things - I'm sure that the necessary expertise exists on the
list.

Yeah - Schism is cool - I guess you'll do better with the setlist
on Saturday night :-) I still haven't bought 'V' yet or a ticket

I'm seeing Judas Priest and Savatage in Glasgow on Wednesday, the same bands in London on Friday, and SB in London on Saturday.
Paul will be at both of the London gigs. You met him at the whatever-it-was-called festival thing in April.

That guy scares me. I first took notice of him when I was listening to Track 4 on 'Obsolete,' when it says "I will tear your mind away" and there's this huge (although short) double-bass drum roll. Then I started listening to "Zero Signal" a lot. He is definitely one of the best drummers I've ever heard.

He is a machine with his feet, very awesome... but IMO (other drummers may comment) he is nothing special aside from that and definately not one of the best drummers... one of the best double bass in the business yes, but from the torso up, he is nothing IMO...

If any of you remember, the DTIFC says somewhere that you get, for $25 a year, 4 fanzines and "any other promotional material that the band wishes to send out" or something like that. In other words, the band could (if they so chose) send us Christmas CDs with rare material (like awesome Jordan Rudess techno solos:), home videos of what they're doing in the studio, posters, CDs of their progress on the new album with every newsletter, or anything else that they want to give us. The fact that they have only been doing the Christmas CDs the past few years does not mean that that is all they CAN do, or that they will not put more stuff in them in the future. I, for one, will probably renew my subscription on the off-chance that I may end up with something truly spectacular as a gift from the band. And everyone else that doesn't resubscribe will undoubtably complain when they don't get it. Somebody call a waaaaaaaaaambulance.

I say:
Well, this kinda ties in with the ancient Napster argument that I will NOT revive. Anytime you "rip off" the bands, you are in fact screwing yourself and all the other fans. How, you might ask? Well, it just kinda hit me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but some bands produce themselves, right? And those bands have total (or at least near-total) creative control, correct? Well, if a band can't afford to produce themselves, then they go to, say, Beartracks studios and let someone else take over control of their albums. So when a band like DT can't afford to have complete control over their albums due to the money they lose when people download their albums instead of buying them, we end up with albums like the studio version of 'Falling Into Infinity' instead of the awesome album it should have been, since the producers want something that will feel more "mainstream." If all you complainers want DT to be more original and put out more experimental music, then consider actually PURCHASING some of their stuff! I guess this could tie into the 3CD Live thing, too. Anyway, this all makes sense to me...

Boy, you're stupid. Creative control is determined by label pressure, not whether or not a band can afford to produce themselves. Why do you think you need money to produce yourself, anyway? If the label is paying for the studio/production costs either way (or advancing you the money to recoup out of your sales, more exactly), the only effect hiring a producer has financially is that a bigger chunk of change gets "recouped" out of your paycheck later on. You have to pay producers, remember?
Sheesh. That was the lamest anti-"pirating" argument I've heard yet.

Are you by chance a SymX fan? If so, have you noticed that TDWOT, from 1997, has a MUCH, MUCH better sound quality than TIO, released a year later? I personally would not have bought TDWOT if I had heard TIO first, because it sounds like an early-80's metal album, it's really retro-sounding. TDWOT, however, sounds very up-to-date, I would say as good as 'V.'

But doesn't the record label front the money for tours, merchandising, and such? That would be an awful lot of money DT would need to say 'later' to the record company. They would probably tour less.
I for one would pay $20 for a new CD straight off their website if all the $$ is going to the band, as opposed to $15 to a record store or on-line store, where the record label gets the $$$.
Sorta like the JP/JR "evening" CD.
