My first exposure to DT was a couple years ago. I'd read about Petrucci
in guitar mags a few times, and I think he got named best rock guitarist
in the GW reader's poll. Anyways, I met a guy at school, who I've since
become pretty good friends with, who was a pretty serious shredder and
really turned me on to DT and other shred-like stuff. I remember the
first time I heard Passion & Warfare - we were in his car and happened to
be driving by the mall. I thought that album was so cool, I asked him to
stop at the mall so I could get it.

Like somebody else mentioned, I'm gonna (try to) make DT my first DVD - I
    just got a DVD-rom, too.

    Ah yeah!

Robert, there's been a ton of posts about ProgPower over on the Symphony X

What's the sound quality like. Personally, I thought the sound on the mp.com

Now that's hilarious! :-) You should go back and listen
more carefully to "She's a Dancer" by Crack the Sky now....

My first CD was "William Tell & other Favorite Overtures"
which I bought in 1987 in college before I had a CD player. I
remember playing "William Tell" (the Lone Ranger theme section) on my
roommate's CD player at ridiculous volumes so that the people on the
street would be looking up at our room in confusion. :-) I think
our neighbors must have really hated us. That CD has another of my
favorite classical overtures too, "Poet and Peasant" by Franz von Suppe.
Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" CD was another early purchase. That's
still one of the best sounding CDs ever, IMHO. Very crisp and clean.
I can't remember what my first tape was, but I remember
my first order from Columbia House included Judas Priest's "Screaming
for Vengeance" probably around 1982. "Electric Eye" is still a great
    song. :)
My first music purchase, probably when I was about 9 was
a 45 record (sigh) of "The Entertainer" (theme song from the movie "The
Sting"). Not long after that I got ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down" on 45 too.

Yup. Back in January of 1993 a friend of mine at work who knew
I was into bands like Yes, said "Hey, you've got to listen to this."
He proceeded to play Metropolis part 1 and I was blown away, especially
when it came to the instrumental section. I couldn't believe a '90s
band was playing that kind of music! It was only a few weeks later when
we caught a DT show at Hammerjacks in Baltimore and I joined the Ytsejam
    list.

ahhh, but which MSG lineup would you be referring to? because it my
understanding is correct, schenker doesn't ever sing (except maybe backup,
but i'm not even sure of that). he's had quite a few singers come & go,
but my two favorites would have to be robin mccauley (which temporarily
changed the band name to mccauley-schenker group) and kelly keeling from
the most recent studio MSG album "unforgiven". different sound (a little
darker than normal), but still outstanding work all around. plus,
keeling's work as the lead singer for baton rouge was fantastic. he used
his full range on those records, unlike the more confined range he sang in
on the "unforgiven" record. i can't remember the earlier singers' names
for MSG, but i don't particularly care for any of them. which one's did
you hear that turned you off to them? just curious, plus this is probably
a much longer response than you ever expected, but maybe it'll help to
clue a few others that haven't had the opportunity to hear about schenker
or MSG a chance to check some stuff out. who knows?

The shameful thing is that the very first time I ever saw a pic of Motley
Crue back in '84 (Shout At The Devil period, I was 13 at the time) I thought
3 of them were chicks! Mick Mars I wasn't sure what the hell he was, human,
alien?? Well anyway, I thought Tommy Lee was a pretty good looking chick! I
was repulsed when I later realised that it was actually a guy!

The Dixie Chicks suck. Nothing bugs me more than that psychotic looking one
who looks just looks flat out evil and is going to sprout blood-sucking
tentacles and happily flay your flesh from your body while feeding your
speen to her pet imps. Or something.

I really hate the Dixie Chicks. Nothing shows our nation's character more
than the song "Goodbye Earl" and how millions of estrogen-deficient women
clogged the rooms in which the pathetic Alarm Clock radio was scratching it
out and they would laugh and hoot and croon about what senseless pigs men
    are. Women suck.

    Hi!

God I love these opinion polls! =3D) I bought my first CD the same day I got my first CD player, it was back=

in year 1994 and the album was Helloween's Master Of The Rings and I still consider it as one of the best albums (my personal number one f= avorite is still Metropolis Part 2).

My newest CD is Children Of Bodom's Hatebreeder (bought it last week) ,= I think it's even better than Follow The Reaper. By the way today on Finnish TV1 there st= arts a new tv series: Siamin tyt=F6t (in English: Siamese girls?? =3D) ) and it's = about live role playing and on the main role there is Jaska Raatikainen -the drummer of Childre= n Of Bodom. =3D)

Yup Hatebreeder is a hell of a good album, Reaper is also very good. As for the TV series I have also heard the score and music for it has been done by Timo Tolkki.

Cool - great taste man (hence the imminenet DT interest)!

my most embarrasing (amongst a whole host of 80 dance crap) is 'Ted Heath Sings' (Ted Heath being an old UK politician) that I am convinced my old man smuggled into my vinyl collection to embarrass me should anyone look through it! He's a tw*t! I remember bringin girls back home to my folks house way back when and he would have put flyers on my wall from places of real mediocre interest such as 'try your hand at spinning wool' or 'why not have a go at west country brass rubbing' even one about 'bat watching' or summat. Anyone else have doolally parents?

My most recent cds (yesterday) were remasters of Steely Dans 'Cant buy a Thrill' and 'The Royal Scam' along with Tori's 'Little Earthquakes' and King Crimsons 'In the Court Of The Crimson King'

My first DT experience was when a friend of mine played the beginning of "Under a Glass Moon" for me. I loved the way Mike played the double bass part on that song, and new these guys were different, but I just wasn't ready for them yet. Several years pass, and I was tired of the music I was listening to. In a record store I say to another friend,"I want something heavy, but musical and intelligent". He says "why don't you try Dream Theater?" So I look and I see ACOS. I say to myself, well I like all the cover tunes, so if I don't like this 25 minute song, it'll be ok. Well, I was blown away, and quickly bought all the albums I could find! Sorry to bore you all, just wanted to share.

Hey Al, good meeting ya at progPower... Another reason Ray isn't too happy with the vocals is that he said that he was sick during the taping and wasn't quite 100% vocal-wise.

I don't write in much, but I thought this was actually interesting to pop into, since most of the time I just delete them without reading. (the Napster thing was just getting too boring, same old same old!!)

    With the first's you have some variety... and now I feel it's my turn (hope I don't show my age too badly);

vinyl - Deep Purple, purple passages tape - Deep Purple, Burn concert - Journey, Escape tour at Pine Knob, MI CD's - ('86) Toto, fahrenheit and Richard Marx (I was married) DT - Images and Words tape (no CD player in my car, yet) DT Show - (sorry it took so long) 8/00 Web Theater, Phoenix The only DT album I don't have is WDADU, I have heard the vocals and was not impressed. imo

Recent CD's - Vinnie Moore (3 of them, guitarist extrodinare) and Dave Uhrich, fret'notised (Chicago's guitarist extrodinare)

For those Napster fans - Godsmack - whatever. FYI, at the time of release I was trying to decide between Queensryche, Empire and Metallica, Black. I chose Queensryche and I am sooooo glad, it's still awsome. "Metallica BAAADD!!" I still turn them off the radio.

Couple of CD's I am a little ashamed of liking (or at the time); Garth Brooks, no fences; Yanni and Kenny G.

Can't wait for DT and Rush to get out something new. Enough for now. Thanks for watching!! Goodnight...

I got a kick out of the format, so I'll contribute on this one.

Vinyl - Minipops. Some weird record of kids singing hit songs.. I remember running to the store to get this and I wore the damn thing out.. Tape - Huey Lewis & the News. Sports. There may have been some before this that i bought for myself, but I remember buying this and wearing it out. CD - Already said this one, no need to revisit that. Concert - Club MTV. Uggh, Information Society, Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, Tone Loc, Was not Was... DT - Hampton Beach, 8/98 *drool* Last CD I bought was Stratovarious:visions

Next CD purchases will be Symphony X, coven 13, labyrinth, buckethead: monsters and robots, and probably something from avantasia and the rudess petrucci cd.
