I'm in for a severe head beating tomorrow night... a concert with Nine, =
Nasum and with The Haunted as main act.=20
If I can stand the first 2 groups is the question, I only heard like 3 =
tracks with Nasum (and was far from impressed, I'll probably be in a bar =
drinking during their gig) and never heard anything with Nine.=20
The Haunted may not be the most tallented group in the world, but it =
will be a total frency in the audience... a tiny club filled with =
    maniacs.=20

I'm counting on that I won't be able to listen to anything heavier than =
Spyro Gyra for like a week after this :)

    should I start?

It's fairly difficult to pick out a start point for exploring Zappa's mammoth catalog. Strictly Commercial offers a peak at Zappa's work, however, it misses a lot of Zappa's best work (you can't take the best of 60+ CD's and squeeze it onto one CD. I recomend Hot Rats (very guitar jam oriented), Over-nite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy and Elsewhere (live, many of the musical passages on this album are very complex...a combination of rock and jazz), One Size Fits All, Joe's Garage (A great double album about sex, drugs, and rock n' roll and censorship), and for people who like instrumental guitar stuff, the triple disc set Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar is awsome. All of the albums share some similarities; they all have phenomenal musicianship and almost all of them have humerous themes throughout. I have heard all of Zappa's regular release and own 48 of them, and I'll tell you it takes forever to digest some of his songs (especially the classical stuff). Good luck, and I hope my incoherent rambling helped.

    Dennis Miller

PS...I'm the other Dennis Miller, who thinks Steely Dan deserved album of the year because it was superior to the other crap nominated...not because 50-year olds don't know how to use napster...the other Dennis Miller needs to stop talking...he's making me look bad...;)

I heard a tune by Children of Bodom on the radio Sunday night (KUPD RULES) - I thought they were pretty damn cool. Any suggestions on which album I should pick up and where I should get it?

As a long-time Zappa aficionado, I suppose I can give you some recommendations broken down by style. It's very difficult to make suggestions due to the sheer volume and quality of the material. but I'll try.

For fusion-esque stuff try Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar or Make a Jazz Noise Here. The latter album stars Mr. Steve Vai. The former is all instrumental with some insanely sick drumming by Vinnie Colaiuta.

For classical, you should definitely start with The Yellow Shark, as G-Spot Tornado will knock you on your ass.

His early stuff is a mix of pop, jazz, and rock. Try out Just Another Band from LA or Hot Rats. Hot Rats is mostly instrumental, while JABFLA is fairly vocal oriented and contains some his funniest lyrics and vocal melodies.

Lastly, for a good mix of all things Zappa, Joe's Garage is the way to go. Incredibly funny, stellar musicianship, off-time mania (just try to figure out some of the stuff on the second half...well nigh impossible), and good songwriting....check out Catholic Girls.

Zappa albums are markedly dissimilar. If you don't like one, don't give up on him. Try something in another style...I can almost guarantee you'll find something you'll love. Then you'll go back to that one you didn't like, and you'll like that too. It's what happened to me (I hated You Are What You Is, ended up hearing and loving You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol 1, and then ended up loving YAWYI a few years later).

I don't like best of compilations, so my suggestion would be Joe's Garage for the first album. It was my first Zappa album and I was 9 or so when I heard it. Joe's is a good album cause it shows the humor side, then the musical side, then the awesome soloing that Frank did like on "Shut up and play yer guitar". The story is hilarious also, so read the liner notes!

    Hey!

[Graham wrote] That wouldn't happen to be the 6 song set at Tavastia Club in Helsinki, would it :) ? Would you happen to have the exact date ? ----------- Actually, no it wasn't the Tavastia gig :) I was wrong about the year, it was 98 not 97 (hell, did the band even exist in early 97?). I saw them at the Lepakko on January 9th, 1998. I think it was their 2nd show ever. I remember it well because I went to two separate gigs at two separate venues the same night :) I got to meet NW backstage (they were rather shocked to have fans asking for autographs) and if I remember correctly, Mape got YOU a signed promo pic that night... :)

Anyway, the Tavastia gig you're talking about was on February 13, 1998. I was in Stockholm at the time but I've marked the gig in my calendar nevertheless...

Tanja.... having a blast reading an old calendar... :)
