SAVATAGE ANNOUNCES NEW SINGER AND GUITARIST
NEW YORK/TAMPA, Fla. - Symphonic Rock band Savatage, which recorded its n=
ew
album Poets & Madmen as a quartet, has returned to a six-piece with the
announcement of a new vocalist and second guitarist.
Florida musician Damond Jiniya joins the group as the new vocalist. "We
found Damond by accident at a mutual friend=92s house near my hometown in
Florida," Oliva said. "When he opened his mouth to sing, we were all blow=
n
away." Former vocalist Zak Stevens left Savatage due to family commitment=
s
just prior to the recording of Poets & Madmen.
Jack Frost will take on the duties of second guitarist, replacing Al
Pitrelli, who now plays in Megadeth. Frost=92s resume includes Seven Witc=
hes,
Bronx Casket Co., Speeed, and Metalium. "We=92ve been friends with Jack F=

for years and always felt that we had great chemistry," said founding mem=
ber
Jon Oliva. "So, when Al left, we thought he was perfect for the direction=

Steve is working on the live CD as we speak. It isn't a complete live show,
but a collection of live songs that he wrote and performed for some of the
different countries he visited on the Ultra Zone tour. There is a note from
Steve on his website, and he talks a little about some of the songs on the
upcoming cd. For those of you who are too lazy to navigate through vai.com,
here's where that note is. ;-)

Dude, Vai told this on every show of the tour, here in Bulgaria also. And
the whole thing was filmed here too. And i have a soundboard bootleg from
Holland and there he tells the audience the same. So I assume the live album
will be bits from several shows, not from one specific event.

I would start out with Dead Winter Dead. (And not
just 'cause it was my first, hehe) This is a
fantastic album and gives a good indication of where
Savatage are now, musically - of course I haven't
heard the new one, Poets & Madmen, which has been
called a "change." Then work your way backwards and
forwards. I really enjoyed Handful of Rain, but that
is a transition album really, from the more crunchy
with an edge early days to the melodic focus and
harmonies and more polished sound found on later CDs.

Wake of Magellan is great too, but as far as I'm
concerned nothing beats Dead Winter Dead *as an
album*. Okay, so Streets is fantastic as well - if
you want a great example of the more old-school sound
(there's been much change of personnel) check that out
also.

Hrm, how could you say the *vocals* are so much the
same? As far as I'm concerned, Andy Kuntz sounds
nothing like LaBrie at all; the most you can say is
that they both sing "progmetal vocallines." Totally
different qualities of voice. I just listened to Far
Off Grace again the other day and was struck by the
soft quality of Kuntz's voice.. amazing.
