Well, from what I've heard so far (LTE 1 and 2, SFaM, Jordan's "Listen") I
don't think Jordan has a dark, somber musical bone in his body. Musically,
he's amazingly talented, but he seems a bit limited in his emotional
spectrum in terms of composition.

Hey, I got to read for the part of the guy opposite Nikki Cox in her new
show! Sure, I was thinking "But it's the WB..." but then I thought, "But
it's nikki cox!" and that ened that dilemma. Like it really mattered, my
chances of getting that part were negative 1 in a zillion and what they
ended up figuring out they were loooking for certainly wasn't me,
anyway.

>It's good to see some people leaping to the defense of this potentially
fine CD.
I don't even think it even needs a defense. MP himself would probably
disagree, but so what? It was an excellent album. Nothing approaches
awake, and it's no M2 of course, but I tend to derive about equal
enjoyment from this and Images. I mean, New Millenium is great, LiTS is
great, Trial is ridiculously fucking good, Hell's Kitchen is simply fab.
Hollow Years, Anna Lee, and TAMP are pretty good for what they are.
Would I have preferred Speak to Me over any of those last three? of
course! I also would have liked to see To Live Forever(a PHENOMENAL
song) replace The Silent Man. Hey! What're ya gonna do? One way or
another, DT albums always have some slow shit on them that no one likes.
Suck it up! FII kicked ass. And btw, I really do prefer derek to jordan.

I saw on the last jam where someone said that Eve was the best DT instrumental. Don't get me wrong, I like Eve, but if you think thats their best instrumental, why the hell do you listen to DT?????? Just listen to St. Elmo's Fire if thats what you like. I love DT BECAUSE they do crazy instrumentals and crazy parts because not many bands do that nowadays.

Hey Jammers, Just registering my opinions on a couple of recent topics. First Radiohead is the shit ! Being a huge Pink Floyd fan and part time electronic listener I think RH is quite innovative. I also dig U2, I find a lot of their music to be spiritual, not just political. Rattle and Hum is still one of my fav home videos. However Rage against the machine doesn't impress me much ( except for Mr. Morello, who reminds me of Hendrix in an experimental sort of way ) I just can't get past the " repeat 2 lines 15 times and call it political lyrics " shit that the singer is so fond of ( can't think of his name, LaRoche ?) No matter the inspiration for a new album since I'm sure it will be another masterpiece, I would just like to hear some boundary pushing progressive music as opposed to Awake 2 or FII 2 or I&W 2 for that matter. Not that DTs previous offerings didn't push boundaries but to attempt a recreation would simply be using a template for an album, and I believe that's been tried before ( re-load or just about any 2nd album from a pop act ) As far as Spam is concerned I still think it's worse having to scroll down through messages with 3 other previous messages added on. Hell just copy a line relevant to your point or just say "Billy is a dumbass because he ... " Although I did rather enjoy the Hot Asian Girls at the top oft he last Jam. Members only or free for all doesn't really matter to me as long as it's not the "members" clogging up the Jam with redundancy. Unless you count pointless meandering as Jam fodder, in which case I guess I'm guilty. Oh well enough gibberish from one who doesn't really know. Have a Day Y'all Billy

I found myself and my friend in the Milwaukee pic :) But that's only because when you're hunting for someone wearing olive green in a crowd of black shirts, it's not that difficult. Likewise with my hair, which is two different colors and was decently visible on my 25" tv.
Needless to say, I marked out like a little bitch, even though we were just kinda colored blobs.

Fully agreed! Kevin Gilbert really was something special. Of course a good question is: what would FII have sounded like, when he'd have produced it. I think that it would have been even more into the progressive rock direction also including many pop elements. BUT (before some of you start to vomit on the screen *g*)...that would have been much more tasteful and sophisticated than anything that ended up on FII. Listen to KGs music and you'll realize that hes done the most sophisticated pop/rock music on earth, not to mention his unbelievable production skills. Really, really a pity that he left us so early.

In technical terms its called "reimport", right? ;)

It doesn't have to be dark to be emotional. Jordan's music is emotioinal. It's happy.
Anyway, according to DT on the commentary, Finally Free was mainly a Jordan piece, and I find parts of that to be particularly dark and somber.

Greetings ye 'jamanoids...
Got a query for those of you who buy lots of obscure metal stuff. I'm looking for a couple of discs on CD that I already own on tape but now appear to be out of print. I've found both at Metal Mayhem ( http://www.metalmayhem.com ) but I've not dealt with these folk before. Are they a good reliable business?
Denis Gulbey from Sentinel Steel suggested them, so I'd guess they're legit, but some 'jammer recommendations would be nice too.
One other thing. They're kind of expensive ($25 for each of the discs I'm looking for) so if somebody knows a good place to find Jennifer Batten's "Above Below and Beyond" and Vinnie Moore's "Meltdown", let me know.
Semi-prog content: So far I've seen a couple people mentioning that they'll be at the Fates Warning / Savatage show on May 16th in Atlanta. Let's get a show of hands: who's gonna be there besides me?
cheers, Phil

I'd avoid MetalMayhem as much as possible. They are way overpriced, trying to cash in on people looking for OOP stuff.
Gemm.com has the Jennifer Batten disc starting at $8.82 and the Vinnie Moore starting at $6.95.
Half.com has the Vinnie Moore starting at $5.98.

I have never understood why people dismiss this album. It's different t= han the others but no more so that any of them are different from each other. I don't want t= he same disc over and over. FII is quite prog, thanks. "New Millenium", "Lines In The Sand"= , "Peruvian Skies" etc. And I fucking love "You Not Me". PERIOD! I will defend that fucker qu= icker than anyone, including the band! :) The hook is awesome. Yes, it's poprock...but I= happen to like good poprock which this DEFINITELY is.
Kevin Shirley is a top rate producer too. I keep reading posts slaggin= g this guy for having something EQ'd wrong or a highhat is too loud or some shit. Blah blah = blah! C'mon! This is a densely recorded CD and BTW, it's what the band backed. I seem to re= call them saying it was their best effort ever. Typical new album hype? And now we hear = that the CD should have been done differently. No biggie. I love all the songs that didn= 't make it. "Speak To Me" is one of the best tunes they've ever done! At least, we have it avail= able. FII is a necessary CD and a solid one. End of rant. I had to do it.

It's good to see some people leaping to the defense of this potentially=
fine CD.
I say potentially because of what FII was truly MEANt to be - based on = the FII demos that are on http://dreamtheater.mit.edu. =A0If you haven't he= ard these, you owe it to yourself to check them out. =A0I swear, Kevin Shir= ley sure knows how to run a board, but as a producer he makes some really lousy choices, and it seems as though for some reason he was TRYING to make FII weaker.
Most of the FII demos are FAR superior to their album counterparts. =A0= the only exceptions in my mind are You Not Me and Lines in the Sand; You NO= T Me is a VAST improvemnt over You OR Me (although there are still individual pieces of You Or Me that I like better). =A0Lines in the San= d is just perfect on the CD, and I believe DT's best song (I would say it's Finally Free, but it loses something when taken out of the SFaM context= ).
I love the extra lyrics in the bridge and verse of the Hollow Years dem= o. and what Shirley did to Take Away My Pain is just unforgivable. =A0Howe= ver, getting Hell's Kitchen out of the middle of Burning My Soul and making = it its own song was definitely a good idea - and it became DT's second-bes= t instrumental (after Eve).
The performances on the demos are often better as well. =A0I know Kevin=
Shirley disliked James's vibrato. =A0Stupid pop producer. =A0Just becau= se he's used to working with one kind of singer doesn't mean that's all there i= s.
I also can't believe that some of the songs cut were some of what I believe are DT strongest songs ever. =A0I would have rather heard The W= ay it Used to Be and/or Speak To Me than Just Let Me Breathe and/or Anna Lee (even though I like Anna Lee).
Until SFaM, FII was hands-down my favorite DT CD. =A0Now that SFaM is h= ere, I still don't know which I like better.
I won't rehash any Jordan/Derek arguments here - it's a banned topic, a= nd I think many people here already know how I feel about that issue.
So, FII rules, Jordan sucks, Shirley sucks worse. =A0Yup, that's it. =A0= I feel beter.
