It's kinda ironic that I of all people would start a thread about weapons :-)
In the meantime I learned (by listening to the commentary track on the DVD) that
MP had to "work with what he got", which explains some of the gaffs but still
looks lousy and cheap. I'm known to be a purist and perfectionist and therefore
believe it would have been better not to include any movie parts at all than do
some amateurish attempt at remaking "Dead again". I prefer 2 hours of Mike's
drumsolos to 2 minutes of bad acting and worse camera work.

Well, I, for one, like the film noir-ish way that the acting was done. Granted, there are some things that are off, but that doesn't make it a horrible sight to behold. Nobody is perfect, and Kasper had limited time and even more limited funds with which to record the film sequences. When you're working with a limited budget, you have to make some sacrifices, and I mean, hell, look at Star Wars. There were mistakes all over that when it first came out, but that doesn't mean it's not good.

Radiohead is great, so I disagree. I am not surprised that folks on the= list either don't "get" Radiohead or just haven't tried. "Kid A" is a great CD but a very challenging one. I can hear some of "OK Computer= " in M2 but it nothing overwhelming.

    Hi there,

just have some time left to once again post to the Ytsespam...

    >the Sand", "Trial of Tears" or "New Millennium". The only >things wrong with FII - to my mind - were Burning My Soul >(awesome for the first minute, and then they ran out of >inspiration, seems to me), You Not Me (just shit, >basically), and the fact that "Anna Lee" made the cut, >when "Speak To Me", "Raise The Knife" (incidentally, is >someone EVER going to put the lyrics to that in the DT >Songbook for those of us who don't know them?!?!) and >TWiUtB were dropped. And I'm NOT being sarcastic.

The only thing that was wrong with FII was compromises, compromises, compromises. If they didn't have had the pressure from the label (and partly themselves), and another producer who wouldn't care for commercial song structures (see rearrangement of LITS) and wouldn't bring in Desmond Child (YUCK!), the whole album would have sounded totally different.

I still think the songs from that period were absolutely great, it's just what ended up on FII at the end that, well, sucked. It was a real joy to work on the outtakes for the 1999 Xmas CD, even in this rough demo stage those songs were just great.

(BTW, you call yourself a DT fan and don't have this CD? If you had, and would look into the booklet, there are the lyrics to all songs, including Raise The Knife. Transcribing all this stuff drove us mad, believe me ;-))

If Kevin Gilbert, who accidentally killed himself in 96, just days after he agreed to produce the DT album, would come back to life for just an hour, I guess I would spend this hour just slapping him on the head all the time, just for being so stupid. This guy was one of the most talented musicians, producers, songwriters (you name it) of his generation, and one could only imagine what he would have done for the FII material if he would have had a chance.

(If you never heard of him, just go to kevingilbert.com and listen. If there ever was something like progressive pop, he made it. His two solo albums (Thud from 1995, best singer/songwriter stuff I ever heard and the concept album The Shaming Of The True, finished and released after his death) are just excellent.)

    (stepping down from soapbox)

(and now for something completely different)

    >AS for the stuff about Pantera, I think TGSTK is their >worst album ever (although I never had enough courage >to listen to REinventing the steel) - except for their

Give it a try, it's much better than Trendkill.

    >makes you ask yourself if you're already awake or if >you're still in this bloody nightmare where you french >kiss a french politician...) ... and believe it or not

I wonder what Sigmund Freud would have had to say about stuff like that...

    >And as for DT, i'd REALLY like another awake... just >think "Space-Dye vest" is the best DT-song ever. >Although it's more Kev's effort than DT's ;-).

I guess it's that dark mood and atmosphere that's still missing from DT nowadays and that makes people listen to I&W for the gazillionth time. I wonder if it's lost with the departure of Kevin or if they can bring it back someday? (Guys, are you listening? ;-))

BTW, I think you are all wimps.

DT are at their very best when they are really heavy. I guess I would have never given them a chance if WDADU wouldn't have started with this shredding riff from AFIL. ;-) Seriously, if I'd make a mix tape, it would be filled with the heavy and progressive shit like 6:00, New Millennium, Metropolis, or Beyond This Life. Which, BTW, is maybe the best track on SFAM. I just love this heavy-as-shit riff, the hysterical solos and the whole song structure. There you are.

Oh, BTW, regarding the 2000 Xmas CD, please be patient, they are on the way to the US and will be shipped to you all ASAP. After all those delays you can wait a few more FUCKING DAYS, RIGHT?

Just received my copy of the PAL version from Bensons... No sign of any synch probs at all. I've watched the thing inside out! I have but two words to use with which to describe what I feel about this dvd...

    ~*spoiler... get ready for it*~

    HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!

~ahem... excuse my French but I think I've shot my bolt at least a dozen times so far!! *L*

This has far exceeded any expectations that I had. Musically the guys are ALL ON!! This is a much tighter band than we saw on 5YIAL. Jordan fits DT 10 times better than Derek, and I liked Derek's style. But Jordan blows Derek right out of the water live. He sounds much more at home playing the earlier stuff than Derek ever did.

James has really impressed me also. His stage prescence and live vocal ability seems to be really kicking arse! The backup vocals from JP and MP also have vastly improved IMO.

All in all I can't fault this dvd at all. I've watched it back to front twice so far. Love it!

    -Paul.

It's good to see some people leaping to the defense of this potentially fine CD.

I say potentially because of what FII was truly MEANt to be - based on the FII demos that are on http://dreamtheater.mit.edu. If you haven't heard these, you owe it to yourself to check them out. I swear, Kevin Shirley sure knows how to run a board, but as a producer he makes some really lousy choices, and it seems as though for some reason he was TRYING to make FII weaker.

Most of the FII demos are FAR superior to their album counterparts. the only exceptions in my mind are You Not Me and Lines in the Sand; You NOT Me is a VAST improvemnt over You OR Me (although there are still individual pieces of You Or Me that I like better). Lines in the Sand is just perfect on the CD, and I believe DT's best song (I would say it's Finally Free, but it loses something when taken out of the SFaM context).

I love the extra lyrics in the bridge and verse of the Hollow Years demo. and what Shirley did to Take Away My Pain is just unforgivable. However, getting Hell's Kitchen out of the middle of Burning My Soul and making it its own song was definitely a good idea - and it became DT's second-best instrumental (after Eve).

The performances on the demos are often better as well. I know Kevin Shirley disliked James's vibrato. Stupid pop producer. Just because he's used to working with one kind of singer doesn't mean that's all there is.

I also can't believe that some of the songs cut were some of what I believe are DT strongest songs ever. I would have rather heard The Way it Used to Be and/or Speak To Me than Just Let Me Breathe and/or Anna Lee (even though I like Anna Lee).

Until SFaM, FII was hands-down my favorite DT CD. Now that SFaM is here, I still don't know which I like better.

I won't rehash any Jordan/Derek arguments here - it's a banned topic, and I think many people here already know how I feel about that issue.

So, FII rules, Jordan sucks, Shirley sucks worse. Yup, that's it. I feel beter.

Why not watch the rest of it? If they have any DT reference at all, I'd keep going to see what they have to say.....like that show "Freaks and Geeks" that was on NBC for one season, the first time I came across it, one of the characters was drumming along (badly) to Rush's The Spirit of Radio....I watched that sho until it went off the air, and still catch the reruns on cable sometimes

for what it's worth, Roswell is supposed to be "Good TV". Naturally, critical acclaim and Dream Theater sightings (about as rare as alien sightings on TV) mean that that show will probably be cancelled after just the one season.

Roswell is a wonderful show. And not only has it already survived for two full seasons, I believe it's scheduled to be continued for another. Don't quote me on that, but I think I'm right.

It really is a good show, even though it is about high school kids. This is obviously an odd premise, considering it involves aliens, but it deals with important subjects, such as loyalty, friendship, performance under pressure, and in last week's episode they were dealing with the death of one of the main characters (I was absolutely shocked that he died, too, he was my favorite of them all); in addition, it looks like he may have even committed suicide. So don't think that just because it's on the WB it's crap.

There's a difference between inspiration and influence. I wonder if those albums inspire DT to write/record, or if those are styles they have in mind for what they're doing. I know when I hear good music, I'm inspired to play or write, but it may not necessarily be in that style.

Okay, I had to come out of lurkdom again temporarily to say we saw "Scenes from NY" last night and WOW! I loved the extra video footage, the acting out of some parts on stage, and the extra singers - it was just so *full*. (My one complaint, though, is that the hypnotist did not have the appropriate soothing voice, IMO.)

I also thought it was very cool to see that one of the fans interviewed for the documentary was a woman.

We had a small get together in honor of this major event. <g> We invited a friend of ours (he's into prog-like stuff and Keith's working on making a DT fan of him), his spouse (she's not into prog, but she was a good sport to come), and our friend brought a friend of his who already is a DT fan.

So has anyone been able to spot themselves in the tour photos? <g> Keith thinks he may have, but I say we need to watch on a bigger TV to know for sure. ;)
