Thanks for all the comments on the Blind Guardian album. I thinks it's a
pretty much
unanimous decision.
>[The Silmarillion] Which is not only the most difficult book I've ever
read, but is also the
>greatest book ever written.
Yeah, you're not kidding about difficult. Oy, I thought there were a lot
of names in LoTR. :-)
I'm at the beginning of chapter 11 - Of the Sun and Moon and Hiding of
the Valinor. I think I'm
gonna have to go back and re-read everything, because I can't remember
any of it.
>Tolkien is to literature what Dream Theater is to music
Interesting analogy. Hadn't thought of it that way, but I wholeheartedly
agree. Beautiful, well-crafted
and at times extremely complicated - to the point of turning off people
who don't care for that sort of
thing. But it's their loss. :-)
Anybody been following the development of the movie? Looks like it should
be good. I hope it's not
some computer-generated cheez-fest, but I don't think it will be. I've
read some interviews given, and a
lot of the people working on the project seem to have a genuine love for
the books and the world Tolkien
created. I'd be interested in seeing how they try to convey some of the
more emotional aspects of the book,
such as the torment wrought by the Ring on its bearer, and my favorite
part, Aragorn's death. Or, more
specifically, the description of Arwen after Aragorn dies. I'm not a very
emotional guy (I got only minor shivers
when Theresa started singing on the dvd), but this part had me balling my
eyes out. Good stuff. :-)
-Dan.

Sounds to me like these people have made up they're mind and just can't be
objective about it, no matter what form of DT you present to them. Maybe
what they mean by "it all sounds exactly the same" is on more of a general
level i.e., nasty guitar rythm, lots of melodic drumming and double
kick-drum work, ripping guitar solos, etc. Another way to look at it is,
instrumentals with some theme parts and other parts which showcase each
instrument. Let's just say that people on this list would not agree with
them. I know a great bass player who is a professional musician and he never
liked DT or similar bands that showcase virtuoso performances. It's a
sickness ;)

some indie shite, the other is one of the most talented drummers (in any

Any DC area jamers out there going to see G3 at the Warner Theater on July
17?
If so, does anyone know what's up with tickets? I've been waiting for them
to go on sale since the date was announced over two weeks ago!

Yeah, I'm waiting not-so-patiently for tickets to go on sale as well. This

getting a ticket. Grrr.

thought, but no can do.
As far as I know, tickets are not yet available. We'll see.

I don't believe that you want this to be a flame war, so I'm not going to
take offense at your parting shot.
> You've gotta be kidding... the new Megadeth album is great... a

This album is by NO MEANS heavier than anything pre-Youthanesia. It's
over-produced, and the sound is compressed beyond comprehension. After
listening 3 times and reading all of the lyrics, I simply don't know how to
debate the idea of this being mature writing, or lyrical poetry. From the
standpoint of a musician, however, this is some incredibly simplistic, and
ininspired writing.
None of these riffs is a keeper. There is not ONE Holy Wars, not ONE
Peace Sells, not ONE In My Darkest Hour. It sounds like they were writing
with the idea of "this will sound cool with a crowd cheering in between
these beats" or something like that.
> I wish people would stop hanging shit by always making
> comparisons and dissecting every musical note and actually
> LISTEN for a change.
It is not possible to listen without making comparisons. You do it yourself
in this very post. It is not possible to develop a taste for a new piece of
music, without comparing it to something, if only itself. And musicians
learn by dissecting music. That's perhaps the most important habit of an
aspiring musician... critical listening.
> and my fav is "1000 times goodbye"
This settles it right there. You are looking for Megadeth 2K... this new
Megadeth that writes hard rock, primarily. There's nothing wrong with that.
But I was looking for what I was told was "a return to Peace Sells and Rust
In Piece" in terms of heaviness. This album is no different than the last
3. Any of these songs could seamlessly fit with those other albums... it's
not a band that I like or respect. I do, however respect your right to a
differing opinion, and your right to like this album. It's written to be
catchy. It's just not written to be heavy or thrashy, or original. That's
my complaint... too many lies and excuses on the part of the band, and too
many followers among the fans.
> Do yourself a favour, and give it a listen to decide yourself,
> and don't listen to some unqualified rants.
I'm pretty sure my comments are just as qualified as yours, if not more so.
Megadeth fans that were looking for this "back to the Rust In Piece sound"
are not fans of songs with samples of relationship breakups. This album was
written for a 14 year old crowd... not people who have been fans of the band
for 14 years. I agree, though... listen for yourself, make up your own
mind. Just don't actually PAY for this abomination to do so. (is Madsman
actually recommending NAPSTER???)

Uhh Dave said that it was a tributeto AM I EVIL, not a rip off. If you
notice its the same exact riff and everything, one can sing Am I evil
without missing a beat or a word. Its cool how he can re write over a
song. Kinda like what weird al does, but this is serious.
I love the new album. Maybe Al's solo's do sound a little like marty's
cause dave write's em. Duh.
I love the album. Elements from all the older cd's are there, with the
melody that dave's developed over the past 2 albums. great metal. And if
the tour they are talking about happnes for the US, this is gonna kill
everything. Iced Earth and Megadeth on 1 nite.
