Pardon this being a little late, but this thought just crossed my
    mind...

    ]From: Kurt M Hampton <kurt.hampton@juno.com>
    > I love the new album. Maybe Al's solo's do sound
    > a little like marty's cause dave write's em. Duh.

Let us, for a moment, (because I won't stand by this for more than a
moment) ASSUME that you are correct, and Dave writes everything that
Megadeth puts out, like he's the Heavy Metal Steve Morse. If that's the
case, then why is everyone so quick to blame Marty Friedman for Megadeth
turning soft and more commercial? That's a little bit of a leap ain't it?
Note, that I am not passing judgement on this incarnation of $Megadeth$. I
don't appreciate it at all, but I don't need people getting on my case about
it. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make money, IMO. I just dislike
it when you have to actually compromise to do so.

Now, this moment having expired, let us eliminate a misconception on
your part, and likely that of many other Megadeth fans. Dave Mustaine
writes almost all of the riffs, and has the final say, period. He makes
suggestions on what styles to play, and has a Mike Varney-like final say on
    what stays and what goes.
He does NOT, however, possess the capability to compose solos like Jeff
Young, Chris Poland, or Marty Friedman. He may well be nuts, but he isn't
multiple personality. All of the Megadeth guys were allowed to play their
own solos. Mustaine can't even tie his shoes like Friedman.
Friedman wrote all of his own solos on RIP and Countdown (I can not
speak for the subsequent albums... they simply weren't memorable). I say
this as someone who has played for well over a decade, primarily because of
Jason Becker and Marty Friedman. Call me an egomaniac, but yes, I am a
    fuckin' authority in this matter.
Pitrelli IS capable of picking up on Friedman style cues. He's a great
and talented player. It doesn't change the fact that he is playing like
Friedman, whether Mustaine asked him to (because he certainly didn't notate
the solos and tell Pitrelli to play them) or whether it was his own choice.
    "Duh." :)
It's funny that a band that got so dark on Marty, and a dissatisfied
fanbase who wants someone to blame, is now listening to someone who is
trying to SOUND like Marty. Hell, I guess there's nothing fundamentally
wrong with trying to sound like one of the best guitarists ever born... :)
Let's just keep the stories straight though. Remember how to spell
    Mu$taine. :)

no way...... i was at that show. it was fantastic. the first U.S. show
of the 2nd leg of the tour. no one knew a damn thing about the setlist,
and if my memory serves me, they played a whole lot of old, heavy stuff.
    i WILL be getting this.
just as a side note, i'm sure many other jammers were at that show too.
if so, drop a post and tell what you thought of the show. i was also
supposed to meet up with a jammer at the show, but i never did. is brian
larkin still on this list? sorry i missed ya' man. anyhow, those of you
that were there, what did you think of the show?

Yeah I know he wrote the ones on Youthanasia as well because on the Evolver
video they show him in the studio improvising solos for a few tracks from
    the album. moo.

    Yo zemljak!

I, like most people that work with puters, get to slack my ass off every
now and then....make that all the time :)

Miladojka Youneed kicks royal ass, great bass player, great drummer,
what else does a band need? :)

Disciplin A Kitschme? Never heard, will look into it. I still haven't
checked the Lolita CD... I always forget... goddamnit...

And don't you mess with slovenian hockey, it's national sport #1
now, and we all feel very strongly about it. Last year it was soccer
and a year before it was handball. I'm a fat guy who considers
walking labour fit for a horse, but when your national team scores
big time, you just gotta love it :)

    Best,

Hey zemljak, Miladojka Youneed is playing here in few days along with
few others - Disciplin A Kitschme (YIHAAAAWWW)

BTW, I just heard of this Slovenian band but dunno what they play.

Anyone British jammer here? Ever heard of Disciplin A Kitschme? :)
    Kicking ass band.

Posted over on the Symphony X list by Guillaume Labrecque:

    Hello,

As I expected when I noticed that there have been close to no advertising
for this show, a small crowd of 90-100
    peoples only showed.

SILENT EXILE were the first band on the band on the bill and once again,
    they delivered. Another great performance
for the guys, who had only about 5 minutes for a soundcheck (thanks to
Planet X...). But the sound was very good
anyway, all instruments were fully audible. They played most (if not all)
songs of the Dancing with Death album.
Nowadays, I'm listening to much more heavy/power metal than prog, but
when I want to get my prog metal fix, Silent
Exile are the perfect solution. Congrats guys. I'm still really looking
forward to hearing your new songs.

Then, it was EVENT. I won't say much about them, except that they were
not my thing. The musicians are all
excellent, there were some good riffs, but this band has a really strange
style, too much for me, it's really lacking some
melodies I could relate to. I did hear some King's X influences (especially
for the vocals), but it's way proggier than
    anything King's X ever played.

PLANET X closed the night. Again, it was way too proggy for me (but I
enjoyed them a bit more than Event),
especially since it's all instrumental, but these musicians are really
impressive to see and hear. Sherinian on keys,
Donati on drums, Macalpine on guitars and Larue(?) on bass are very
skilled musicians, masters of their instruments.
The problems is that it sounds to me like a music clinic for musicians. I
think that musicians can appreciate this highly
technical music, but it's very hard for the average listener like me.

Anyway, it was a cool show. The Silent Exile guys were very nice to hang
    out with (as usual).
Looks like the Planet X guys (Donati and Sherinian mostly)treated Silent
Exile and Event as shit. It's a real shame... Too bad these great
musicians have that much of an ego. Losers....

    Guillaume

NP:LIONS SHARE-entrance(this is really good. Sure the new singer is no
Engberg, but he does a really good job. Not much proginess left, but an
    excellent melodic heavy metal album)
