    Hey all-

seeing as a question had arisen on a couple of the message boards (and
perhaps here too), I decided to ask MP abooot the nature of JM's 8 string
bass. Here's what he had to say:

    >>Quick question for ya - with regards to the comment abooot Johnny M using an
    >>8-string bass, will this be a double-strung bass (kinda like a 12-string
    >>guitar) or is it like his 6 string with 2 additional (higher and/or lower?)
    >>strings. Inquiring minds would like to know.
    >
    >
    >It is the former...(there is no such thing as the latter)....
    >It really is not as big of a deal as everybody might be making it out to be!
    >He only used it on half a song (on my urging so, no less) and 8 string basses
    >are not that uncommon....Doug Pinnick (King's X), Monty Colvin (Galactic
    >Cowboys) and the bass player from Cheap Trick are a few bass players who
    >immediately come to mind who regularly used 8 (or even 12) string basses..
    >MP
    >
    >Feel free to take this response if the question keeps reappearing!

Well, think about it. They probably barely even break even for doing the tour, and that's using rented gear. Can you IMAGINE how much it would cost to ship around JP's Rack(s)?! The Purple Monster?! For that matter...Would it even FIT into a pub?!?

Besides, I somehow can't see MP agreeing to do a pub gig.

Yeah, well they played the Palace which isnt exactly a shitty club. I think
    Cradle of Filth
has a pretty big following, as does extreme metal in general down here.
BTW. saw Eric Johnson and the Hellecasters dudes on Wednesday. Great great
    stuff.
Actually I preffered the Hellecaster's to Eric a bit, hadn't seen them play
    before but they
    were really good.
Also saw the John Butler Trio on Sunday. If you have the opportunity to see
    this guy- see him!
It was one of the best concerts Ive been to. He is an amazing guitarist.
    Imagine all the
talent of the Doors/Pearl Jam condensed into one man. Long, intricate songs
    and
    this huge incredible sound.

    > And I would certainly hazzard a guess that sales wise, Cradle Of Filth and
    Nevermore

Yeah, I knew Conklin did an 8-Stringer, and I think a couple of other
companies do so also. I think Bill "Buddha" Dickens even used a 9-String
bass on tour with Bobby Rock. But 8(or more)-String basses that are not
    doubled up do exist.

If anybody wants to hear music on the net tonight, starting at 10:00
eastern time tonight, (Satureday), I am going to play some stuff off my
nhbradio stream. Ranging from prog rock to metal to classic and hard rock
and 80s stuff, all of my 2gb of napster files and 400 plus CDs are at my
disposal and I am bored, so what the hell. To listen, either go to
http://www.nhbradio.com and click the listen link or point winamp or real
    player 8 to 64.152.82.190:21944.

When I use the term "pub" I'm talking about moderately large venues. Never underestimate Melbourne pubs! Hehehe... The Melbourne pub/club scene is the music capital of Australia and alot of the pubs here are quite large! In particular I'm thinking of the Palace venue here in Melbourne which looks similar to the venues that DT play judging by the tour pics on the dvd. That is a 1500 - 2000 people venue from what I can tell. I've seen bands there including Fear Factory, Kreator, Cradle Of Filth, Anthrax, Skid Row, Malmsteen, Soulfly, A Perfect Circle and heaps of others including Mike Portnoy when he did his drum clinic in '94 I think it was. It would by no means be any smaller than the venues that they normally play.
