In the last digest (5861) Charles Farell asked a question about DT fans
playing DT stuff. I know quite some guitarists in my neighbourhood who try
to play Dream Theater, because practicing their songs, can simply make you
a good guitarist. I started out playing the guitar 11 years ago, and played
a lot of Metallica and Megadeth. After a few years of playing I discovered
DT and ever since I've been practicing on a lot of their songs. The songs
on IAW are great for the intermediate guitarist. I started with TTT and
Metropolis, and it really helped me develop my skills and I must say I
still learn new stuff from Mr. Petrucci. The only thing that really bugs me
at the moment, is the fact that on Awake and LTE, a lot of 7-string guitars
were used. And I don't have one! (Maybe I should buy the new signature
    model? :) )

I have a question: I got this mpg video from the net with Petrucci playing
a song, which I can't really place. It sounds very familiar but I can't
find it on any of the records. I think it might be on LTE II? It sounds a
lot like Biaxident. Can anyone help me out? In the end he says: "Something
    like that, so....."
He still plays on his Ibanez so I think the movie is at least older than 2
years. The movie is about 5 megs and it is about 3 minutes long.
I really need to know the riffs in this song, because it sounds very cool
to play. It's probably just me, because I had this before with another
song. It took me a full day of listening to DT to find out which song it
was. Because many riffs sound alike.

    Thankz,

    Raffel

Check out John Paul Jones' album "Zooma" if you want to know what these things sound like. JPJ plays 8-, 10- and 12-string basses throughout, and let me be the first to say:

    Oh.

    My.

    God.

Seriously, until you've heard it, you can't even BEGIN to imagine what these things sound like in the hands of players like JPJ or JM. Heavy duty. I have a Digitech pitch shifter in my rig to approximate the sound, because it adds so much clarity to the bottom end.

Thankyou for you attention in this plug for John Paul Jones (www.johnpauljones.com)!

Actually, DT toured with Galactic Cowboys (I think
Monty played one as someone already mentioned), but
they also toured with Big Wreck (crappy reception from
DT fans, KICK ASS band if you've ever seen them on
their own), and their bass player really kicked it out
on an 8-string as well. Very underrated player and
criminally buried in the mix on their album.

Anyway, it just seems the 8-strings provides a much
fatter sound, leaving me to wonder why they're not
    used more than they are.

    Mike

    >< Well, think about it. They probably barely even break even for doing the
tour, and that's using rented gear. Can you IMAGINE how much it would cost to
ship around JP's Rack(s)?! The Purple Monster?! For that matter...Would it
even FIT into a pub?!? Besides, I somehow can't see MP agreeing to do a pub
    gig. ><

Well they did make a guest appearance playing on stage at a small pub in
Holland with Nick and Neal of Spock's Beard.

    Hi all:

Time for my daily handful of change:=) The first three songs that I
seriously _tried_ to learn were "Peruvian Skies," "Voices," and "Home." I
think. It's been a long time since I started trying to learn DT stuff, but
I know I just learned the first half of "Home" this week. Of course, I
tried to learn ACOS once (thanks to Chris Ptacek and all at
    http://www.dsrmusic.com/metaltab/catacombs.htm), but I'm not coordinated
enough to do the fast runs in the middle (or in "Scarred," for that
matter...). Being a lowly more-or-less-self-taught guitarist of two years
sucks when you're trying to learn how to play technically precise stuff.
Anyway, I didn't try to learn TSM or Metropolis right off, and only briefly
looked at the music for those two when I needed something to play for a few
minutes. Anyone have any good tips for improving my chops or learning to
play songs without buying tablature books? I know, I know, I suck, but I
    guess that's life.

    Later,
