The very best are made in Japan like Mitsui or Taiyo-Yuden except Kodak,
which are made in US or Mexico.
Avoid anything made in Taiwan or India or anything 100 for $5. You get what
you pay for.

I use Verbatim CD-Rs. I've had problems with Memorex CD-Rs in various CD
players. some of them just don't play the CDs. The Verbatim (which I've
never heard of before) have played in all and sound great as well, clean burn
no blips.
Prog Power. I went mainly to see Evergrey but left wanting to buy a Kamelot
shirt more. I'm just awe inspired by Khan and his singing.
also, did anyone recognize Randy Coven? I'm a bass player and years ago I
had all his CDs on the old Guitar Recordings. I was like, "is that Randy
Coven...and why the hell is he with ARK?"

(he has more but i'm not familiar with them) Funk Me Tender and Sammy Says

A lot of those cheapies are silver on top. Try to avoid those, as they're
a lot more likely to get scratched: CDs are read by bouncing a laser off
the top surface of a CD through the bottom, so if the top surface is
deteriorated, more likely in the case of CD-Rs without surface protection,
the light goes right on through. So I've been told anyhow.
Have any of you run into audio CDs that have copy protection on them
lately? I've encountered a few European companies, Osmose most notably,
that have been using a new copy protection scheme in the past few months
which doesn't allow for discs to be read in CD-ROM drives. (I don't have a
DVD-ROM, yet I doubt it'd work in one of them either.) They play fine in
conventional CD and DVD players. It's kind of a pain in the ass for
someone like myself who typically listens to CDs through his computer, but
I think it is a great idea overall for the smaller-time artists...although
it probably won't be long until somebody figures a way around it (if it
hasn't been done already). I wonder why more of the media giants of the
USA haven't hopped on the copy protection bandwagon. You'd think, with the
industry publicly expressing their worry about MP3 proliferation, this sort
of thing would be ideal, at least as a temporary measure. Maybe there's
some fatal flaw I don't know about...or perhaps they are worried about the
few pennies more per disc it might cost to institute...
Incidentally, the above paragraph is not meant to stir up round
seven-trillion of the MP3 ethics battle. Anyone who wants to complain
about how expensive music is or to advocate the positive aspects of
electronic music trading (and they certainly exist), believe me, we've
heard it before.

I've used Verbatim, TDK, Mitsui, Sony, Pyrod and Kodak cdr's. I've not
experienced a great deal of difference between cdr brands however I have
noticed the occasional problem with software and/or source discs. A copied
cdr is only as good as the source disc allows it to be. If you have a dusty
or marked cd that you are trying to copy, your burner will most likely have
trouble transferring the data and as a result you may experience buffer
underrun, which will create you a lovely shiny drink coaster, or at best you
will have "blips" in your copied disc.

I have been researching these for a while, there are several people who
memorex is crap, I dont think so, but people SWEAR by TDK Certified plus,
which is what I burn with. 7 bucks for 10 of em in slim cases at walmart,
not too bad.
Something intresting, I recently just got a DT bootleg with Ray Alder
singing with james on PMU. Pretty cool.

And, of course, there's the option of buying the original...
Even though I do make my own CD-Rs myself from time to time, but this is more
of a precaution. You don't want your brand new LSfNY to be broken by some
drunk idiot whose conception of what is good/bad music has no relation to the
real world whatsoever (hint: Backstreet "yack" Boys...)
